Featured Gallery Music Lords of Altamont: ‘60s State of Mind
March 20, 2010 - 11:25 am
During their second show in Austin this week, L.A.’s five-piece band The Lords of Altamont plus their go-go dancer are crammed on to the small stage in the corner of Cheapo Discs. This garage punk crew doesn’t let tight quarters confine their energy though as frontman Jake “The Preacher” Cavaliere leads the way shoving his vintage organ around and at one point, jumping on top of it and still performing. That’s the way the Lords roll.
Art/Design Gallery Austin Speed Shop
March 20, 2010 - 10:59 am
The Austin Speed Shop is somewhat of an Austin institution, and renowned within the hot rod and custom car culture scene.
Their passion is apparent in everything they do. From the shop’s reception area which is decorated with original work by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth to the garage with its “Hot Rod Church Of God” sign, these are people who live and breathe their craft.
Urban Exploration Uncommon Objects
March 19, 2010 - 4:21 pm

As much as I love to explore new cities, for me no trip is complete without a thorough investigation of the best places to shop. I can’t help it — it’s just how I am. I do judge a city partially on its materialistic merits.

Gallery Music Japanther Rocks Carniville
March 19, 2010 - 3:15 pm
The first hard rays of Austin’s afternoon sun were going to have to work a bit harder to beat back the crowd at Carniville on Thursday afternoon. As it was, the heat was no match for the lure of free beer, a wild musical lineup, actual carny rides and corndogs. Those assembled quickly formed the beer recyler line – that is getting in line for a beer, then getting to the back of the line, drinking it in time to get a refill. Surely not a great combination with the Tilt-aPuke spinning madly in the background. In the background, DJ Paul Devroe spun some slow southern fried rap cuts, perfectly made for such lazy sun drenched and immobile afternoons. The line started swaying and jiggling, and just waiting for something to really catch hold.

Austin TX Music Franki Chan’s Austin Takeover
March 17, 2010 - 12:04 pm
For the tens of thousands of music heads who descend on Austin, TX each March for the SXSW music conference, the accompanying day parties have grown to equal the official night time showcases. And no place is this more true than this year’s Carniville—three days of music and mayhem presented by Mad Decent, Jelly NYC and IHeartComix. With headline acts Major Lazer, The Walkmen and Diplo, plus almost 40 other artists, rides, games…oh, and free booze, this is one fiesta not to be missed. Chinashop will be there and we asked IHeartComix head Franki Chan to get us psyched. Read Full Story
Music The Vines
December 11, 2009 - 5:35 pm
There’s something different yet oh-so-familiar about The Vines. They play unpolished proto-punk–the kind your daddy would have liked, probably, had he been a punk rocker, perhaps the kind The MC5 and some of their cohorts of the time would have churned out. There’s even a little bit of, dare I say, The Pistols themselves in there, a bit of the Clash–if you remember what loud, distorted guitar, a chugging, bottom-end bass, and just good old-fashioned Marshall amp feedback was like. It might be a welcome change from all the teenybopper pseudo-punk you hear nowadays, and is best appreciated LIVE–in this case, at the SXSW Festival, and available now on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
Music Late of the Pier
April 3, 2009 - 10:02 am
Jack Paradise would like you to know that 2009 will birth the third coming of the “Summer of Love” and he personally would like to wish you “Happy Hunting”.
I can’t tell you with any certainty just what in the hell he his talking about at this moment, as I’m a tad busy getting my ass kicked at Connect-Four by Red Dog Consuela. Not to mention that it is bat shit loud in here and he could’ve said something else. You see, I happen to be at a press junket with three quarters of Late of the Pier.

Film Joe Swanberg: Mumblecore’s Soft Spoken Saint
April 2, 2009 - 9:23 am

Joe Swanberg’s first feature, Kissing on the Mouth, cost a mere $1,200 and his expectations for it were realistic. He thought a few people might kind of like his little movie. Joe didn’t expect his heart-wrenchingly realistic autopsy of male/female relationships to spawn a style that quickly evolved into a movement known as “Mumblecore.”
Mumblecore is indie films’ tastiest flavor and it’s about to emerge onto the shores of the mainstream. Swanberg’s latest, Alexander the Last, premieres at SXSW and, in a bold move by distributor IFC, will bypass theatrical distribution and debut as VOD (video-on-demand) for anyone with internet access to see.
Joe reminisces fondly about film, fun and South by…
