Film Fridays Geek A New Look At Green Lantern’s World, Attack the Block’s New Trailer, and The Boycott Against Akira Grows

Ryan's Jolly Green Giant

The new extended TV spot for Green Lantern is out, taking us deeper into the world of Oa and Kilowog…honestly I wasn’t too sure about veteran James Bond director Martin Campbell handling this one (guess you can’t have Nolan or Arronofsky for every comic book film) but the trailer has me pretty sold.

Meanwhile Star Trek veteran George Takei lashes out against the whitewashing of Japanimation masterpiece Akira in a series of tweets…“Akira epic fail–all actors up for Kaneda & Tetsuo are white? Sign & RT the petition…”  He ain’t the only one pissed off about it, as the petition’s been live on Facebook for months now.

Film The 5 Must-see Movies of 2K11

January 5, 2011 - 9:28 am

Green Lantern

On average, there are seven new movies released in cinemas every week, that’s roughly 400 a year and clearly nobody has the time (or money) to watch them all. As 2011 dawns and a whole bunch of new cinematic endeavours vie for your attention, we’ve whittled down the list to the real essentials for your viewing pleasure…

127 Hours

A director who has rarely steered us wrong throughout his illustrious career, Danny Boyle follows up the Oscar-baiting Slumdog Millionaire with this based-on-true-life tale. James Franco stars as Aron Ralston, an extreme sports nut who, in 2003, fell into a canyon in the Utah desert and found himself trapped under a boulder for the titular time period. Quite literally caught between a rock and a hard place, he was forced to choose between a slow death or hacking his own arm off. With a helmer and a star both at the top of their game and a compelling premise like this, we can’t think of a better way to kick off the cinematic year… Released January 7.

Comic Books Green Lantern, Harry Potter, and Zack Snyder’s Sucker-Punch Vie for Audience Love: Comic-Con 2010

Reynolds as Lantern: It may work out after all

The only other film really matching Tron 2 as far as hype is, of course, Green Lantern.  And yeah, maybe that new Harry Potter film, which literally sent the girl sitting next to me into orgasmic spasms, clutching herself each time a new trailer scene popped up. And what better place to hold panel conferences for such overly-anticipated films than Magical Hall H, next to which people are known to camp out all night or at least wait in line for a good 4 hours to check out maybe 2 minutes of footage, only to get rejected when you’re about 50 yards from the door? Green Lantern is being helmed by Mask of Zorro/new James Bond director Martin Campbell, and judging by the footage, looks every bit as f&%ing rad as the crowd was hoping it would be, despite Campbell’s insistence that what was being shown was mostly rough and early FX.
