Art/Design Manifest Equality Gallery – Los Angeles
March 5, 2010 - 11:42 am
On the historic night when Barack Obama was elected as the first African American President of the United States, while people flooded the streets from Harlam to Hollywood, my particular neighborhood was subdued. And it wasn’t because I dwell in a particularly Republican enclave. In fact, my local stretch of Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood is known as boys town. We’re as liberal as you can get in these parts. But along with Obama’s victory came news that Proposition 8 had effected a ban on gay marriage in California. A sobering reminder that as much reason as their was to celebrate, there was still work to be done. Read Full Story
Art/Design Gallery A Night at the Peterson Automotive Museum
February 8, 2010 - 3:10 pm
I generally have little interest in cars. My expertise in that matter stops after being able to distinguish between a SUV and hatchback, pick up truck and 4 door sedan. If given my powers of observation to rely on, after being asked what someone was driving I am apt to answer by color only, the “blue truck” or the “white car”. After that..I’m just not that connected to what one drives.
So it may shock you that I spend the day at the Peterson Automotive Museum and I fell in love with it. The museum, located on the Miracle Mile on Wilshire blvd in LA is a sweet reminder of days gone by. Being a big fan of the diorama, the Peterson really displays vehicles in settings that those cars would call home. It welcomes you to take a stroll down long gone roads in quaint towns near and far. Their collection encompasses examples of the wacky to the classic. From the outrageous to the undiscovered.
Art/Design Gallery Dr. Sketchy’s Sketch-a-thon Proves Only The Strong Will Survive
January 21, 2010 - 12:39 pm
Bob Self, a man of many hats and, most recently, host of Doctor Sketchy’s Los Angeles branch held his very first marathon. Intrepidly forsaking sleep, Bob welcomed a string of beautiful models and over sixty guests to Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra, where the twenty-six-hour event took place. Renowned painter Michael Hussar was among the attendees and created one of his famous alla prima portraits. Armed with tons of supplies, artists brought everything from watercolors and pastels to oil paint and digital tablets.
Gallery Los Angeles The Decadent Desserts of KISS MY BUNDT!
January 19, 2010 - 5:06 pm
Mmm, cake. It’s delicious, it’s moist, it’s chewy, it gives you that rush of sugar when you need a pep in your step, it massages your taste buds with flavor…it puts you in “The Mood”…
Saturday night a huge line formed outside of Kiss My Bundt Bakery as people jittered with the anticipation of sampling mouth-watering and not-so-usual bundt cake recipes, the creation of owner Chrysta Wilson, who grew up in the South where a bundt was practically a member of your family. Wilson has come a long way from the days of a curious youth in North Carolina who would experiment on her Easy Bake Oven. She is now the mastermind behind a multitude of bundt creations, which she shares in her newly launched book Kiss My Bundt: Recipes From an Award Winning Bakery. Among the typical Red Velvet Bundt, vegan treats, and delicious chocolate varieties, Kiss My Bundt Bakery offers some more eclectic flavors such as: Maple Bacon Cake with Maple Glaze (includes actual bacon bits inside and in the glazing), 7 Up Pound Cake with 7 Up Glaze, Mac’n Cheese Baby Bundts, as well as a selection of aphrodisiac-flavored bundts such as Aphrodisiac Cherry Vanilla Almond Cake, and Riesling, Apricot, and Honey Aphrodisiac Cake.
Music Chris Gore Book Signing : Filmmakers! D.I.Y. or Die Trying
December 18, 2009 - 11:45 am
ChinaShop Film curator and Patron Saint of Indie Filmmaker Counseling Chris Gore was in Las Vegas and Los Angeles recently for a signing of his latest opus, Chris Gore’s Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide. In addition to the autographing, Gore lived up to his reputation as an advice hound, doling out a dozen different ways he could think of to help the aspiring filmmakers who were there to seek out the film festivals. If they didn’t confess their secret projects, he became a sort of benevolent Torquemada, and had ways to make you talk…even if you didn’t want to.
Event Music L.A. Red Bull Soundclash: Kid Sister vs. Moving Units
December 17, 2009 - 4:13 pm
It’s probably been a while since Los Angelenos witnessed a good old-fashioned battle of the bands, arena-style and between two worthwhile opponents who’ve had years to hone their craft. But on December 16th, Red Bull Soundclash moved Kid Sister and Moving Units into their own Colosseum (read: hotel) to entertain the bloodthirsty crowd with a two-hour duel, filled with a variety of exchanged musical parries and thrusts. The weapons: guitar, bass, synth, turntables, and lots — and LOTS– of loud drums. And here’s two groups that, at first, couldn’t sound more unlike, yet still had two very common aspirations: a) get yer booty shakin’, and b)wipe the floor with the other.
Event Gallery Santa Con 09
December 16, 2009 - 12:13 pm
On Saturday, these words rang more true than ever, when hundreds of crimson-clad Angel City residents marched the streets of Downtown, joined by one common goal – maximum merriment.
Gallery Los Angeles Tourists, Traffic, Trannies & Trainwrecks: Welcome to Hollywood Blvd
November 11, 2009 - 11:25 am
The Hollywood Boulevard photo-expedition started rather uneventfully. True, I was exited to capture this stretch of LA land, as I’ve lived a few short blocks away from here for many years and H-wood holds a special place in my heart– but driving up to the Highland corner in mad Sunday traffic and parking in a mall didn’t have me especially fired up. Then, while approaching Michael Jackson’s star on the famous sidewalk, I realized it was his birthday. This plus a gorgeous Marilyn impersonator complimenting my hair put me in an appropriately dreamy state and, braving the late summer heat, I started making my way down the crowded street.
No matter what time of year, Hollywood Blvd still welcomes swarms of tourists around here, so stopping for photos can be quite a feat. Still, I was having fun swimming through the human soup, poking my lens into shop windows and talking with the locals. Like grandma’s house to us long-time Angelinos, the boulevard might smell kind of funny, but its doors are always open and the museums, masked heroes, countless souvenir joints and tattoo shops are familiar and strangely comforting. Even the hobos possess a certain charm.
Music HEALTH check
November 10, 2009 - 12:39 pm
Heavily-distorted Fender guitars with the obligatory amp feedback–Check. A layered, piercing synth sound, drenched in layers of haunting, spectral vocals and what can only be described as variations on the sound of white noise–Affirmative. Though Los Angeles’ HEALTH might bill themselves as a(nother) noise rock band, it’s a moniker that could also prove that the band is selling themselves short: instead of copy-catting today’s trends, HEALTH digs deep into the abyss of often-overlooked pioneers from the days of yore. And while they have the dexterity to harken back to the beats of D.C. pioneers Fugazi and maybe a touch of Sonic Youth, they still aren’t above embracing the dance sounds of today’s latest and greatest in dance and hip-hop, the chaotic chords of The Mars Volta, or even the 8-bit blips and beeps of your old Nintendo Entertainment System.
Urban Exploration Frolic in the Fairfax Farmer’s Market
September 16, 2009 - 10:06 am
Fall has come to LA. Sort of. While we’re trying to shake the September gloom that visits SoCal every year there are plenty of delicious benefits to be reaped. Take the Farmers’ Market on Fairfax, for instance. Whether you plan to sticking to your raw/vegan/liquid diet or aim to search and destroy an assortment of baked delights under the season’s hazy sunshine, this is the place to be. Tons of international restaurants and a maze or produce are sure to offer something you can’t live without – last week I fell victim to an incredible batch of guacamole, cherries and a large jar of caramel sauce. Mmm.Visitors can sit down for a meal or browse the isles – shiny vegetables piled high, stacks of home-made chocolate-covered everything, spices and teas are just some of the treats available. The official Farmer’s Market event takes place on Fridays and Saturdays, but the restaurants are open daily. Resistance is futile.
