Gallery Music Eye to Eye with Butch Walker

September 7, 2011 - 7:45 am

Butch Walker was supposed to be one of the headlining artists at this year’s Sunset Junction Music Fest but due to some pesky street fines and fine print on contracts, the festival was cancelled. That didn’t stop Butch and his army of Black Widows from performing, however. “We were all dressed up and nowhere to go when they canned it,” joked Butch. The guys made the best of it, with plan B being a 30-minute set in the courtyard of their new label, Dangerbird Records. The show consisted of the band performing the entire track list off of the latest and greatest Butch Walker and the Black Widows release, The Spade. A giant crowd packed into the outdoor courtyard and even Justin Kirk (Andy Botwin on Weeds) came out for the soiree.

Prior to the performance, Butch sat down with ChinaShop to discuss the new album, embarrassing tattoos, and his distaste for synthesizer music.

Geek Geek in a ChinaShop: Jessica Mills Holds Us In An Awkward Embrace

March 21, 2011 - 12:17 pm

Jessica Mills

If you haven’t been watching Awkward Embraces, you’ve been missing out on one of the best shows to come along in any medium. Yeah, you heard me. It’s that good, and that funny. Awkward Embraces tells the story of three friends – Jessica, Candis, and Lyndsey – and their dating misadventures. It’s a simple concept, but what makes the webseries special is not only the incredible chemistry between the three leads and the sharp writing, but the fact that the lead character is an honest representation of a geek girl.

Awkward, but charming; naive about relationships, but willing to learn; beautiful with a real body, not the anorexic “beauty” too often favored in Hollywood; Jessica is a joy to watch because she feels like a real person. She also feels like a real female geek, dropping Star Trek references as easily as she breathes; feeling the desperate need to explain why her Star Wars t-shirt is funny even when it’s clear the person she’s speaking to won’t get it, or care. When I saw the episode where Jessica loses herself in talking about “Darmok,” her favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, I squealed loudly thinking, “That’s my favorite episode, too!!” What every woman I’ve introduced to Awkward Embraces, geek or not, has said to me after watching is “Oh my God! This sounds like me and my friends!”

Music Magical Properties hits Chicago

Magical Properties Tour Chicago 2010

The amount of options on Halloween weekend this year for live music in Chicago was dumbfounding yet word of the Magical Properties Tour stopping by the Double Door was hard to pass up. While The Gaslamp Killer and Daedelus have both made repeat appearances individually in Chicago during 2010, seeing the two on the same bill outside of L.A. is a rarity—one only heightened by the addition of 12th Planet and Teebs to this ridiculous bill of beatsmiths.
