A few years back, a Brooklyn artist who goes by the moniker Molly Crabapple, decided art school was not cool and dropped out. And lucky for us she did. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article and dammit I wouldn’t have had the chance to shoot Samion, le nude muse for this installment of the Los Angeles chapter’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. Fittingly, this kickoff for a new year of the bi-monthly pop-up figure-drawing cabaret for artists and art lovers was held at the Titmouse Inc. animation compound in Hollywood, home to all things awesome and strange.

Art Artstar: Paige Pumphrey

Paige Pumphrey is an artist based in New York City.

You seem very influenced by scenes like roller derby, burlesque, and rockabilly. How does subculture influence your art?

Paige: Growing up in the suburbs of Maryland in that dark time before the internet, I desperately wanted to be cool. I’ve always skipped around subcultures dipping my toe in various scenes all through adolescence in an attempt to find myself. But I’ve always been first and foremost a big ol’ nerd with a wicked case of OCD when it comes to my obsessions, so I always treated each different subculture that I monkey-barred to and from as almost like a costume of different characters I was trying to be.

Art Featured Gallery Plastic Fantastic: DesignerCon 2011

gToy designers, artists, and collectors kicked off the holiday season by heading to DesignerCon 2011. With over 100 booths and giveaways, attendees had everything from plushie toilet paper rolls to monster lollipops to drool over. Designers such as Baby Tattoo, Loyal Subjects, Frankenfactory, MIXO, Pretty in Plastic, SpankyStokes, Squid Kids, DKI, Super 7, Artransmitte, ESC Toys, iCovers4u, JazzyDan, Blacklist Studios, and Fugitive Toys manned tables full of unusual goodies. Fans lined up as doors to the public opened around 10am for the chance to nab one of the many 2011 DCon exclusives. Art enthusiasts tried their hand at sketching live anime models while raffle winners engaged in ferocious games of Rock-Paper-Scissors for a chance to walk away with a coveted souvenir.

Art Featured Gallery Molly Crabapple Is My New Hero

Molly Crabapple is my new hero. When I emailed her to set up some time for me to meet her and watch her in action, she replied, “I’m pretty much ALWAYS working.” It’s true. You’d need to hire an assistant just to keep up with this girl. With this much success at age 27, its hard not to wonder how she got to this point.
