If you think that garage sales are the only place to find epic record collections, think again. Wombleton Records in Highland Park is a used vinyl shop chalk full of rare and original LPs and 45s, which are hand selected from all over the world. The store is a collaboration between husband and wife record fanatics, Ian Marshall and Jade Gordon.

After a stint of helping his friends out with a BBQ restaurant/record shop in Silver Lake, Marshall decided to open a record store of his own and alas Wombleton Records was born.” I remained convinced that a small record shop that traveled around to different countries every few months to find unusual, desirable used LPs, could be sustainable and create an audience and a buzz. So I carried that notion around for six months or so and Jade and I talked it over and decided to give it a try,” explains Marshall.

Marshall, who admits that his personal album collection consists of over ten thousand LPs and probably fifteen thousand 45s, explains that his love for vinyl started at a very early age. “I got hooked as a little kid, when KISS were the big thing in the late 70s. Something about their records, with the colorful, elaborate packaging and the accessible pop power of the music; it was the perfect catalyst and it warped me into a record fetishist. I’ve been stalking around record stores since I was five, literally.”

The shelves of Wombleton are stocked with collection worthy vinyl gems from as far away as Brazil, Holland, and Jamaica. Among the treasures found on the shelves are personal favorites of Marshall like, Hot Gossip’s “Geisha Boys and Temple Girls” and The Blue Orchids “Greatest Hit/Money Mountain.” The shop’s latest collection is a mix of post-punk/UK indie original pressings purchased from Marshall’s last trip to England, obscure SF synth bands, and an array of 80’s and early 90’s albums, which Marshall says are the most in demand at the moment. The store is also packed with 60s pop, bubblegum, girl group, folk-rock, soul as well as seventies glam, prog, krautrock, punk, disco, pub rock, power pop, new wave and British charity shop, crate-digger classics. Wombleton claims to have the biggest selection of original 60s / 70s Jamaican pressings of ska / rock steady / dub / roots reggae 45s in town.

In addition to records, a small assortment of cassettes and art books are also sold at Wombleton. In terms of expansion, Marshall says the current plan is to expand the number of 45s by several thousand. “We’d also like to focus the selection in the store to become even more specialized, so that means less trying to please everybody, less standard catalog titles, less vinyl originating from the USA and a more organized, cohesive and interesting selection of genres/styles/artists from around the world. We want people to walk in the place and see a lot of attractive records they’ve never seen or heard of before.”

Wombleton’s interior is outfitted in a Victorian era décor with fancy vintage wallpaper and curvy wooden furniture. The record shelves are custom built and meant to resemble harpsichords. Plants and Persian rugs accent the old glass shop counter space, which houses rare albums. The walls are bare with the exception of an old mirror which Marshall thinks resembles something you’d see out of the Haunted Mansion and a shelf of pickle jars which he jokes are haunted. Marshall explains that the idea was to make Wombleton a harmonious, pleasant environment, unlike most record stores. “We looked at what other record stores were doing design-wise and consciously tried to do the opposite. We wanted to convey the notion that one was stepping back in time but in a subtle, comfortable “lived-in” manner- because shopping back in time – well, that’s a fantasy shared by lots of people who are into vintage gear.”

Every Thursday night, Wombleton hosts live music nights, featuring a variety of rotating DJs. In addition to up and coming local disc jockeys, celebrity DJs like those from Yo La Tengo have been known to pop by. “Its billed as a ‘listening party’ and we try to sign up an eclectic roster so we, our customers, and friends, can check out someone else’s record collection/musical vision. It’s not any great shakes, just a reliable time and place to socialize and survey/enjoy some music (on vinyl) you may not be acquainted with,” says Marshall.

Next time you’re in the market for a rare vinyl, pop into Wombleton Records:

At long last, international superstars The Sounds have a new album! Something To Die For was released on March 29 on SideOneDummy Records.

The Sounds made a splash at SXSW 2011, with a stellar performance at The PureVolume House, as pictured here. The Sounds’ live show is not to be missed. Often described as a New Wave, electro dance party, the band’s energy is rivaled by few. And it’s rare to see a sight such as singer Maja Ivarsson land a jumping split kick in 3 inch heels. Even Pete Townsend and David Lee Roth wear a low heel or flat shoe.

And on the eve of their album release, The Sounds signed autographs for over 1000 fans who showed up at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood for the album release party.

ChinaShopMag chatted with singer Maja Ivarsson while she was at the SideOneDummy headquarters in Hollywood on the heels of the band’s sold out show at the Avalon and completion of their Red Bull Studio session.

What are three words you would use to describe your experience at SXSW?

Maja: Pimples, dirty, and noise pollution. Basically, it’s just a dirty week, but as long as you’re prepared for it, I think it’s good. You get tour pimples cause it’s so dirty.

Walking the streets of Austin can be quite surreal during SXSW. Did you have any interesting encounters on the streets?

Maja: Walking down the street in Austin during SXSW you have to prepare that a lot of people will come up to you, they’re drunk and they just want to give you a hug and they wanna have autographs and take photos and all that which is really flattering. Our friend Bam Margera came to visit us and stayed on the bus. He is a trooper. We were out having dinner one night, it was me, Bam, and my boyfriend walking down the street at SXSW and I’ve never been stopped so many times. And it wasn’t for me: It was for Bam.

Everybody wanted to take pictures with Bam and he doesn’t turn down anyone. He’s a real trooper. Anyone who comes up to him and wants to take a picture, he always takes pictures with all his fans. I learned something from that. He told me that his friend was waiting for Samuel L. Jackson once to get an autograph, and his friend waited for 7 hours. Finally when Sam comes out and he asks for an autograph, Sam goes “No, I don’t have the time, I’m just going to take off” and he just took off. Bam remembered that, his friend told him and he still remembers that 7 years later he remembered: “Man, I hate that guy now.” So that’s something you need to remember. If somebody comes up and wants and autograph or wants to take a picture you should do it cause sometimes you never know, that person might hold that against you for the rest of your life. That was very surreal, walking down the street with Bam Margera at SXSW.

Did you have any Texan BBQ in Austin?

Maja: Yeah, for sure! I usually try to go to Stubb’s every time we go to Austin. We play shows in Austin [during the year] even though it’s not SXSW, and I think Stubb’s has really great BBQ. Unfortunately, they don’t have corn on the cob. So if anybody who works at Stubb’s who gets to see this: put that on your menu, please.

The PureVolumne House show was incredibly awesome! What was your highlight of the show?

Maja: I can’t say that I have one particular moment that I remember more than any other, but I think that SXSW in general is always a lot of fun. You just gotta roll with the punches. I think I would say the whole week in general was just a really good memory for all of us. We had a really good time. There were a lot of die hard Sounds fans at that show, in particular. That is always nice to see them come and support our band.

Something To Die For is your first release with indie label SideOneDummy. What lead you to sign with SideOneDummy?

Maja: For us, in the band, it’s always been very important to surround ourselves with people that are equally as passionate about music as we are. We got offers to sign with really big labels, but that usually means that you’re signing your life away for at least another 10 years and you never know cause it could be like one guy working at a big company and that guy might end his work or get kicked out of his work and work for another label 2 months later and then you’re stuck in this big corporate system. So for us, it was very, very easy and very natural for us to work with SideOneDummy cause it’s a great label and everybody there is passionate about music. Either they’ve been in bands themselves, or they play music themselves. For us, it’s the best thing ever. Really. I think we’re onto something really, really good together.

Being from Sweden, were you looking forward to hanging out in Hollywood for The Sounds sold-out show at the Avalon and the Hard Rock Cafe album release party meet and greet?

Maja: Since we’ve been a band, we’ve been to Los Angeles so many times, I practically live here when I have my time off. So Hollywood, especially East Hollywood, has become my home away from home. I feel really comfortable here. Avalon is such a great venue. We sold it out pretty fast and that Hard Rock Café signing was amazing. There were literally a thousand people waiting in line outside. I still have to pinch myself after so many years. I get really humble and very, very happy when I see all these fans coming up and they just want to take photos and autographs. Their support means everything to us because without our fans we wouldn’t be able to do what we’re doing right now. Definitely, Los Angeles is one of our better markets in the world, so we love it.

Maja, you sang vocals on the All Time Low track “Guts” for their forthcoming new album Dirty Work. How did the collaboration with All Time Low come to be?

Maja: All Time Low was looking for a girl singer to be part of one of their tracks on their new album. They had a couple of different girls in mind. They finally went with me, which is very flattering. I remember my manager sent me the track, cause I wanted to hear the song before I said I wanted do it, cause obviously I wanna like the song. I really liked the song so we decided to go for it.

I recorded my vocals in LA. The band was not there, I was just doing it with the producer. But I met the band in Germany, at a festival. We hung out for a little bit. And I think Mark [Hoppus] from Blink 182 has been helping that band out a lot. it’s like a family business almost.

The Sounds track “No No Song” was just featured on an episode of the new Hawaii 5-0. Have you ever been to Hawaii? Or surfed or been in an outrigger canoe like on the opening credits of the show?

Maja: No, I’ve never been to Hawaii. I know my guitarist, Felix [Rodriguez] has been there. He thought it was amazing. I’m actually planning on going there. My boyfriend is from San Diego. He’s a surfer guy/skater boy so he definitely wants to go to Hawaii as soon as possible, and so do I. But I’ve never surfed or been in a canoe.

As Hockey’s “Song Away” would tell you, they make truthful songs over eighties grooves, but their music goes further than that – more diverse, but a good start in trying to describe their unique sound.

Hockey started their musical adventure as a two-piece. Jerm Reynolds (Jeremy, but nobody calls him that) and Ben Grubin got together when the two attended college together in Redlands, California. After moving to Spokane, Washington (on a whim) in hope of finding new band mates, they soon re-located to Portland (adding drummer Anthony, and later Brian on bass). Although Hockey calls Portland home when they aren’t spreading the gospel from the west coast to the UK, the band members hail from every corner of the United States and their musical style is the sum of their disparate parts.

The guys from Hockey are fun loving, laid back friends with nomadic tendencies (too edgy to be considered hippies), and the music is a reflection of their personality. Hockey seamlessly weaves over and through genres with a powerful brand of soulful dance-rock - infusing their tracks with all sorts of heavy textural sounds and strange samples. Mostly resembling “indie” on most of their songs, singer Ben Grubin’s punchy one-liners (and great hooks) make Hockey even harder to peg. Never shy of intelligence or sharing his thoughts, Ben Grubin’s lyrics often tell witty stories of past experience, often wrenched out with his raspy (sometimes gutteral) howl – adding spices of soul into their highly infectious melodies and up-beat rhythms.

Hockey talks about what they know, where they have been and what is on their minds, which seem to be fairly simpatico across the board – one of the main reasons that Hockey’s style seems so genuine – they are musicians on a mission to have their stories heard. After the release of their “Mind Chaos” EP, Hockey headed back into the studio to cut a full-length album of the same name, scheduled for release in the first half of 2009. The chaos inside the minds of the Hockey team must run deep, as they decided to stick with the title, shedding some light on what inspires their crazy brand of “New Wave Soul.”

Hockey are constantly hitting the road taking their game to venues across the US and the UK (and beyond), check out www.myspace.com/hockey for updates on their travels and tribulations.
