Foo Fighters at the SXSW Premier

People can’t seem to stop talking about the Foo Fighters right now. Having been around for over 15 years, they still remain as relevant as ever. On Tuesday night at the closing of the SXSW Film Festival and Interactive activities in Austin the band premiered their latest endeavor, a documentary film called Foo Fighters Back and Forth.

After hearing about this project for the past 6 months I had some expectations. I knew the band was recording in Dave Grohl’s garage in his home on tape, with legendary producer Butch Vig at the helm. I knew that cameras where there for something like 3 months capturing the process. I also knew that they shot at least 5 hours of footage at the bands secret show at the Roxy Theatre last month. So my anticipation was that this film would focus on the latest and greatest antics and the making of a fresh but yet nostalgic process of writing a record.

September 17, 2010 - 10:37 am

Japan’s very own Shonen Knife sliced into Silverlake’s Spaceland on their current Freetime tour. As would be expected of such an occasion, the crowd was exponentially fashionable. For anyone who hasn’t yet had the pleasure of discovering Shonen Knife for themselves, imagine three adorable girls from Osaka, Japan who play garage-rock pop-punk perfection with titles like “Antonio Baka Guy” “Twist Barbie” and “Sushi Bar.” Their musical dollops of ear candy have charmed the likes of Kurt Cobain (see the video below), Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and Redd Kross. The latter even named an album for them, 1989′s Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them.  Shonen Knife countered with a love song about Los Angeles entitled “Redd Kross” extolling their longing for long haired boys and hard music that come with the territory.

Music Mudhoney: What Doesn’t Die

August 12, 2010 - 10:47 am

Mudhoney blows you...a kiss

As their bio pretty much sums up the importance of this incendiary Seattle band, I’ll just paraphrase that while it may have been Nirvana that moved all eyes towards the Northwest, Mudhoney were the original originals. A notably garage rock-influenced, fuzz-addicted furious four that put out a little gem of an EP called Superfuzz Bigmuff, and ended up inspiring Cobain to dream of Nirvana. You might have even heard the guys gave birth to an early incarnation of Pearl Jam. I remember even as a wee lad hearing my friend’s teenage brother blasting Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge in his room, and proclaiming that they were the next big thing. Damned if he wasn’t rather prescient for a pimply-faced punk, as EGBDF ended up being the one that got them signed by Reprise. Though the group undeservedly got some backlash for putting out an album so soon after Kurt Cobain’s death, as if they were somehow responsible for it (even though they admittedly did make a remark about some anonymous musician blowing his brains out on “Into Yer Shtik”), they’ve been touted for years as one of the most important groups to ever come out of Washington, and one of the 2 or 3 that really gave birth to the Seattle Scene. You get the point; they were important. And for more on this seminal punked-out, garage-grunge quasi-metal outfit, head over to Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and listen to Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Dan Peters, and Guy Maddison give a Fireside Chat on their legendary exploits in and out of Seattle.
