Music ChinaShop Presents ROCK: The Lonely Drunks Club Band
According to Zak St. John, of The Lonely Drunks Club Band, putting together the lineup for each of his band’s shows is a very scientific process. “It’s kind of like a math problem each week. We have a spreadsheet I created called “The Grid. This grid has all of our songs listed on it that correlates with each instrument and who is singing. I then email and call everybody and see who is available for each week and fill in the blanks.”
Composed of some of the best musicians from the local LA scene, The Lonely Drunks Club Band is known for bestowing their rowdy rock cover songs upon The Sunset Strip. The band stands to prove that when you fill a stage with top-notch players, the evening is far from dull. Past Lonely Drunks Club shows have included guest appearances from A-list musicians including members of Alice and Chains and Alice Cooper’s band.
If you haven’t had a chance to see these guys in action, make sure to check them out at Friday’s ChinaShop Presents: Rock at the Viper Room.

Music ChinaShop Presents ROCK: I Will Never Be The Same
Josh Atchley is the singer, writer, and producer of I Will Never Be The Same, a Los Angeles-based electronic rock project known for pairing hard-edged melodic rock with pulsing ambient and industrial chords. The band has been gaining attention lately due to their packed Viper Room shows, opening slots for Camp Freddy, and for being featured on Dave Navarro’s weekly webcast, Dark Matter.
In an interview with ChinaShop, Atchley talks about I Will Never Be The Same’s forthcoming album and explains that he’ll be testing new material at the upcoming ChinaShop Presents: Rock on 11/18 at the Viper Room show. Atchley also discusses writing a song about a terrifying nightmare and credits Dave Navarro as being responsible for the band’s porn star fanbase.
Music ChinaShop Presents Rock 11/18 Preview: Former Future
When Former Future takes the stage, they don’t waste any time. “If we get a 45 minute set, there will be about 43 minutes of music,” explains bass player Brian Maillard, aka “Duck.” The indie rock foursome, who has been compared to the likes of Maroon 5, Keane, Coldplay, and Keane, is gearing up to take the stage at ChinaShop Presents: Rock on 11/18 at the Viper Room.
Check out our recent Q&A with the guys as they discuss naming their band after “a previous version of the ideal future,” fainting audience members, and their unique sound that is “all over the map.”

Featured Gallery Music Face To Face With Dead Sara
Real rock ‘n’ roll is visceral. It can grab you by the throat or it can grab you by the balls. If you’re lucky, it’ll do both at the same time. It’s emotional, accessible and honest, and like Danny and the Juniors professed way back in 1958, rock ‘n’ roll is here to stay, especially if Dead Sara have anything to say about it.
Following in the great tradition of LA rock juggernauts, this four-piece is fronted by 25-year-old Emily Armstrong (singer, sometimes guitarist) and 23-year-old Siouxsie Medley (guitarist, sometimes singer), both of whom have the power to levy crushing cranial blows with their respective instruments. Their self-titled debut is full of massive numbers like “Weatherman” and “Lemon Scent” (available below), but also dips into catchy pop territory with “We Are What You Say.” It’s a bold body of work, and the band is just getting warmed up.
After opening for Bush on a select group of September dates, Dead Sara came home to blow the doors off LA’s Viper Room. (You can check out our photo gallery for evidence, or if you happen to see Grace Slick around, you can ask her about it. She was there, too.) Check out our interview with Emily Armstrong after the jump.
Gallery Music of Verona’s Glitter-Grunge Future-Rock
It’s safe to say that anyone who thinks that women can’t hold their own in the rock scene has yet to see of Verona live. Fronted by the always charismatic Mandi Perkins, of Verona has been on the tip of the tongue of music industry execs ever since being featured on the MTV daily show, The Seven, and deemed “One of the Best Bands of the Year” by HITS magazine. The emerging indie rock band has been captivating audiences across America with what Perkins labels “futuristic rock;” a sound which infuses vital elements of classic rock — the soul of Stevie Nicks, psychedelic tones of Pink Floyd, and guitar-driven sounds of Led Zeppelin – with trendy electro pop.
L.A.’s famous KROQ (106.7) and Converse, recently hosted an of Verona residency at the world famous Viper Room. Four Sundays in a row, fans packed the intimate rock bar for a chance to win a pair of free sneakers and to see the band perform their hit single “Castles,” as well as the MTV-featured “Match.”
ChinaShop caught up with Perkins to discus transitioning from a solo artist to buzz worthy rock star, inspiration for her candid lyrics, and epic snowball fights at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Gallery Music Welcome to Wonderland: Gram Rabbit
If you happened to pass through West Hollywood last weekend, you most likely caught sight of swarms of jolly individuals wearing bunny ears. No, Easter didn’t come early this year and there wasn’t any sort of obscure theme party going on, these folks were just bright-eyed and bushy-tailed fans of Gram Rabbit.
Hailing from the desert of Joshua Tree, Gram Rabbit produces a sound that is distinctly their own – a style they proudly refer to as “desert rock.” The four-piece, led by Jesika von Rabbit and Todd Rutherford, cite their experiences with living away from the city lights and the magic of residing in a barren wilderness as the inspiration for their quirky tunes.
The band recently performed at the Viper Room in Los Angles, running through a set list that included “Hyena,” “Wheels in Motion,” “I Rest My Case,” “Off With Your Head,” Falling Debris,” off their latest album Miracles & Metaphors. They also revved up fans with “Waiting in the Kountry,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” and “Bloody Bunnies.” Their live rendition of “Candy Flip,” included Greta Valenti from Well Hung Heart joining Jesika on stage.
Shortly after the a crowd of bunnies took over, we chatted with Gram Rabbit’s Jesika von Rabbit who told us about everything from her habit of jumping on stage with notorious rock stars to her army of followers who refer to themselves as “The Royal Order of the Rabbits.”
Gallery Music Hope and Ruin : The Trews
Sitting down with Canada’s indie rockers, The Trews, was far from a boring experience. They had great stories – on stage pranks involving other bands placing male porn on their amps, drinking Jim Beam with Kid Rock, filming a music video in freezing temperatures without a jacket…
The band arrived in Los Angeles earlier in the day and prior to their Viper Room set, embarked on a secret mission to capture a photo next to the Hollywood sign. This resulted in a major deviation from the path and a not-so-happy police helicopter flying overhead as a signal for them to scurry on their way.
After I accidentally butchered the name of their latest album’s title track (they did admit to liking my version better), we dove into important topics such as the difference between Americans and Canadians and joked about how being called “The greatest rock band of their generation” by Performer Magazine is annoying because it “forces them to be good every night.”
Gallery Music Bettys Beware: The Veronicas Have Arrived
Australia’s favorite identical twins, The Veronicas took the stage at the Viper Room last week, looking not to identical. Lisa Origliasso rocked a slim black dress with tights and a long slick ponytail while sister Jessica wore a back revealing halter top, which appropriately accessorized her tattoos and playful blonde bob.
As the curtain lifted, the band appeared behind a cloud of smoke and a recorded introduction quoted Christian Slater and Winona Ryder from the film “Heathers,” “Are you a Heather? No I’m a Veronica.” The sold out show kicked off, Jessica and Lisa appeared and fans rushed the front of the venue, circling the tiny Viper Room stage.
