Music DVD: ‘The Heart Is A Drum Machine’ Asks The BIG Questions About Music

March 29, 2010 - 10:17 am

“What is music?” is a question that seems to be on the mind (or meme) of a lot of people lately. Last year’s best selling book This Is You Brain On Music took a scientific shot at explaining the phenomenon of rhythm, tone and timbre while indie documentary The Heart Is A Drum Machine takes a far more anecdotal approach to the question. In fact, anecdotal is what defines this film (released on DVD last week), which culls together 70-plus minutes of interview footage with an eclectic assortment of music practitioners and enthusiasts that range from Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist John Frusciante and actress-turned-rocker Julliette Lewis to comedy team Tim and Eric and scientist Ann Druyan.

Film The White Stripes Unveil “Under Bright White Northern Lights” Film In Vintage Style

March 10, 2010 - 5:03 pm

white stripes

You can bet Jack White doesn’t like music blogs. It wouldn’t be surprising if the proudly retro guitarist-vocalist of The White Stripes doesn’t dig on YouTube either. So it would probably please him to no end that when he and partner Meg White played a series of off-the-cuff public shows in Canada (a bowling alley is Saskatoon, a YMCA in Toronto, a city bus in Winnipeg) during the band’s 2007 tour, this sort of obvious blog fodder flew under the radar of all but the most obsessive web citizens. Film Anvil! The Story of Anvil

March 6, 2010 - 11:34 am

“Anvil! The Story of Anvil”, was awarded the “Best Documentary” category at this year’s Independent Spirit Awards, which was held last night (Friday, March 5) at LA Live’s panoramic event deck in downtown Los Angeles. ANVIL also performed twice during the ceremony, which aired live and uncut on IFC. Below is a review of the film by Chris Gore. It’s good to see the Canadians having such a bang on year…first the olympics and now this! Rock on dear readers……rock on!

Rush is an epic band for the ages.  Rush is also Canada’s pride and their best-known musical act.  Rush has had hit albums for decades.  Rush can fill stadiums on tour.  Rush has universal appeal having been referenced in recent films such as Adventures of Power, Fanboys and I Love You, Man.  Unfortunately, Anvil is not Rush.

Anvil is also from Canada and has been around for decades, but they are not widely known outside their small fan-base and they certainly can’t fill stadiums. Heck, they can barely fill a living room.  Despite the fact that you’ve probably never heard of the metal sensation from the Great White North, Anvil is well-respected by members of other metal bands.  In fact, when Lars Ulrich of Metallica is asked about bands that have been together the longest there are only two that come to mind, The Rolling Stones and Anvil.

Film Hey Kids– It’s the ANTICHRIST!

November 2, 2009 - 4:16 pm

antibutt

Critics have called it shocking, horrific, repulsive, and pretentious; Roger Ebert claimed that Von Trier “has reached me and shaken me,”; others deemed it “the most shocking film in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.”  So is Antichrist really deserving of all the controversy heaped upon it? (Is any film, really?) While it may be a bit overhyped, the last 45 minutes or so of the film easily rival the visceral gore of most contemporary torture-porn horror films. You know how certain movies get the ‘unrated’ aka NC-17 card, and you leave shaking your head, cursing the retarded logic of the MPAA? I’m surprised this one even made it to a theater: Genital mutilation, hardcore sex shots, leg impalement, Willem Dafoe’s ass, and a rather prescient fox who screeches: “CHAOS REIGNS!”
