Brooklyn, NY US – Last year Dynomighty Design, makers of the Mighty Wallet, learned of the inspiring story of Brian Christopher who was, at the time, a homeless Navy Vet who had found a Mighty Wallet® full of cash without ID in the streets of Boston. Faced with a  moral dilemma of wanting to buy gifts for his own kids he nobly decided to turn the Mighty Wallet® in to a local Police station. Thanks to a receipt inside the wallet the Police found the original owner, a bike messenger, who was reunited with her Mighty Wallet® and $172 in cash.

Brian’s gesture was rewarded with an outpouring of generosity from  all around the country in the form of letters, media attention and donations to Brian and The New England Center for Homeless Veteran’s. The story embodied the spirit of Christmas but was also an example of the valor that our service men and women uphold even under the toughest of circumstances and called attention to the challenges that many of our Vets face after service.

At the time Dynomighty wanted to do something to honor Brian’s simple act and then we discovered that Brian was also an Artist. We had the idea to create a unique opportunity to further Brian’s artistic ambitions and at  the same time give him a means of financial stability by inviting him to create his very own Mighty Wallet® which Dynomighty could then sell and distribute throughout the world. We reached out to Brian at the height of his media attention and put a plan together to realize this opportunity in the following year.

I have to point out a line in your bio: “We are Semi Precious Weapons from New York Mother-Fucking City, and we hope you ALL GET LAID!” Is this your official advice to fans?

Justin: Oh yes. That’s great advice. I think as long as you don’t hate yourself, getting laid always ends well. If you hate yourself, getting laid can end horribly.

Just no regrets the next morning, right?

Justin: Exactly.

Justin, tell me about these gravity-defying kicks that you are known to do on stage in your custom made Stuart Weitzman heels.

Justin: They just happen. I wish I had a better story for it but it just kind of occurs.

Do you always wear the heels?

Justin: Everyday.

Same ones?

Justin: Oh no I have a couple but they are the same make. I have ones that are now covered in weave. Those look pretty natural.

 You guys are very musically trained…

Dan: I have a degree in classical composition.

Justin: I’m trained in songwriting.

Let’s talk about inspiration for your songs. I love the one line, “I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous.” Was that literally about just being up and coming and not able to pay your bills?

Justin: Exactly! Well we still are very up and coming and broke but we obviously spent the last year and a half touring with the biggest star in the world so that was a much different experience than normal. It was a very expensive experience and we spent all the money we got on that. The album that is out is mainly inspired by living in New York and being really broke and being fantastic and trying to have the best time possible. Really really attractive women that are extremely self destructive are also inspiring. Goats – we have a pet goat and he’s very inspiring.

You have a goat?

Justin: Yes we do. He lives in Beverly Hills. We are living in our manager’s pool house at the moment.

Justin: He has 160 followers! The goat is going to be so much more famous than we are!

Is it true that you can domesticate a goat and even litter box train them?

Justin: You can! It just takes a lot of time because they are an angry creature. He hates our band.

Do you ever play in front of him?

Justin: All the time.

Dan: He comes on stage with us sometimes.

Does he have earplugs?

Justin: He does.

Tell me about touring with Lady Gaga. Was that absolutely surreal?

Justin: It was great. She joined us on stage at Lollapalooza. She was headlining that night and she came to our show, which was really awesome. She’s been a fan of ours since she was like a 19-year old brunette girl living in New York City; that’s how we met her, because she was a fan, and then we heard that she was also a performer so we had her open for us a couple of times in 2007 and then she became the biggest star in the world.

So you can kind of say that you helped break Lady Gaga.

Justin: Well she has said it for us so we don’t even need to quote ourselves, you can quote her! No she broke herself. She’s the hardest-working woman in the world!

Your first album was funded by sales from Justin’s jewelry line? Tell us more about the jewelry. Are you still making it?

Justin: Music is what I really care about but in terms of selling merch – obviously we sell t-shirts and stuff but we can also sell jewelry, which we have a real history with. I think our fans respond to it because it’s honest. It’s something that all of us made – over 300,000 pieces of jewelry when we lived in New York to pay our rent and to make and album and to fly to LA a bunch of times to play. We flew 6 people to London on the jewelry sales to play like 6 shows in 7 days. I think that the fact that we can also sell these necklaces now and the fans know the history and the drama and literally the blood and sweat that went into it, makes the fans feel that much closer.

And the line is also in Barneys?

Justin: Yes. It’s called Fetty. It means fucked up and pretty. It’s all sterling silver. At Urban Outfitters it’s all base metal – brass and it was at Hot Topic for a while. It’s been an amazing ride.

In 2008 in the UK, you were playing at the Death Disco Club and Kate Moss came out and danced with you. Is that what helped bring the band into the mainstream market?

Justin: That was definitely a good moment …

Dan: For a couple of people in the band!

Justin: But I think we have had an amazing really weird up and down journey to where we are right now which has involved lots of unbelievable and inspiring female musicians and celebrities and models and we are very fortunate to have all of these women think that we are awesome. Kate Moss was kind of the one to really set it all off. She kind of is the coolest woman in the world so it makes sense that Kate Moss was the one to make it happen.

Drop The Lime (born Luca Venezia in NYC) is not only an electronic producer and DJ, but he found the dance label Trouble & Bass. He unleashed his unique brand of dance/rockabilly onto a fevered crowd this past Friday night at Avalon in Hollywood. Deep resounding bass bombs forced your attention and moved your feet. DTL’s refreshing blend of the classic rock n roll standards with an electronic rhythm that leads you resoundingly into the night.

Plus, and you can’t always say this about DJ’s, the man can actually sing. He’s got a swagger and confidence that is a unique find in the DJ set.  If you will be in Atlanta GA on July  22nd head to The Quad to catch him. This might be the last chance you get for a while. In the meanwhile, let the music play…

Drop The Lime by Drop The Lime

Despite my complete love for music, aside from the occasional spin on the ol’ salsa dance floor, Latin music isn’t something I’m all that familiar with or find myself listening to very often, so I was eager to check out just what LAMC had in store.

Whilst I enjoyed pretty much every show I checked out, Wednesday night’s acoustic showcase at S.O.B.’s was by far the highlight of the week.

Rocking up to the venue just as the show began, I took a seat in a corner booth as the evening’s first act, Curarto Poder (a Venezuelan hip hop group whose unique style fuses street lyrics with folk verses and traditional rhythms), stepped on stage. From the moment the first note was played, I could feel the fatigue of the day wash away as I was swept up in the performance in front of me. Though the setting intimate, the energy was incredible; it’s such a refreshing sight to see a majority of an audience up on its feet, dancing around (an oddity in New York City where it seems as though most crowds are too consumed with acting nonchalant to let their hair down, so to speak, and immerse themselves in what’s in front of them). I’ve come to notice that an active audience is one of the key components to a truly excellent show. When an audience is responsive, the performer becomes further engaged and gives a more heartfelt – and, arguably, better – performance, which in turn causes the audience to become even more alive and so forth in the circular cycle.

Aside from the infectious, electric energy, the other wonderful aspect of this particular showcase was the variety of artists featured; from One Chot, a Venezuelan rap crew (whose lead rapper was sporting the longest set of dreads I’ve ever seen in my life (down to his feet… seriously), still quite amazed as to how home boy wasn’t constantly tripping over them), to a costume clad rock group, La Vida Boheme (also hailing from Venezuela), to Gaby Moreno, an LA based, Guatemalan raised, singer-songwriter whose stripped down set had the audience rapt with attention. As Ms. Moreno sang, I glanced around the room and noticed each person in the crowd had stopped what they were doing – drinks were held suspended in motion, conversations paused mid-sentence – everyone’s focus was centered on her soulful performance. It was beautiful.

It was Sunday afternoon and I set out to enjoy the last of the Northside Festival riches. Four days of music and art were drawing to a close and I was content with the events of the weekend. I fought my way through crowds, rubbed shoulders with indie music celebs, I saw more shows in four days than I have since SXSW and I’ve got a list of EP’s to download.

There were a handful of day shows but none to stand out. I stopped in at Spike Hill and saw Whale Belly and Clouder before making a trip to the Brooklyn Flea market to claim my free food item. Wee! Finally, a free thing at Northside Fest and in the shadow of a breathtaking skyline! I’m not gonna encourage Northside Fest to turn into SXSW ‘cause last year was so damn corporate that I couldn’t see a truly innovative indie band because Kanye’s HUGE EGO was blocking the way. At the same time, you guys gotta get some more sponsors. Sponsors that are willing to hand out free samples. Fred Water was one of the main contributors and I didn’t get one free bottle of water. In fact, they were selling them at the main stage for $2 a pop. Most people there had paid $35 or more to get into a hardly even half sold out show and they can’t even get a glass o’ water? Shame on you.

Maybe I sound like a mooch but three SX’s ago I picked up a sample of Old Spice’s ‘Fresh Collection’ Denali and haven’t bought a different stick of deodorant again. #justsayin

Later I stopped by Cameo Gallery and saw Christopher Paul Stelling pour his mother loving heart out on stage. Honestly, when the dude went on, I was thinking, ‘Oh, another singer songwriter. These guys are a dime a dozen.’ Then he started to pick the guitar. Then he started to wail. He wailed, whined, gritted and ground his way right into the existential conversation in my brain (its a reoccurring conversation, prompted when viewing great art, where I chide myself for not being a better artist). Stelling is a truly compelling artist. He lets himself feel everything and then pours it out into the songs he writes in an absolutely obtrusive manner. Listen to his music and you’re gonna get chills, you’re gonna wanna yell and you’re gonna be reminded that as much as you want to, you don’t need to listen to electro-pop dance remixes for every second of the day. Breathe a little. Sit down. Imagine you’re on a train. Broke down in Kentucky but you made a friend who shared his moonshine. Now you’re both drunk and raspy and hes schooling you on life in the country via his song. That is what listening to this guys music felt like.

I walked out of Cameo Gallery, squinting into the sun to find that, alas, I was still in Brooklyn. I needed a break. During every festival there comes a time when you just wanna get away and go see some music not festival related. Luckily I knew a couple ‘o guys playing a show at Southpaw so I jumped in a cab and headed down to see Elliot and the Ghost.

Lead singer Will Thompson is recently displaced from Austin, Texas but you can still hear the hill country in his voice. They recently added a keyboardist to their lineup which seemed to add some smoothness and depth to Will’s otherwise gritty sound.

I fled back to Williamsburg just in time to catch what ended up being my favorite performance of the weekend. Not surprisingly, the award goes to YACHT, who just launched a new album that is better than and different from their last but still gets your feet moving (remember what I said about not needing to listen to dance music all the time? I take it back.) and your body shaking. Oh and good luck trying to take your eyes off of Claire. The bands performances are always quite interactive (‘This one’s a singalong!’ said Claire before their hit, ‘Psychic City’)  and it felt much more like a meditative dance gathering than anything resembling a concert.

Then Northside Festival drew to a close and the people were happy because there was plenty of music to go around. I had trouble figuring out if this was a festival for the people or for the potential money-lenders. At the same time, if you didn’t know the festival was going on, you may have walked down Bedford Avenue thinking it was just any other day in Brooklyn. Nothing happened that doesn’t normally happen… it just all happened during one weekend and under one name. Anybody who lives in Willamsburg knows that the neighborhood is changing fast. We can’t stop it, nor do we really have any right to; this spot was someone else’s way before it was ours. So lets feel lucky that we have Northside Festival and continue to support the events that promote the uniqueness of the area. You guys can stick around and drink Starbucks, I’m moving to Greenpoint.

Most people in attendance were there to see Guided by Voices. I know this because the demographics were much more something you’d expect to see in Williamsburg’s southern neighbor, Park Slope; lots of old dudes and so, so many children. I totally wish I was one of those babies at music festivals with the hot pink ear protectors on my head and I bet if, god forbid, I ever birth such a thing I’m gonna drag it along with me. Maybe thats what outside day shows are for. Bring your kid to a music festival during the day and everyone will glance over and be like, ‘OMG, isnt that rocker kid so cute. And look at his mother! I hope I have that many tattoos by the time I’m a parent.’ Bring your kid to a bar at 1 AM and you’re likely to get picked up by social services.

Anyway, it was kind of a weird vibe as Surfer Blood played. Nobody was really into it and it just turns out that they are more of a late night headliner than a day show opener because I heard that they nearly brought the house down at the Knitting Factory later that evening with people waiting in line for hours to get in. Their big hit, ‘Swim,’ off of 2010’s Astro Coast, channels 80’s power ballads vibes. Honestly, I could imagine a world where a bar full of frat dudes pump their fist and scream along to this song like they do every single time ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ comes on the juke box. That’s not to say I don’t like it. Hell, I’ll admit it, I used to like Journey. Plus they use do some really fun and creative things with their guitars and their voices. The entire show I couldn’t stop thinking, ‘Who do these guys sound like?’ It’s kind of just that familiar reverb sound that James Mercer first commandeered, I think.

‘There’s lots of kids here. Cool, I like to see that,’ said the lead singer, John Paul Pitts, as he awkwardly condoned their presence. But then in an interesting/confusing turn of events, Pitts went down into the pit (hah) gave some high fives and then hoisted a bunch of tweeners on stage. I’m pretty sure they knew him and this was planned, but the intentions were unclear.

WAAVES took over the stage and I was wanting to run around and earmuff all of the kids. Lead singer Nathan Williams has a go-to-hell attitude that I usually enjoy but it just seemed weird with all of these moms, pops and toddlers around! Anyway, they played and their music was good if you like that kind of thing. Punky, pretentious and to the point. They toured with Best Coast last year so the tweeny turnout was huge for them too.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to take pictures of Guided by Voices. However, I can’t not mention them here for two reasons. First, I’m sure that is why there were lots of diapers there; GBV released their first album in 1987 so their true fan base is older and wiser. Second and more importantly, GBV has apparent influence on most of the music we listen to today and all of the music that was showcased in this festival. The lo-fi sound was triumphed by these guys while you were still sucking on a pacifier. So next time you’re listening to the latest indie record, lovin’ that grit and distortion, take a minute to appreciate GBV, for without whom you would not be able to enjoy this huge list of popular bands.

Even if you’ve never picked up a comic in your life, it’s likely that you’ve heard of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Most Expensive Broadway Show Ever! All those injuries! And when will it get out of previews and actually open? After much brouhaha, lots of money, and big changes in the creative team (namely, the dismissing of Julie Taymor and the hiring of Marvel writer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, to remedy a flawed book), Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has finally officially opened on Broadway!

And?

It was difficult to see the show completely untainted precisely because of all the bad press it’s received, but when the lights went down and the overture began, I banished my preconceived notions. This was a new show, and I was determined to see it on its own terms. Overall, I was rewarded for my open mind. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is a flawed show, but it also isn’t the train wreck you might expect. In fact, much of the show was incredibly enjoyable!

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark explores Spidey’s (Reeve Carney) origin story (NYC teen, Peter Parker, gets bitten by a genetically altered spider while on a school field trip to a science lab), his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Watson (Jennifer Damiano), and his decision, after a family tragedy, to become our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. If you’ve seen the film starring Tobey Maguire, you’ve already seen a lot of what’s on stage at the Foxwoods Theatre, as many of the story elements seem lifted directly from that script.

What makes this theater experience special is the way that what’s on the printed comics page can be brought to life on stage. There’s an enjoyable musical number in Act 1, called “Bouncing Off the Walls” during which Peter is first exploring his powers, and the set pieces (designed by George Tsypin) and the fight choreography coupled with the aerial work effectively recreate what you’d find in comic panels. In Act II, when we’re introduced to the supervillains Spider-Man will have to face, Taymor’s mask designs are just what the doctor ordered, creating an appropriately stylized interpretation of these well-known characters as well as introducing new characters to the mix. In general, the aerial work is what makes the show, and I made sure to give a standing ovation to the team of Spider-Men required to make it happen. They worked hard and made it look effortless. The aerial work here has revolutionized what is possible in a Broadway house.

Performance-wise, a clear stand-out was Patrick Page as scientist Norman Osborn who turns into Spider-Man’s arch nemesis, The Green Goblin. Osborn is a sensitive soul who genuinely wants to make the world a better place, and when the death of his wife prompts him to transform himself into the Goblin, he is all scene-stealing hilarity, giving us an unusually campy interpretation of a diabolical character. The other stand-out in the cast was Michael Mulheren as J. Jonah Jameson, the editor of The Daily Bugle who has it out for Spider-Man while also needing him to make headlines. In fact, one of the best things about his portrayal of JJJ, in addition to the impeccable comic timing he brought to the role, was a clarity about the character’s motivations. His conscious casting of Spider-Man as a villain because “helping people doesn’t sell papers,” as well as spotlighting why Peter and Mary Jane are so in love are two things that the book gets right that isn’t often clear in the comics.

However, as I said, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is a flawed show. Act I is uncomfortable to sit through, it’s so boring, whereas Act II actively captures the spirit of the comic and is entertaining, funny, and ultimately uplifting. It’s like watching two different shows. The character of Arachne, a holdover from Julie Taymor and Glen Berger’s original book, while performed by the wonderful TV Carpio, makes no dramatic sense here, and clutters what could have been an emotionally-charged narrative. You can tell that the original writing team didn’t respect the Spider-Man story enough to trust that it already had everything it needed, and chose to pile on what they thought was dramatic weight but ended up being useless filler. There’s also the matter of the ridiculous addition of a character called Swiss Miss to The Sinister Six. Taymor’s other additions to the Green Goblin’s motley crew of scientists turned genetically enhanced villains, like Swarm, a man made up of bees, make sense. But Swiss Miss was made after working with a genetically enhanced… swiss army knife?

For a show with Spider-Man right in the name, we get surprisingly little insight into Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and it is clear that the original writing team didn’t really understand him as a character. Which is a shame, as Reeve Carney is enormously talented and deserves more to do than this musical gives him. One performance I didn’t buy at all came from the miscast Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane. Not only was her acting and singing lifeless, but despite being an acceptable age to play the role in real life, she looked and acted way too old. I couldn’t escape the feeling that the young Peter Parker was being hit on by an older, skeevy babysitter.

But the show’s biggest flaw was the music. I’m a U2 fan, but just because you can write songs doesn’t mean you can write a musical, and Bono and The Edge clearly can’t. There was no narrative cohesion between musical numbers, and the lyrics were vague. Other than the occasional character name-dropping in the lyrics, you could take these songs and write a completely different musical around them without anyone being the wiser. There were also no standout songs, nothing that you leave the theater humming. They all blended together into a mess of mediocre, adult-contemporary pop. And for the record, in reference to a scene where recent high school graduates are at a club dancing to U2’s Vertigo: sorry, but teenagers haven’t danced to U2 at a club since 1989.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is all about spectacle and humor (at least in the second act). Don’t go to see it expecting life-changing theater, and you might end up having a good time.

Zach Condon, the lead singer and apparent ideas man behind the band, has created a sound so unique, I’d venture to say their style is unrivaled by any other American band. Employing Balkan, French, Brazilian and other world music sounds and styles, Condon found a place for the accordion, ukulele, tuba, french horn and other less popular but more traditional instruments. The result was a remarkable mix as voices and strings and an entire horn section bled together in a harmonic woven masterpiece.

Dom played Brooklyn Bowl to a surprisingly sparse but committed crowd. Pretty obviously still riding the wake of last years breakout hit, “Burn Bridges,” the band was a wasted mess on stage. It seems they went from zero to sixty last year and haven’t slowed down since. If you haven’t heard of them, don’t feel bad, they don’t even have a wikipedia page yet. Dom, the lead singer, is only 22. The keyboardist was only coherent enough to play on two songs, the aforementioned hit and their newest big single, “Living in America” and instead spent most of the show playing the tambourine, dancing and/or with a dude on his shoulders. Both songs are easy to listen to and easy to like and the sound is fresh. I really like them, they seem fun to party with and they sure as hell don’t give a fuck.

Memberz Only gave a performance to about ten people at the Music Hall of Williamsburg with DJ Rev McFly of Ninjasonik behind the tables. There were just too many other good things going on in Willyburg to be bothered with DJ sets and white rappers.

Deluka played Brooklyn Bowl and OMFG is Ellie Innocenti hott. Before we talk about the real stuff (their music) I feel its necessary to get that out of the way. Not in a todays pop star kind of way where the girl just fronts and has nothing to do with the creative process and can’t sing. Deluka is absolutely nothing like that. Ellie channels the greats of the past; Joan Jett, the Wilson sisters of Heart and is lucky to have a slew of cool guys playing with her. Beat, bass and synth heavy, the band throws a respectful nod towards the dance party hits of the 80’s. They remix Ke$ha and Britney for fun in their spare time. The entire crowd danced along and it was a good thing Brooklyn Bowl had the AC up last night.
