Gallery Music Sunday Roast with Paul Oakenfold

October 20, 2010 - 11:02 am

Paul Oakenfold is considered to be one of the best DJs and remixers in the world.  He was the A&R rep who signed DJ Jazzy Jeff, the Fresh Prince, and Salt-n-Pepa.  He’s scored top box office films, toured with Madonna, and remixed early records for legends such as U2.  He’s toured all over the world and DJ’d in countless places, including the Great Wall of China.  He continues to break the boundaries of conventional dance music and is known for his individualistic style that dates back to his days spent in the Ibiza club scene.

Saturday night the Music Box was graced with the presence of Paul Oakenfold, as he brought his Facelift Tour to Los Angeles after a three year touring hiatus.   Accompanying Paul were special guests like Netherlands mixing hero Chuckie who warmed up the stage for Paul’s 2:30am to 4:00am set.  With a new studio album on the 2011 horizon, Paul treated fans to a road test of potential new material and showed off his legendary mixing skills amidst a laser light show cascading from a giant headset stage set.

Before his set, ChinaShop kicked it with Paul in his dressing room to discuss hot off the press topics such as his current obsession with the word fugly, Vegas vs. Ibiza, how to cook a proper Sunday roast, and his guilty TiVo-ing habits.

Featured Music Swedish House Mafia: Block-Shaking-Audio

Swedish House Mafia

When the winter of 2010 descends upon us, and critics & connoisseurs alike start to narrow down lists for the “Best Dance Song of the Summer,” the supreme banger “One (Your Name)” by Swedish House Mafia will indubitably be frequently mentioned. SHM is made up of a sonically advanced trio of House DJs/producers (namely Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso), and simply put, these audio merchants do not fuck around. “One” is the penultimate dance cut; play it at a dive bar, club, barbecue, lounge or rave and the results should be exactly the same – people getting crunk and going completely ape-shit over this up-tempo electro gem with synth riffs so sharp they could slice right through Buju Banton’s dreadlocks. The remix featuring Pharrell Williams makes the track even hotter, and when you throw in the rapacious official video for the song, it’s a done deal.

Miami Sasha and John Digweed – Act 2

April 21, 2009 - 9:56 pm

The Sasha and John Digweed boat party may have upheld an annual tradition but tweaked another. In the past, the party was on a Friday, the night after they played at the Mansion. This year, you had about two hours to get from the boat to the South Beach super club, and the process was jarring.

Event Sasha and John Digweed Sunset Cruise

April 13, 2009 - 3:43 pm

Writing about the Sasha and John Digweed boat party is a thankless task because the truth is no words, no pictures and no video can adequately approximate the magic of being there.

Not that the details can hurt. Imagine a yacht, the kind where polite people welcome you to the party as if they were happy to see you. Then glance around the deck and see people like Dj Dan, Hernan Cattaneo, John Graham, Nick Warren hanging out, catching up on things. Eating a prime rib dinner, making as many trips to the open bar as you wanted. Oh, and sailing across Miami with a bunch of your favorite people, who you haven’t seen since the last party, while Sasha and John play the perfect, sexy “backyard” set of the year. Throw a circle of good energy around the enterprise and it’s suddenly like maybe there really is a reason to believe in Santa Claus. Because this party, if you are lucky enough to be there, is the ultimate gift.

Even more to the point, it is probably the last of the Miami traditions left standing. The Masters at Work Party, Danny at Space, all are barely memories now. But the boat party, which began back in the days before the dot com boom had burst, is alive and well. And, for me, it’s still the real reason to make the trek to Miami.
