Between Death From Above 1979, the Bloody Beetroots, Lightning Bolt and Green Velvet, you knew the forecast for Coachella Day Three was going to be mostly heavy with an 80% chance of mosh. One of the bands most responsible for that late afternoon deluge of noise was LA rockers HEALTH, who decimated the Mojave Tent with a 14+ song set that included hits like “Die Slow,” “USA Boys” and “Crimewave,” in addition to underground favorites like “Zoothorns” and a cover of Pictureplane’s “Goth Star.” If you’ve never seen HEALTH live, you’re missing out, though your hearing is probably more intact than mine. These guys thrash around on stage like deep water fish on the end of a long line of 50-pound test, and they don’t play their instruments as much as abuse them. (The photo gallery tells the story.) They’re currently writing material for a new record—the follow-up to 2009’s Get Color—so we caught up with bassist John Famiglietti after their Coachella set to find out more.

Gallery Music Linkin Park and The Prodigy Bridge the Gap at Staples Center
When Linkin Park released their latest album, A Thousand Suns, longtime fans had a bit of a meltdown. The diehards wanted so much to embrace its heavily electronic undertones and conceptual themes, but for many, their loyalty to the style LP helped pioneer with albums like Hybrid Theory and Meteora was just too strong. For me, a longtime electronic music fan, the change was a bold step in the right direction. So when it came time for Linkin Park to take their show on the road, a pairing with dance music kingpins The Prodigy at Staples Center in Los Angeles felt like a reinforcement of that new path.
Featured Gallery Music Groove Armada and Dirty Vegas Light Up LA’s Supperclub
Grammy weekend in LA is all about the parties, and if you’re a dance music fan, there was no hotter place to be than Om Records’ showcase at the extra-posh Supperclub for a triple bill that included LA’s own Jason Bentley, Grammy Award-winning Dirty Vegas, and first-time Grammy nominees Groove Armada. Long recognized as two of electronic music’s most well-respected artists, Groove Armada and Dirty Vegas turned out flawless sets that electrified the crowd of industry execs and well-to-do Hollywood scenesters. “A different sort of crowd to what we’re used to,” said Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay, “but they gave it their all!”
Featured Gallery Music LA Celebrates Ozomatli’s Quinceañera
On Saturday night, as Los Angeles was getting pummeled with a third straight day of record rainfall, one of the city’s most beloved groups was warming up Club Nokia with good vibes, good music and a thousand of their closest friends. Ozomatli celebrated their 15th musical year by throwing a quinceañera party that featured special appearances by the USC Trojan Marching Band and the Crenshaw High School Elite Gospel Choir, as well as past Ozo members like Cut Chemist, Chali 2na, Kid.W.I.K. and Jabu.
“For a lot of us, if you grew up in LA you’ve been to a quinceañera,” says saxophonist and vocalist Ulises Bella before the show, perhaps recalling some not-so-fond memories. “But we’re gonna make it a good one this year.”
Event Gallery The Costumes of WeHo’s 23rd Halloween Carnival
In LA, you get quite a few options at Halloween-time, ranging from low key to BA-BLAM. There are the neighborhood dives with drink specials and scary movies on the telly. There are the swanky clubs, the “balls”, the costume parties in the hills. There is the Hollywood Forever cemetery’s Dia de Los Muertos festivities, the spoooky Griffith Park hay rides, and the haunted houses, too. All this is well and good, but if you want to catch some serious Halloween spirit, the annual West Hollywod Carnaval the the ultimate in fun.
Music INNERPARTYSYSTEM Play the Music Box
INNERPARTYSYSTEM played the Henry Fonda Music Box in Hollywood Tuesday night supporting Does It Offend You Yeah? and Kele. When I entered the packed room they were already in possession of the stage like they had always been there, making it there own. The sound enveloped the room like a lovers embrace. Drawing the eager crowd forward into the synchronized light show. Only this lover wasn’t looking you in the eye, cooing he loves you. This lover held you in a passionate embrace, timing his motions with yours, unapologetically romancing you into submission. This live show left you hot and bothered, somewhat satisfied but yet wanting more.
