For seven years, Antiseptic Fashion has been pioneering leather design with corsets and accessories sometimes reminiscent of medieval armor, others – of alien carapaces. Owner Billy Vahan began his career as a punk kid in Montana, using traditional leather working methods to make knife sheaths and bondage belts – he’s come a long way. Since launching Antiseptic in San Francisco and teaming up with designer Melisande Innes-Brown, his work has been featured internationally in print and television. The brand’s cutting-edge posture collars, feather-embellished shoulder plates, buckled harnesses and laced waist cinches have been gaining popularity with high-profile clients like Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, and more. In recent years, Innes-Brown moved on to other projects and Billy moved Antiseptic Fashion to Los Angeles, revamping the label and putting on art events with his partner, Marlo Marquise. Last week, we browsed his decked-out downtown studio and talked about the transition and the future.

Gallery Urban Exploration You Are My Pork Chop… Villainy General Store
With a name like “Villainy General Store,” the new Echo Park boutique conjures images of a one-stop-shop for all your criminal needs, complete with cane-swords and whooshing capes. Seekers of dynamite and smoke bombs take heed because the most villainous items you’ll find here are hilariously scathing break-up cards.
Fashion Shop Talk: Blacklickorish Latex
Latex fashion has been around for decades, but didn’t gain wide-spread public attention until the 2000s. Previously confined to fetish magazines, goth clubs and pin-up websites, it’s now all over MTV on the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, in addition to making occasional appearances on couture runways [see Balenciaga's Fall 2008 collection, for instance]. No longer perceived as just the stuff of BDSM hoods and catsuits, this stretchy, sleek, thin wearable rubber is being draped, printed on and molded to create a plethora of fresh, exciting garments. One of the artisans at the forefront of this sexy, shiny movement is Alyssa Norman of Blacklickorish latex. Relatively new on the scene, [Alyssa got her start just five short years ago] she’s blazing trails with complex patterns and signature detailing, bringing a distinct flare to the latex trend. We visited Alyssa in her studio to talk fashion, fetish and the future.

Art Strange Creatures Reign at Chet Zar’s Conjoined 2
On Saturday, the Bergamot Station Arts Complex flooded with heavy foot traffic headed straight for Copro Nason Gallery, where strange sea creatures, aliens, robots and mutants anxiously waited on the walls and floor displays. It was opening night for the second installment of Chet Zar’s Conjoined, The Sequel – In 3D exhibit, and the art-hungry masses were fired up.

Fashion Gallery Say Hello to Mister Bear: Mishka NYC’s Street Empire
Mishka is a diminutive of “Mikhail”, can be translated to “Little Bear” in Russian and happens to be the name of a streetwear company you should know about, especially if you like graphic art and cartoon eyeballs. Launched in 2003 by Ukranian expat Mikhail Bortnik and self-proclaimed toy nerd Greg Rivera, what began as a T-shirt line has grown into a lifestyle brand with shops in NYC, Tokyo and now in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood.
Fashion Shop Talk: Miyu Decay
Miyu Decay purveys accessories for the dramatically-inclined romantic. Billowing feathers, gathered lace and vintage silk contrast with silver animal skulls, tribal coins, buttons and heavy pendants. Cascading necklaces, towering headdresses, sparkling bracelets and more are hand-crafted by Stephanie Inagaki, the artist behind Miyu Decay, who launched the brand two years ago. I sat down with Inagaki in her Los Angeles studio to talk about the past, the future, and the art of dark bling.
Fashion Featured Shop Talk: Bubbles & Frown
Since waking from a fateful dream in 2008, miss Slinky Orangina Montgomery Vaughn-Phuckake has been constructing fantasy hats, fascinators and headdresses. Bright, sparkly and whimsical, these unique adornments gained instant momentum – that’s how Bubbles and Frown Haberdashery Shoppe was born. Slinky Orangina has created a breathtaking body of work, decorating the heads of models, performers, fashionistas and celebrities worldwide. I visited the citrus-tressed designer in her downtown LA showroom to chat about hats and snap some photos of her latest creations.
