Mishka is a diminutive of “Mikhail”, can be translated to “Little Bear” in Russian and happens to be the name of a streetwear company you should know about, especially if you like graphic art and cartoon eyeballs. Launched in 2003 by Ukranian expat Mikhail Bortnik and self-proclaimed toy nerd Greg Rivera, what began as a T-shirt line has grown into a lifestyle brand with shops in NYC, Tokyo and now in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood.
From July 15 to the 17th, downtown LA hosted Future City – Little Tokyo Design Week; a four-day festival celebrating innovations in design and technology. With the evolution of sustainable urban development as its chief goal, this first installment of LTDW showcased container exhibits, film screenings, fashion shows, dance parties, product demos, performances, music, and awards ceremonies. And a caravan of LA’s finest food trucks, of course.
Ooooh the sun is shining, the weather is beautiful here in the NYSheezy (it’s about damn time), Friday is finally here and two of my favorites get into town from good ol’ London this weekend! All of which makes for a very excited panda. So, let’s kick off this week’s music news with a track from the immensely talented, Skream! Stream. It could be safely said there’s endless legions of bands with what one might call ‘lame’ names, or misleading monikers that seem anything but fitting when actually listening to their music. But it’s doubtful there could be a more fitting one for Hideaki Ishi, who hails from Tokyo and has lived a life that’s the stuff of a Hollywood (or Japanese Gangster!) films. A high school dropout, DJ Krush worked his way up from lower-level street gangs, only to become a full-fledged yakuza member. Based on that somewhat vague biography, one might anticipate rhythms of machine gun-fire or, at the very least, some ear-splitting drum and bass rhythms. But as things turn out, Krush is anything but aggressive. Instead, years of experience as one of Japan’s very first hip-hop DJs has led to a very ambient, laid back fusion sound, one that mixes a lot of sultry jazz with trip hop rhythms and stand-up bass, lounge music that intertwines with intricate time signatures and anarchic, across-the-board mixing of genres. Then again, he isn’t above mixing it up with heavyweights like Malik B and Black Thought. Here’s a peak at one of the genre’s innovators on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
