It’s Mad Lib Monday at ChinaShop, where they fill in the blanks and we make up the rest. Check out our exclusive portraits and listen to some brand new music.

Gallery Music Astronautalis at Metropolis (say that 5 times fast)
Andy Bothwell, known to many as the MC ‘Astronautalis’, played a whole bunch of shows during SXSW 2011, and I was lucky enough to make it to the very last one. The show was held pool side at Metropolis Apartments. If you went to school or live in Austin, you’ve no doubt visited or at least seen the tacky, brightly painted complex– lets just say it’s probably not any musicians first choice venue.
Austin TX Featured Gallery Shamrock Shades: Doing Our Bit To Keep It Green
We at ChinaShop spent the day Thursday in Austin, Texas celebrating St Patrick’s Day. What better way to share our love of the Emerald Isle than to whip out our favorite pair of shades and help with the green effort in the process.
Gallery Music Power Of The Riff Texas Takeover!
The Power of the Riff festival debuted at the Echoplex in Los Angeles last summer. It was by far the loudest day of the summer! And the most fun festival to debut in Echo Park in years.
Today, The Power Of The Riff descends upon Austin, Texas with a FREE all ages day party at ND at 501 Studios with Trash Talk, The Secret, The Funeral Pyre, All Pigs Must Die, Trap Them, Masakari, and The Country Bucks.
I had the pleasure of speaking to festival co-founder Sam Velde about Power Of The Riff and the following is what he had to say…
Event How To Survive in Austin, ChinaShop Style
Here in Austin, there’s just as much good stuff happening on the street corners and outside of venues as there is on the inside. From dawn to dusk and beyond, it’s nothing but end-to-end music, which leaves very little time to remove oneself from the slipstream and relax. That’s where ChinaShop comes in. We’ve always fancied ourselves as purveyors of good taste, communicating the best of what’s out there straight to your computer monitor, but this week we thought we’d go the extra mile provide a tangible service to the band’s themselves. The music makers. The dreamers of dreams. So here’s what we did.
Gallery Music Red Bull BPM Party feat. DJ Manny & Felix Da Housecat
Let me preface this by saying I’ve never been to Austin before. I know, I know. Tragic, right? San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso and maybe a few other random destinations, but never Austin. But if everything is bigger in Texas and Austin is “weird,” then I felt comfortable in my assumption that everything would be big, weird, and maybe smell a bit like barbecue. Maybe some beer. Okay a lot of beer. And a ton of food trucks.
Urban Exploration Those Who “Keep Austin Weird”
Not many librarians are known for their influences on pop culture. Austin Community College librarian Red Wassenich is. But it’s not Mr. Wassenich as a man that is cause for celebrity, it’s the 3 words mentioned offhand on a local radio station in the spring of 2000 that are -“KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD.” This offhand remark has since become the slogan for a campaign to preserve small-ish local businesses, a merchandise cash cow for local tourism, and inspired copycats such as “Keep Portland Beered.” For me this slogan reflects much more on the populace of the “15th largest city in the US” and the dualities of its inhabitants.
Music Ozomatli Thrill-ers the Crowd
“We played a show just so we could steal Uli,” spat Ozomatli’s Wil-Dog Abers out back this night at some shady sound studio somewhere in North Dallas, TX. “Ozomatli’s always been… kind of a competitive band. Our roots go back to where Uli was in two bands.” Wil-Dog continues speaking now of the “solo Ozo” Ulises Bella. “He was in our band and the band that we were opening up for at Viper Room. And our whole purpose was to steal Uli from this band he had this allegiance with… and we did.” And I believe it.
Music Red Bull Soundclash Dallas: Talib Kweli vs. Ozomatli
A few years ago, Brooklyn native and Kanye West collaborator, Talib Kweli did a brief stint on tour in China. Accompanying him were an eclectic band of heathens who’s engraving on the plate of their 2 Grammys reads, “Ozomatli.” As close quarters living oft goes, that mangle of musical madness sparked a friendship which has culminated into the battle of beats before me, better know as Red Bull’s Sound Clash.
