Gallery Music Idle Warship Strikes Amoeba

January 13, 2012 - 10:36 am

Anything Talib Kweli does deserves attention. When Jay-Z and 50 Cent deem you their “favorite rapper,” you know you’re doing something right. The hip-hopping all star’s latest endeavor, Idle Warship, is a collaboration with vocalist extraordinaire, Res. After working together on Talib’s extensive catalog of studio releases, the two got together to experiment with new sounds.

Talib and Res took the stage at Amoeba Music in Hollywood on Wednesday, verifying to the crowd that venturing past their musical comfort zones was a glorious decision on both of their parts. The duo, backed by a full live band, performed songs off their recent release, Habits of The Heart. Talib took a moment to thank the crowd for supporting both of their solo careers over the years and explained that his goal for Idle Warship is to “create something new and entertaining but to have fun at the same time.”

The duo entertained shoppers with compelling lyrics such as “Check 1, 2. We are live. Back it up like a hard drive.” In the midst of an energetic stage show, Res debuted her brand new flip cam. Talib playfully accused her of being “about 3 years behind the times” while she proudly aimed it at the audience and fellow on stage musicians throughout various points in the performance (we were standing in the front row and are totally ending up on You Tube).

Surrounded by a giant kid friendly map of Texas, flood control interactive computers, and a dinosaur bone reconstruction exhibit, Talib Kweli stood wiping sweat from his brow and deciding where to eat with friends. Featured Gallery Music Q&A With The Indelible Talib Kweli

March 11, 2011 - 2:52 pm

Hip-hoppers at Winter Music Conference this year got a special treat when the Red Bull Music Academy announced a special two-day event featuring indelible MC Talib Kweli and producer 9th Wonder that hoped to provide an intimate look into two of the game’s most talented and influential artists. After an interview and Q&A session on Thursday, the two artists would then regroup at the Delano Hotel’s Florida Room for an “On The Floor” performance. We had the chance to interview Talib before he took the stage for the interview portion of the event, held at the Raleigh Hotel. Then, due to flight delays with 9th and the session moderator, we jumped on the mic to kick off the discussion while we waited for the rest of the crew to arrive. Below is a portion of our conversation.

Music Talib Kweli’s Road Rules

February 4, 2011 - 11:18 am

Talib Kweli 2011

Talib Kweli learned an important lesson on the road. Before the Brooklyn MC broke out with Reflection Eternal, Black Star with Mos Def or embarked upon a successful solo career, he saw the importance of visiting places beyond the New York state line.

“Traveling has definitely enabled me to appreciate other cultures musically, even cultures within hip-hop, whether it’s Down South, Midwest, West Coast,” says Kweli, whose new album, Gutter Rainbows, is due in stores today (January 25) and features the song “Mr. International,” which details his life on the road. “Me working with Hi-Tek early in my career and spending a lot of time in Cincinnati really opened me up. When I was first in Cincinnati, they were listening to a lot of E-40. E-40’s Federal was the album that they were on. Then it moved from the West Coast with E-40 and Spice 1 and Dr. Dre influence to a Down South influence with the rise of Master P.”

Music Kanye West’s Top 10 Producing Credits

January 4, 2011 - 11:36 am

Kanye West

Before he was throwing temper tantrums at the MTV VMAs and being labeled the biggest jerk in the history of hip hop, and before he released his critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West was producing some of the dopest beats the game has ever heard.

Kanye’s career as a rap artist didn’t exactly take off like a Gulfstream en route to the south of France. Prior to reaching superstar status as a rap artist, many labels were reluctant to sign Kanye West “the producer” to a record deal.

It took a 2003 car accident to inspire Kanye to write and produce “Through the Wire”, a track he recorded with his jaw wired shut. With critical acclaim, his career as a respected rap artist and eventual superstar was launched. For Mr. West, there was no looking back.

Luckily for you, we enjoyed history class in high school. So much so that we decided to take a look back and list our favorite pre-superstar Kanye-produced tracks:

Music Red Bull Soundclash Dallas: Talib Kweli vs. Ozomatli

November 1, 2010 - 12:17 pm

Talib Kweli @ Red Bull Soundclash Dallas 2010

A few years ago, Brooklyn native and Kanye West collaborator, Talib Kweli did a brief stint on tour in China. Accompanying him were an eclectic band of heathens who’s engraving on the plate of their 2 Grammys reads, “Ozomatli.”  As close quarters living oft goes, that mangle of musical madness sparked a friendship which has culminated into the battle of beats before me, better know as Red Bull’s Sound Clash.

Event Featured BC ONE: Showdown in NYC

November 19, 2009 - 3:48 pm

Winner

Last night’s Red Bull BC One at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City was a highly anticipated event.  As the biggest one-on-one b-boy competition in the world, being selected as a finalist is an honor in itself.  Tickets sold out in record time, the line stretched across several blocks, & the crowd waited excitedly & impatiently to storm the venue.

Inside, sixteen b-boys from eleven countries battled it out for the number one spot, but despite a strong showing from the U.S.A. courtesy of Kid Glyde (NYC), Thesis (Seattle), Morris (Sacramento) & Cloud (L.A.), they were no match for one edgy Frenchman: Lilou.

He was totally merciless, bringing a combination of mirthful spirit & sick power moves.  He defeated the Ukraine’s Kolobok in the first round, destroyed Thesis in the quarterfinals, & absolutely decimated Morris in the semis.
