Marina (& the dimonds)

Hello! Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Mine was wonderful and I’m actually writing to you today from good old London. Woke up this morning to an email from my (awesome) eldest brother with the subject: “I Made You a Mixtape – RUN IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC MUSIC” (an on-going joke with us about music that gets you amped up). If that, Ribena, a Bacon Butty and kickin’ it with one of my favorite people in the world doesn’t make for an excellent start to the weekend, well, I just don’t know what does.

Marina & The Diamonds’ “Obsessions,” “I’m Not a Robot” and “Mowgli’s Road” (all off The Family Jewels, officially released February 22, 2010) got a lot of play Summer 2009, but to be quite frank, I honestly haven’t given her much thought since then. So I was a bit surprised to find Christopher Dexter Greenspan (aka OOOoOOO… which reminds me of the (awesome) song by Oberhofer “oOOOoOOOo” recently remixed “Obsessions.” That being said, I’m really effing glad he did because he reminded me how much I love Marina & The Diamonds. His take is decidedly more synth heavy and has a gorgeous operatic feel; totally loving it.

White Lies

Hi!  The wonderful day of the week that is Friday is upon us once again and I’m back with my utterly magical music update to make it that much better!

The other day I was perusing through my iTunes and came across The White Lies; I’d forgotten how much I absolutely love them. Their first album “To Lose My Life” is ludicrously good and it’s been a minute since I’ve heard anything new from them and was I wondering when they were going to release some new material. The greatness that is 2010 strikes yet again and what do I come across this week? The video for their new single, “Bigger Than Us”. Check it out Here, it’s an absolute banger of a track.

Music CMJ At Red Bull Space NYC

October 28, 2010 - 11:02 am

Cut Chemist at Red Bull Space CMJ party 2010

So last week was the CMJ Music Marathon (more commonly known as just “CMJ”) here in the NYSheezy. Established in 1980, CMJ (“College Music Journal”) is an annual, week long music festival held in various venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn for selected artists and bands to, essentially showcase their material for industry people, particular those with a focus in the college markets.

The Red Bull Space was the talk of the town on Thursday night with the invite only Cut Chemist album release party for Sound of the Police with special guests DJ Spinna, Telephoned and Jasmine Solano. Cut Chemist was solid and did not disappoint although I have to say, Jasmine Solano was the highlight for me personally. She’s remarkably talented; has such a great energy on stage; plus the fact that she hosts a monthly party called “Electric Punanny” is rather punchy (and awesome).

Music Friday’s Feeling Fine Music Mail 10/8

One of the great things about music, and why I love it so much, is that it affects people in ways that no other medium really can. It has this incredibly ability to touch every emotion inside a person – love, laughter, madness, heartbreak, joy… what have you – sometimes hitting each and every one of those over the course of a single song. It’s said that the sense of smell is the most powerful sense in a person, the one that conjures up emotion and memory most vividly; however I disagree. I think it’s hearing. I can listen to a song and be taken right back to a memory of / with it like it happened only yesterday, even if that memory is almost as old as I am.

With the above in mind, I’m brought to the first bit of news this week: after the passing of his close friend, Sally Menke (Quentin Tarantino’s longtime editor), RZA along with James Black, Kobra Khan and Justin Nokuza have released “Gone” in her honor.

Contributors ChinaShop Welcomes Amanda Boyd

September 20, 2010 - 10:58 am

Amanda Boyd

ChinaShop would like to welcome its newest contributor Amanda Boyd to the team!  Despite the (frequent) misconception that’s she English, Amanda Boyd was indeed, to quote The Boss, “born in the USA” – New Jersey, in fact. Her love of music comes from her efforts to recover from the childhood trauma of being denied a pet llama; she was given a pair of headphones and a complete Beatles collection. It worked. She currently works for Red Bull and resides in the hipster capital of the world, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York.

Music Hipster Haven: The People of Sunset Junction

August 25, 2010 - 4:44 pm

Sunset Junction

If you managed to take your eyes off of the music stages, carnie games, explosion of food trucks, and vendors, you couldn’t help but miss the hipster haven that was Sunset Junction 2010.  Saturday and Sunday at the Sunset Junction Street Fair, a fashion show took place, and the runway models were the Los Angeles hipsters.  I am by no means a hipster, I’m not cool enough to keep that up with trends, but walking around the festival I was taking notes (literally for my article but also for my next shopping trip).  I’ve seen hipsters before and been in many hipster hangout areas, but I don’t think I can say I’ve ever been in an area so saturated with them.  By pure observation and a few crazy conversations on the patios of bars, I learned all about what is currently trendy, what is over the top, and what I definitely would not be able to pull off.

interview Q and A With Manchester’s Delphic

June 24, 2010 - 10:42 am

Delphic

Thursday night, Manchester’s own Delphic took the outdoor stage at Dangerbird Records to bestow the crowd below with the urge to dance.  After a set perfectly infused with a wreath of synth, guitar, vocals, and drums, the boys headed backstage to relax, while coyly avoiding the crowd gathered around the television that was showing the last quarter of the Lakers game.  It’s OK guys, we all know that “football” is the thing in the UK and doing an interview for China Shop over watching Kobe Bryant was a good enough excuse for me.
