Photography has as many aims as it has photographers. Some use the medium in order to recreate a subject in an especially raw, candid light, capturing a moment, which would have otherwise remained silent. Others use the lens as a tool to disorient an audience’s view of normalcy by dressing the mundane in garb of the absurd. Up and coming photographer Jennifer Popperl uses her lens to allow for multiple, seemingly incompatible moments, to exist simultaneously.
MIAMI – December 7, 2011 – This past weekend at Miami Beach’s Art Basel, the international art festival’s first-ever 3D art installation transformed Ocean Drive’s famed Tides Hotel into Art Basel’s largest canvas at more than 8,000 square feet. Inspired by the famous graphic design style seen in 1980s and early 1990s video games, now referred to as 8-bit art, the installation was presented by Hyundai and created by Pearl Media, a non-traditional media and production company specializing in groundbreaking media and art experiences.
SCREEEEeeeeeECH!!!, my tires squeal to a stop with what I hope is that cool reverse looking strobe effect you get on movies. “Holy shit! I gotta let you go there’s a clown outside,” I yell into the smog lit sky hoping enough of it would somehow bend around my face to terminate the conversation taking place inside that space age earwig The Man makes me wear whilst driving. It falls to the floor.
This past weekend, Seattle was host to the International Festival of Electronic Music, Performance, Visual Art and New Media; known to the slightly less eloquent as the Decibel Festival and #dBFest to your Twitter feed. A nine-year institution, Decibel always books a wide range of talent, pundits and educators for its highly immersive, four-day festival, and who better to snag a headlining spot than synth provocateurs Ladytron. The Liverpool quartet’s fifth and latest full-length, Gravity The Seducer, is yet another milestone in a career that’s spanned 12 years, and reinforces their position as a band that’s always put artistic integrity, design and musicianship far above any other endeavor.
We asked keyboardist and songwriter Reuben Wu, also an accomplished photographer and graphic designer, to document their weekend at Decibel with a few choice images. What inspires him behind the lens?
“Anything that I find interesting, really,” he says. “I took a trip to Borneo on a week off DJing and my host said to me, ‘You are a most unusual tourist.’ A lot of the time it is not just the subject which is interesting, but the context it is in, so you have to communicate that.”

The Red Bull Illume iPad App, fresh from the makers of all things kick-ass, is an inspiring showcase of imagery which illuminates the top 250 action and adventure sports images submitted to the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2010.

Bamboozle just occurred in New Jersey this past weekend and I tasked the talents of photographer Joe Gall to capture the people and mayhem of the scene.
