Music Katie Melua: I’d Love to Kill You
September 2, 2010 - 11:04 am
If you haven’t heard of Katie Melua, you better hide that little fun fact from your British friends, as she is more than a legend in the UK. This spunky singer-songwriter got her start when she attended the Brit School for Performing Arts where she caught the eye of the prestigious Mike Batt, composer for everyone from Art Garfunkle to Vanessa Mae. Spellbound by her mesmerizing voice, Mike signed Katie to his label, Dramatico. By the age of 19, Katie’s debut, Call Off The Search, sold 1.8 million copies in just 5 months. Her follow-up, Nine Million Bicycles, went four times platinum and she instantly sprung to the status of England’s best selling female artist and Europe’s highest selling female artist.
China Shop picked the brain of this powerhouse of songwriting to see what she’s all about offstage:
Music The Spazmatics: Independently Owned and Operated
September 2, 2010 - 10:58 am
If you live in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Seattle, Austin, Chicago, Salt Lake City (the list obviously keeps going), then you’ve probably heard of the Spazmatics. Children of the 80’s or those who just can’t get enough of the music flock to see these wacky performers get nerdy onstage on any given day of the week. What many don’t know is that the Spazmatics are not just a super cool band that does a residency at certain spots your city; they are in fact, a franchise.

Featured Gallery Music Tribute to a Hollywood Icon: Slash Day
September 1, 2010 - 3:43 pm
There is no disputing the fact that Slash is legendary, iconic, renowned…(I’m stopping before this all goes to his head). He’s as part of the history of West Hollywood as the Sunset Boulevard street sign itself and as a result is this year’s Sunset Strip Music Festival official honoree. Tonight at the House of Blues, photographers and press crammed like cattle behind a velvet rope to await the arrival of the man himself to his very own tribute party. As we waited for Slash, a stream of important people began to trickle down the red carpet to occupy our time. Carpet walkers included Lemmy Kilmister, Billy Boy from Poison, Warner Drive, Cherry Bomb, Twilight’s Boo Boo Stewart, Blowing up the Moon, Dan Black, Nic Adler, Franky Perez, Acidic, Kenny Aronoff, The Shrills, Juke Kartel, Kevin Brown, Diamond Lane, David George Band and more. After much anticipation, Slash made his way out of a black SUV and through the mob of press, fully done up in true Slash style – the hat, black clothing, a t-shirt with a bikini girl standing in front of a luxury car, dark shades, etc… Speaking of shades, I laughed as several photographers tried to haggle people like Kenny Aronoff into taking off their sunglasses for a photo opp and were very unsuccessful. Most of these refusers must have shared Kenny’s reason for rockin’ their shades, which was, as he laughed and explained, “I don’t want to take my glasses off, I look like shit.”
Music Electric Zoo: Party Animals Ready Set Go
September 1, 2010 - 2:30 pm
So we here at ChinaShop don’t know what your plans are for this Labor Day weekend but if you don’t have any or even if you do, cancel them quick and head out to the Electric Zoo, New York’s electronic music festival out on Randall’s Island. There will be tons of music, interactive arts displays and plenty of eats to keep your dancin’ pants on all day.
Music The Chemical Brothers “Swoon” the Hollywood Bowl
August 30, 2010 - 5:16 pm
August 29, 2010, they came, unleashed a firestorm, and left in a flash.
It was a perfectly bombastic and electrified night at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday. The Chemical Brothers were in rare form as they took to the stage for an insanely “up for it” crowd. Not known as dynamic performers, the seminal British electronic duo actually seemed rather excited about their Bowl performance – surprising those who experienced their rather lackluster 2009 DJ set at Coachella.
Moody Mondays Moody Mondays: Katie Melua
August 30, 2010 - 11:27 am

This week, ChinaShop caught up with Katie to find out which songs take her to her “happy place.” The following are her picks this Moody Monday.

Music Sunday Night in Silver Lake: SSJ 2010
August 26, 2010 - 3:22 pm
Sunday I sun screened, loaded up my ‘concert purse,’ stocked up on carbs and headed to the Sunset Junction. As I walked through the gates, I stumbled right into a mini techno fest with DJs spinning and girls dancing on the Electro Stage. After bouncing from stage to stage, I settled in at the Bates Stage for Girls in a Coma. I’d never seen them play before but was intrigued by a mixture of things I have heard about the trio and the fact that they are named after a Smith’s song. It was a bit angry chick rock at times but I liked it overall. The singer has powerful vocals and it was refreshing to see female guitar players rock out on stage. They played Static Mind, which was a catchy tune and then chose Femme Fatale for the encore. The crowd was filled with stylish-haired hipsters, many proudly equipped with Girls in a Coma merch. After the set, a festival attendee turned to her friend and said, “Wow! That was tight.”
Music Welcome to Sunset Junction
August 26, 2010 - 2:54 pm
Saturday and Sunday, the streets of Silver Lake were filled with hipsters, carnies, corn dogs, oversized stuffed animals, rides, and the sounds of ear-pleasing bands. This year’s 30th annual Sunset Junction Street Festival recruited tens of thousands of Angelinos to brave the heat, impossible parking, and intense crowds with the mission of shoving their way into the front of one of the 5 music stages. The must see acts were: Ghostland Observatory, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Big Daddy Kane, Sam Sparro, Mayer Hawthorne, Fishbone, Shiny Toy Guns Hybrid Digital, Ohio Players, The Whisperers, Bad Brains, and Lee Scratch Perry…just to name a few.
Music Jeffree Star and Friends at Chain Reaction
August 26, 2010 - 10:14 am
Shakespeare once said “All the world is a stage.” For pop culture icon Jeffree Star that stage is a catwalk, and life should be “fierce” at all times. Nothing less will do!
Jeffree Star likes cupcakes, Hello Kitty and all things pink and sparkly, which means we have a lot in common, except I couldn’t walk nearly as well in those heels all night!
The “Lookin’ Hot And Dangerous Tour” kicked off with a sold out stop at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, California and ChinaShop was there to witness the carnage.
