So there’s this concert happening in April. Some pretty cool bands are playing. We thought you should know about it.

Gallery Music Shoot First (While Smiling): Flying Lotus
Within five minutes of Flying Lotus’ set on the Red Bull Music Academy stage at Movement on Memorial Day, it was obvious why he was closing down the stage for the weekend. Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison) came in with a “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality. After rumors that he might be late (no one wanted to see his much anticipated set reduced), Ellison arrived like he had something to prove.
Gallery Music COACHELLA: DAY 3 RECAP
Friday you have boundless energy. Saturday you’re crisp from the sun and mildly hoarse, but you’ve still got your legs underneath you. Sunday, however, is when the battle is won or lost; when true heroes are made (or broken) on the grassy proving ground of the Indio desert. It’s Day Three. Do you know where you parked your car?

Music Radiohead: The Kings Of Limbo
It was ironic that news of Radiohead’s latest album came like a flash while early morning risers were still scanning Facebook for lingering commentary of the previous night’s Grammy Awards. Indeed, the undisputed sovereigns of post-rock had slipped quietly through the night, undetected even by those who considered Esperanza Spalding a shoo-in for Best New Artist. But here we are in the wake of Radiohead’s latest foray into the great unknown—The King Of Limbs—a “newspaper album” named as such for the large collection of artwork that accompanies the physical version, or because it reports on the current state of its creators, or maybe it’s a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the “hear today, gone tomorrow” nature of today’s recorded music product. With Radiohead, there’s rarely one definitive answer. No doubt you’ve already heard bits and pieces of it, so let’s get on with the show.
Music Mandy’s Music Mail 2/18/11
We’re New Here the (insanely awesome) Jamie xx remix album of Gil Scott Heron’s I’m New Here doesn’t come out until the 21st, but the folks over at The Guardian have provided us with a full album stream this week! *Happy panda paws in the air!* I. Love. This. Album. So much.
The visual for Cee-Lo Green’s “Bodies” is not merely a music video but “an animated short motion picture,” which is kind of pretentious but as it’s Cee-Lo (and I love him) he gets a pass. The “animated short motion picture” was directed by Mikael Colombu and features appearances by Kerry Washington, Janelle Monae and Karl Lagerfeld. Bam. It’s an… interesting piece for sure, though the song isn’t my favorite off the album. Check it out below.

I’m a week into my three-week holiday in lovely London Town, and though I didn’t think it possible, I’ve fallen even more in love with this city (which is quite something considering it was rather stressful to begin with: first and second flights canceled due to the epic blizzard in New York; third flight massively delayed; didn’t get my luggage until this past Monday; phone completely broke – yay for my friend having a spare Blackberry). However, overall it’s been wonderful and me and London seem to get on pretty damn well. But more on my adventures later, let’s get to this week’s music news, shall we?
interview Music RJD2: The Solution to Your Music Snobbery
This may be a somewhat hastily-conceived notion, but DJ RJD2 might be the best thing to happen to the ever-expanding genre in years. He may be even the way to bridge that widening gap between the terminally unhip and old-fashioned instrument players (read: music snobs), and the countless DJs also slaving at their craft and bringing their own variety of musical influences into it all. Ramble (as people call him) is no exception.
The man is truly a diverse musician who explores nearly every conceivable musical classification — from jazz to trip-hop, from 80′s synth tinkery to film scores and soundtracks, from country licks to stand-up comic bits, he always manages to make it all blend together perfectly. And RJ’s worked hard to get this far, beginning nearly 20 years ago, steadily climbing his way to the top of that mountainous pile. From the jazzed-out funk of soul of “Here and Now” to the Kill Bill-worthy, exploitation film-soundtrack reverberations of “Take the Picture Off”, should you talk to anyone worth their weight in music criticism, you’ll hear nothing but the best about the guy.
Clever, diverse, and lending that certain undefinable, sprawling epic-ness to his mish-mashes, RJD2 is ahead of the game. Recently Ramble sat down and chatted with ChinaShop about his history, his influences, and how he’s gotten so far.
