Sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t stay in Vegas. Just ask DJ and producer Dani Deahl. One night, while DJing at the Artisan Hotel’s afterhours, she was chatting with a friend in the booth between mixes when she heard her effects being tweaked out. Heavily. When she turned around, she noticed a familiar face manhandling her mixer: Diplo. They chatted for a bit, and true to form, Diplo snapped a pic of the two of them. The next day, Deahl received an email with the picture attached. The subject line: diplo hates you.

Gallery Music Mayhem at The Mid with Cut Chemist and Quantic
In the nine months that The Mid has been open in Chicago’s West Loop, this club/venue has welcomed a truly random but top shelf array of DJs and live acts. The spot’s Friday night series, Mayhem at The Mid, has especially seen some influential talent step to the stage, including Mad Decent chief Diplo, pioneering DJ Afrika Bambaataa, and UK dub steppers Skream and Benga. There’s no reoccurring genre heard here; just acts that can draw a crowd (often capacity) with their signature styles.
Music Electric Zoo: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
It has been ten years since Daft Punk released Discovery, an album that many highlight as being a key player in pushing electronic music into the mainstream. Now, the demand for electronic music is greater than ever. Electric Zoo, the premier electronic music festival now in its third year, invaded New York this past weekend looking to meet that demand. By addressing several issues from the record turnout last year and upping the length of the festival from two to three days, Electric Zoo seemed to be living up to the symbolic phrasing introduced by the iconic Daft Punk ten years prior, to be: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. At the end of the weekend, approximately 85,000 people passed through the concert gates to take part in one of the largest electronic music festivals to ever take place on the east coast.
Music Into the Darkness: Mansions On The Moon
Is this June gloom getting you down? Did you have your coffee yet? Have you heard the new Mansions on the Moon? Well, I can’t change the weather and I ain’t getting you coffee, but what I can and will do is serve you up a dose of melancholy magic courtesy of Mansions on the Moon.
This starbound group, founded a little over a year ago, have since co-signed with Pharell, and collaborated with Diplo, Mac Miller and Chiddy Bang’s Xaphoon Jones to name a few.
And now Mansions On The Moon have released “Darkness” off their upcoming debut Lightyears.
So, brew yourself a cup, kick up your feet and soak up the “Darkness.” Oh, and check out the fellas in action, writing and recording this catchy tune at Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica.
Music Raver Chic At The Electric Zoo
If you thought raver style went out with the 90’s, you are wrong. It still exists and is going strong, as exhibited this weekend at New York’s Electric Zoo. There was a strong showing of the favorites– tons of neon, beaded bracelets and so, so much glitter. But it seems 2010’s ravers are taking it to the next level by mixing current trends with old electro staples.
Music Welcome To The Electric Zoo
There was music, there was food, there was art and revelry. All the makings for a fabulous music festival came together and delivered. With 4 different stages, each boasting their own lineup, Randalls Island park isnt as big as some of the other large festivals I’ve attended (Austin City Limits, cough, cough) so you could easily dart from one stage to another and catch all the acts. And speaking of the acts, wow, what a lineup.
Music Electric Zoo: Party Animals Ready Set Go
So we here at ChinaShop don’t know what your plans are for this Labor Day weekend but if you don’t have any or even if you do, cancel them quick and head out to the Electric Zoo, New York’s electronic music festival out on Randall’s Island. There will be tons of music, interactive arts displays and plenty of eats to keep your dancin’ pants on all day.
Music Major Lazer: Guns Don’t kill people, Ladders Do
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Standard for portable ladders contains specific requirements designed to ensure worker safety when using portable ladders. #1926.1053(b)(4) States: Ladders shall be used only for the purpose for which they were designed. Shit! I swear, if any of you tell Skerrit Bwoy from Major Lazer that OSHA may frown upon his leaping through the air from said ladder and into the crotch area of his lady friend, I will turn this car around and no one will be getting a drop of MDMA. Not even you DJ Diplo.
