Gallery Music NOFX as told by Christine “Cece” Sherman

March 31, 2011 - 10:49 am

Long Beach resident Christine “Cece” Sherman has taken on a daunting task: to learn every song ever written by Californian punk rock legends NOFX and re-interpret them as folk songs on the acoustic guitar. NOFX’s lyrical depth and poignant satire take on a whole new life when stripped down to their basics. Grown men have been known to shed a tear when hearing the songs executed so delicately.

There’s Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Woody and Arlo Guthries, and now… Cece Sherman? Stranger things have happened.

Since debuting last fall, Cece, as she is called by friends, has already opened for such acts as Chuck Ragan, The Aggrolites, Exene Cervenka and The White Buffalo. And she made her first official tour to Austin to play alongside bands Cheap Girls, Continental, Joey Briggs, The Sparring and Death Punch at the Slidebar/Old Shoe Records/Iron Fist Clothing day party during SXSW 2011.

Between sets, Cece busked along 6th Street and that’s where we made this video of Eat The Meek.

Gallery Music NOFX: Success Is A Drag

January 14, 2011 - 7:51 am

Legendary punks NOFX are known for pushing boundaries.

Their cutting edge documentary NOFX: Backstage Passport shocked TV viewers with their global escapades in debauchery on tour when it aired on Fuse in 2008. Earlier this year, singer Fat Mike’s alter ego Cokie The Clown got banned from Emo’s in Austin, Texas when he served what appeared to be urine-infused tequila to an audience of unsuspecting fans (it later proved to be an elaborate hoax). Now for the band’s latest exploit: NOFX dressed in full drag for their New Year’s Heave party at the Wiltern.

Featured Gallery Music Shonen Knife Slices Silverlake’s Spaceland

September 17, 2010 - 10:37 am

Japan’s very own Shonen Knife sliced into Silverlake’s Spaceland on their current Freetime tour. As would be expected of such an occasion, the crowd was exponentially fashionable. For anyone who hasn’t yet had the pleasure of discovering Shonen Knife for themselves, imagine three adorable girls from Osaka, Japan who play garage-rock pop-punk perfection with titles like “Antonio Baka Guy” “Twist Barbie” and “Sushi Bar.” Their musical dollops of ear candy have charmed the likes of Kurt Cobain (see the video below), Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Redd Kross. The latter even named an album for them, 1989′s Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them.  Shonen Knife countered with a love song about Los Angeles entitled “Redd Kross” extolling their longing for long haired boys and hard music that come with the territory.

Music Supersuckers, and I ain’t talking ’bout Lollipops!

July 13, 2009 - 2:41 pm

Supersuckers

If you have no idea who the Supersuckers are, then I feel sorry for you.  Sorry because you have not yet experienced the (self-proclaimed) greatest rock-n-roll band in the world!  If you have heard of them then, I’m jealous of you.  Jealous because…well, let’s just say if the Supersuckers had a spread in Tiger Beat, they’d be plastered all over my bedroom wall.

The Supersuckers have almost a cult following of die-hard fans.  You just don’t kinda sorta like the Supersuckers…you fucking LOVE the Supersuckers.  Their sound is honest-to-goodness American rock-n-roll: unpretentious, tongue-in-cheek and sacrilegious.  Their songs have an anthem-like quality to them, with raking guitar intros that make you jump up and down waiting for the rest of the band to kick in.  Their songs are about fucked-up relationships, getting fucked up and not giving a fuck.  They draw upon an archetypal rock sound to make their music: from the Ramones to Thin Lizzy to Social Distortion.

Music Turbonegro: Punk as F@#K!

May 7, 2009 - 2:42 pm

Turbonegro plays coachella

You may think to be truly punk rock you have to hail from London or New York? But you might be surprised if I told you that Oslo Norway was were it’s actually happening!

Turbonegro has been living the punk rock drama for the past 20 years. When speaking with Happy Tom this weekend I likened them to the Andy Warhol’s of the punk rock scene. He wasn’t especially impressed with my comparison. He said,”That’s terrible, didn’t he get shot”. But my point, and I did have one, was that Warhol really paid attention to popular culture, took the opinion and vices of the day and served it right back to the Richies all the while mocking their moral high ground. In essence Turbonegro has been paying attention to the most ridiculous trends in rock culture and then serving it right back to the world, only suped up, fast, hard, and totally rock.  As Happy Tom says, “We started off as a parody, and ended up a revolution”.
