Featured Music 2011: The Year in Music

December 29, 2011 - 10:12 am

Another year, another batch of albums and singles, another 5 pounds on the old waistline. As we do every year around this time, writers like myself like to put an exclamation point on the last 365 days with painstakingly authored documents that seek to validate our roles as impartial curators of music…when in actuality we’re just amassing a list of songs that resonated with our own self-interests. (Hooray for music we like!) That being said, I’ll put the 11 selections below—and the 12 singles at the end—up against anyone else’s material. These are strong bodies of work, and even though the album as we know it is turning into a bit of a lost art form, you won’t need to cherry-pick through iTunes to get the good bits.

WARNING: There is no mention of M83, Odd Future or “Pumped Up Kicks” anywhere on this list, and there is only one item remotely resembling dubstep. If you’re not put off by this, please read on.

The phenomenon known as Facebook was created in a Harvard dorm room in 2003 by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin.  Since then, the online social networking giant has expanded to over 500 million users, and yep your mom is probably logged in now, updating her profile pic as we speak.

The Social Network is the story of how Facebook came to be.

According to the movie, it wasn’t all flowers and sugar cookies along the road to success for Facebook founders Mark and Eduardo.   The Ivy league-rs faced lawsuits, broken friendships, betrayals, and greed but hey, “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”

Music Nine Inch Nails : The Gift Project

January 7, 2010 - 10:55 am

NIN photo

When Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor revealed to the public that his highly anticipated multimedia project — a concert film version of the group’s groundbreaking, multimedia Lights In The Sky tour — had to be shelved, fans were understandably devastated when they learned the months-in-the-making compilation might never see the light of day. After nearly a year, it turns out that Mr. Reznor has re-strategized and come out with something much more ambitious (and interactive) than originally planned.
