Gallery Music HARD Haunted Mansion – The Biggest Halloween Party Not on Halloween (Part 2)

November 1, 2011 - 10:46 am

Day Two of the HARD Haunted Mansion continued with the tradition of showcasing several breakthrough acts which are not as frequent in America. Goose, performing in America for only the second time, got the Main stage warmed up as people began trickling in from an exhausting day prior. The Harder Stage included a ménage à trios of sorts as Jackmaster, who rarely makes his way to America, played a set heavy on funky and UK-garage tunes which seem to be more popular in Europe than here, judging by the disappointing turnout. The Magician, formerly of Aeroplane, played one of the most surprising sets of the weekend. There’s something about disco that seems to make even the most shy of dancers, attempt to recreate the choreography they saw in LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” video. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, or T.E.E.D., seemed a surprising act to book, but quickly rounded out the threesome of stellar performances on the Harder stage with his live instrumentation and vocals.

Gallery Music The Emperor of Dubstep: Nero

August 11, 2011 - 10:24 am

Dubstep’s latest poster child, Nero, is composed of one part Daniel Stephens and one part Joe Ray. The innovative duo came to light after a string of big name remixes for the likes of Deadmau5, N.E.R.D. and La Roux, which they followed up with a 2004 EP titled “Requiem.” Currently dominating the worldwide festival circuit, Stephens and Ray are on a mission to apply their punchy beats and euphoric sounds towards boosting the dubstep genre one notch higher.

The guys arrived in LA Saturday afternoon to play to thousands at HARD Summer Music Festival. Following a 4-hour trek through immigration, Stephens and Ray arrived on the festival grounds. “The airport was just fucked today. I don’t know what was going on,” joked Stephens. After what he referred to as a “sucky start” to the day, Stephens took a seat in his trailer to discuss everything from clubbing in London to Nero’s latest album.

Featured Gallery Music All Eyes on Flying Lotus: Hard Fest 2010

August 10, 2010 - 1:21 pm

I have photographed Steven Ellison, a.k.a Flying Lotus, 5 or 6 times in the past 2 years.  It was during the first set of his which I photographed that I noticed Flying Lotus had certain, “tell”, as they so call it in poker. Just before the baseline is to drop through the floor, into the basement and most likely end up in the water table, he would pause as if floating Wylie Coyote style in mid air. Just hovering there above his Eve bitten clamshell which contains the soles of well worn Samiyam 8-bit beats and most likely photos of a black tee clad Thom Yorke.

Music Caspa the Dubstep Ghost

August 9, 2010 - 12:36 pm

Caspa

White Men Could Jump…Now Just Dubsteps. Once upon a time in jolly ol’ England, Gary McCann was a promising basketball star. Like all stars though, it eventually ran its course and sadly burned out. But, in its place, a ghost named “Caspa” was manifest and now bounces a different beat intent on dribbling your eardrums. While listening to this poltergeist murder the crowd at HARDfest this past weekend in Los Angeles, I could see that there was definitely no one reaching for a phone to call you know who.

Music KODE 9: On a Trip Way Back

May 17, 2010 - 9:54 am

Kode 9 in the shade

Kode 9 is a Glasgow-born DJ working out of London– which means if you’re searching for an artist with his finger on the pulse of the UK music/dance scene, look no further. On Red Bull Music Academy Radio check out his playlist, where he selects from a series of favorite inspirations. There’s a subtle ambiance to his mixes, which may conjure the imagery of an Antonioni or Fellini movie, or any rainy night from the celluloid frame of film-noir. It’s clearly where Kode owes his allegiance; just listen to tracks like ’9 samurai’, a nod to Kurosawa’s films. A recognized master of dubstep, Kode 9 drew most of his influence from early jungle when it first got big in the UK. In addition to his years of hard work behind the turntables, he’s got a PhD from the University of Warwick in philosophy and lectures regularly at University on the subject of media production. For a closer look at the mastermind behind the music, check it out here:

Music Warming Up For Coachella – DJ Sets By Coachella Performers 2010

April 12, 2010 - 9:58 am

Coachella might be known as one of the world’s finest rock festivals, but since it’s inception all the way back in 1999, the event’s promoters put as much focus on LA rave culture as they did catering to the alternative nation (now called the indie rock masses). From Daft Punk to Kraftwerk, many of Coachella’s greatest moments over the years have come from electronic music titans. Here’s a collection of sets from artists playing this year’s festival. The perfect collection of beats to get you warmed up for the desert.
