Los Angeles The Ticket Angels: Saving Sanity One Parking Ticket at a Time
August 19, 2010 - 11:09 am
Parking tickets are one of the biggest pains in the butt in life. You head to an area with absolutely no place to park, you’re already running late, you circle the block over and over again and finally see a space and frantically pull in. You are so happy that you found a place to stash your car that you don’t stop to read the tiny and super confusing sign designating a street sweeping zone, half a block away. It doesn’t matter if you just got back from a great date, a stellar business meeting, or a relaxing day at the spa; when you walk back to your car and are greeted with that pesky white envelope so lovingly shoved underneath your wiper blades, your brain instantly turns to storm clouds. If you are a resident of Santa Monica and cursed with having to resort to daily street parking, you might want to consider calling upon the Ticket Angels.
Art/Design Featured Gallery GuitarTown Invades The Sunset Strip
August 13, 2010 - 1:40 pm
The Sunset Strip is sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll. It has been for as long as anyone can remember. After years and years of such wear and tear, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it might need a teensy weensy bit of tender love and care. Fortunately The Sunset Strip Business Association has its back. The committee kicked off the $5.4 million Sunset Strip Beautification Project in January 2010, giving West Hollywood a facelift with improvements such as replacing faulty traffic signals, repaving the boulevard for the first time in 75 years, planting new trees, making parking meters credit card accessible, etc… The official “re-opening” of The Strip took place on Thursday, August 12th, with the unveiling of one final touch, GuitarTown, a public art project featuring 26 ten-foot tall fiberglass Les Paul model guitar sculptures that were donated by Gibson, decorated by local artists, and scattered all over the strip.
Featured Gallery Music All Eyes on Flying Lotus: Hard Fest 2010
August 10, 2010 - 1:21 pm
I have photographed Steven Ellison, a.k.a Flying Lotus, 5 or 6 times in the past 2 years. It was during the first set of his which I photographed that I noticed Flying Lotus had certain, “tell”, as they so call it in poker. Just before the baseline is to drop through the floor, into the basement and most likely end up in the water table, he would pause as if floating Wylie Coyote style in mid air. Just hovering there above his Eve bitten clamshell which contains the soles of well worn Samiyam 8-bit beats and most likely photos of a black tee clad Thom Yorke.
Music Caspa the Dubstep Ghost
August 9, 2010 - 12:36 pm
White Men Could Jump…Now Just Dubsteps. Once upon a time in jolly ol’ England, Gary McCann was a promising basketball star. Like all stars though, it eventually ran its course and sadly burned out. But, in its place, a ghost named “Caspa” was manifest and now bounces a different beat intent on dribbling your eardrums. While listening to this poltergeist murder the crowd at HARDfest this past weekend in Los Angeles, I could see that there was definitely no one reaching for a phone to call you know who.
Review How do You Walk the Labyrinth?
August 4, 2010 - 10:01 am
Traffic, work, bosses, finances, family…there are lots of things in life that you need an escape from every now and then. Everyone has their own ingredient for recovery: yoga, a vacation, a tall glass of wine, several shots of vodka, a walk on the beach… we are all very familiar with our options here, but have you ever considered walking a labyrinth as a form of rejuvenation?
Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens is a spiritual oasis within the city limits of Los Angeles that offers a daytime retreat for people that are looking to get away from all those things you’d love to get away from. I popped in for a tour of the gardens, which are tucked behind the gates of a historic mansion dating back to the 1900’s, acting currently as a church of the movement of spiritual awareness. In a nutshell, the grounds are dedicated to meditation and when you walk outside, you’ll understand why.
Music Los Angeles Hosts M.I.A and HARD FEST / CANCELLED
July 12, 2010 - 1:23 pm
This event has been CANCELLED! See official website for information.
Originally acknowledged for her fierce fashion sense and quirky stage presence (pre-Gaga, mind you. …Just sayin’.) M.I.A. now juggles a career as a Rockstar, dotting Mother, and political influencer; constantly bringing her ideas for positive global change to the forefront. Included within Time Magazine’s 2009 list of “World’s Most Influential People,” M.I.A. returns to the stage to do what she does best, Rock out! …While conveniently popping the cherry of the first HARD FEST LA. How inappropriate was that sentence? I liked it. M.I.A.’s 2010 national stage debut will be this Saturday, July 17th at the Los Angeles State Historic Park located in Downtown LA. The event is from 4pm-12am and tickets range between $50-$70 available online and at certain retail outlets (Complete list of dates and ticket outlets at HARDFEST.com). If you’re not close to The City of Angeles or are still using that whole “recession” thing as an excuse, A.) This is why you’re still a virgin. B.) You’re in luck as HARD FEST is streaming select artists from the LA and NYC event exclusively at redbullmusicacademyradio.com.

Music The Murdering Minds of Automatic Static
June 8, 2010 - 10:46 am
Haven’t heard of Automatic Static? The trio hails from “muthaf*%in’ Sacramento California” (proclaimed more out of anger than affection) and, on this particular night, has traveled 530 miles or so just to punish the Viper Room and all the unsuspecting hipsters that showed up — and the quota this evening seems unusually high. The band churned out a particularly groove-laden set that had everyone in the crowd shakin their respective booties. Patrons found it difficult to resist their catchy hooks of “Keys to Heaven” or the pummeling riffage of “Kill ‘Em All.” A myriad of influences spring to mind, though of the good kind: Singer/songwriter Z Rokk sounds a bit like The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson; their brand of raucous rock is somewhere between the stoner sludge of Black Sabbath (how many bands wouldn’t exist without Tony Iommi?:)); there’s even a bit of the Zeppelin-esque in there, at least in slivers and bits. And if you’re into Them Crooked Vultures, I’ve little doubt you will love them : Like TCV, the emphasis is on rock and ink. Lots of tattoos, yellin, and pretty much just straightforward rock n’ roll. I caught up with A.S. singer/wongwriter Z Rokk recently after their show and talked about the band’s influences, nefarious history, and exactly how miserable life in Sacramento is.
A Few of My Favorite Things Featured A Few of My Favorite Things: Reid Speed for Los Angeles
June 7, 2010 - 2:49 pm
LA’s Reid Speed has been holding down bad-assery for female DJs since she began her career in 1996, just shy of graduating high school. Known not only for her extensive drum & bass background – she cut her teeth working at DJ Dara’s Breakbeat Science shop – but for electro, fidget and dubstep, Reid is one DJ that makes the word mashup sound good. Between running her label Play Me Records, extensive touring and her own production, LA’s leading lady found the time to share a few of her favorite local spots with us.
