Fashion Gallery Window Shopping on Melrose

February 17, 2010 - 11:08 am

This year, I’ve sworn off shopping for 365 days in favor of order, frugality, and a massive closet-life-purge. What’s a shopaholic to do in time of such dire need? One word, friends: window shopping. Any other year I would have said that I don’t “do” window shopping, that it’s a frivolous waste of precious time and there are far better things to do, such as shampooing one’s dog or sorting through receipts, for instance, but is no regular year so I decided to give it a go. I had to be careful to find the proper arena for this feat – something with just enough eye candy to stimulate, but nothing that would tug at my pursestrings too much. Melrose Avenue, or rather its most lively stretch between La Brea and Fairfax, seemed the logical answer – fun, familiar, but safely too colorful and hipster-friendly for my personal preference.

Fashion Featured Gallery Hotties Throughout History: 30 Years of Pin-Up Fashion Show

February 5, 2010 - 1:57 pm

Last week, the folks at The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and Grand Vision Foundation combined their powers to create a unique fashion show at the opulent Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro. Hosted by Annamarie Von Firley, 30 Years of Pinup showcased eighty outfits paying tribute to the glamorous years. It was a beautiful presentation that felt just a little bit like time travel, but I was curious about how it all comes together. Before the show began, I spent a few hours wandering, mesmerized, around the gorgeous empty theater, chatting with hair and make-up artists, learning more about pin curls than I ever dreamed and finding out about San Pedro’s bustling cultural revival.

Event Gallery Mr. Black Goes to Bardot

February 1, 2010 - 1:29 pm

A few days ago, I dowsed myself in glitter and headed to Bardot, to scope out the Los Angeles incarnation of NYC’s infamous Mr. Black. Known for its bottomless waiters and outrageous theme nights, Mr. Black LA has been going strong ever since Luke Nero teamed up with glamorous producer Lenora Claire. Together with Gregory Alexander and Mr. Rusty Updegraff, they’ve been hosting what’s become one of LA’s hottest gay club nights since September. This week’s theme was dedicated to Tom of Finland – one of the most influential homoerotic and fetish artists of the twentieth century. His depictions of musclebound cops, sailors and leather daddies are iconic in and outside of the gay community. One of my beloved designers, Vivienne Westwood, even featured his art on some of her T-shirts, modeled by Sid Vicious, back in the SEX store days.

Event Gallery Santa Con 09

December 16, 2009 - 12:13 pm

Deck the streets with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll LA and scream out carols.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hit the booze and join the masses.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

On Saturday, these words rang more true than ever, when hundreds of crimson-clad Angel City residents marched the streets of Downtown, joined by one common goal – maximum merriment.
