Music Electric Zoo: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

September 8, 2011 - 7:44 am

It has been ten years since Daft Punk released Discovery, an album that many highlight as being a key player in pushing electronic music into the mainstream. Now, the demand for electronic music is greater than ever. Electric Zoo, the premier electronic music festival now in its third year, invaded New York this past weekend looking to meet that demand. By addressing several issues from the record turnout last year and upping the length of the festival from two to three days, Electric Zoo seemed to be living up to the symbolic phrasing introduced by the iconic Daft Punk ten years prior, to be: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. At the end of the weekend, approximately 85,000 people passed through the concert gates to take part in one of the largest electronic music festivals to ever take place on the east coast.

Kid Sister at Red Bull Studios 2011

“Uhh, it’s Young Josh a.k.a DJ Boyfriend now,” sayeth the raven haired rapper looking down at my notes rested on the arm of the meringue sofa inside Red Bull Recording Studio in Santa Monica California. She is referring of course to her brother of Flosstradamus fame. “J2K is out.”

Thus begins my education by Chicago’s Kid Sister on what not to say and who not to talk to waitresses about…

Kid Sister

Melisa Young, aka Kid Sister, calls herself a nerd and I believe her. She called it a night relatively early after her show at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, loves talking about her family and won’t do a recording session unless she is alone and can concentrate. Plus, she, like my mother, uses the word, “snarkiest.” But don’t get her wrong, the girl knows how to have a good time. She can juke with the best of them, has been known to get tattoos on the fly with Paul Wall and always has a smile on.

For the tens of thousands of music heads who descend on Austin, TX each March for the SXSW music conference, the accompanying day parties have grown to equal the official night time showcases. And no place is this more true than this year’s Carniville—three days of music and mayhem presented by Mad Decent, Jelly NYC and IHeartComix. With headline acts Major Lazer, The Walkmen and Diplo, plus almost 40 other artists, rides, games…oh, and free booze, this is one fiesta not to be missed. Chinashop will be there and we asked IHeartComix head Franki Chan to get us psyched. Read the full story

Event Music L.A. Red Bull Soundclash: Kid Sister vs. Moving Units

December 17, 2009 - 4:13 pm

SOUNDCLASH 1

It’s probably been a while since Los Angelenos witnessed a good old-fashioned battle of the bands, arena-style and between two worthwhile opponents who’ve had years to hone their craft. But on December 16th, Red Bull Soundclash moved Kid Sister and Moving Units into their own Colosseum (read: hotel) to entertain the bloodthirsty crowd with a two-hour duel, filled with a variety of exchanged musical parries and thrusts. The weapons: guitar, bass, synth, turntables, and lots — and LOTS– of loud drums. And here’s two groups that, at first, couldn’t sound more unlike, yet still had two very common aspirations: a) get yer booty shakin’, and b) wipe the floor with the other.

Kid Sister - Ultraviolet

If you haven’t been eagerly anticipating the release of Kid Sister’s debut album, Ultraviolet, you may want to come out from under that rock, because that’s exactly what the album does—it rocks. Melisa Young (AKA Kid Sister), girlfriend to famed DJ A-Trak, friend of Kanye West (who raps on the song “Pro Nails”) and sister of J2K of electronic act Flosstradamus, is the well-connected face and voice behind the record. But now, two years after work on Ultraviolet—and major hype about Kid Sister as a female MC—began, Young emerges a little older, a little wiser and ready for center stage. Watching her perform live at LA’s Echoplex on Saturday night, it’s clear that her success isn’t all connections; she brings plenty of talent and charisma to the table as well.
