Film Fridays David Lynch’s Masterpiece, 25 Years Later: Ranting and Fun Facts in a Tribute to ‘Blue Velvet’

September 23, 2011 - 11:16 am

This week marks the official 25th anniversary of what many believe to be David Lynch’s cinematic magnum opus — yes, even more than Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive — so being as there’s no other real movie news today, grab your oxygen tank and crank up the Roy Orbison. It’s time to hit the f*ckin road back in time and celebrate what is both one of the most hated and beloved movies in the entire history of cinema.

Film Fridays David Lynch’s Parisian Nightclub, Batman Porn, and A Tribute to Lightsabers (and Flock of Seagulls)

September 2, 2011 - 8:18 am

I guess all that’s missing is the celebrated cast of characters — The Log Lady, Agent Dale Cooper, Frank Booth — but the renowned director’s Parisian nightclub may be the next closest thing to hanging out in Lynch’s dreams, especially since it’s named and modeled after Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive. Warning: That’ll be 1000 francs, please. Read the full story

Film Music David Lynch Embraces Analog, Makes Music with Underworld and Others

March 1, 2011 - 10:58 am

Smoking and Sullen

Guess it was only a matter of time before the brain behind oxygen-sniffing sociopath Frank Booth, painting with ants, and professional furniture crafting made some (more) music. David Lynch has released a deluxe vinyl edition of both Good Day Today and I Know, new albums which feature both original tracks as well as remixes by Underworld, Sasha, Jon Hopkins, and others. And the video is one of the strangest and most haunting you’ll ever see.

Straying from the subwoofers and flickering halogen bulbs of his soundtracks, Lynch seems to have taken a cue from longtime accomplice/composer Angelo Badalamenti and actually gone melodic on us. The video is as trippy as the song, and Lynch fans wouldn’t expect anything less.

Music Nicole Atkins “Kickstarts” Mondo Amore

February 28, 2011 - 9:32 am

Mondo Amore

It’s been three years since her 2007 debut, “Neptune City,” and Nicole Atkins couldn’t be more excited about her February 8th release of “Mondo Amore.” Atkins and her band, which she refers to as The Black Sea, are currently on the road with Cotton Jones in support of the new disc.

The tour was funded in a far from typical way. After posting a humorous video showing the harsh realities of her label lacking an adequate touring budget, Atkins politely asked fans to chip in what they could in order to get her out on the road. Utilizing the services of Kickstarter.com, people that pledged received anything from ‘good karma’ to a band-initiated ‘séance to contact a deceased loved one, Elvis, or whoever you want.’

Atkins goes into more detail in the following interview with ChinaShop:

Art/Design Gallery Twin Peaks Celebrates 20th Anniversary at Clifton’s

February 25, 2011 - 11:35 am

This month, Twin Peaks is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Conceived and created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, the haunting TV series ran its fleeting course in the early nineties, suffering tremendous interferences at the hands of ratings-hungry studio execs. Despite its untimely conclusion, Twin Peaks received critical acclaim and spawned a devoted cult following. The plot unfolded around the shocking murder of a prom queen in a fictional Washington town, and the arrival of Seattle FBI agent, Dale Cooper, sent to solve the mystery. The eccentricities and shady undercurrents of small-town life are the heart of the show, though. Coffee, pie, doughnuts, trees and owls – daily staples of Twin Peaks life – became the show’s iconic motifs, and were prominently featured in the artwork of In the Trees – an art event commemorating the series.

Film Filmmakers New Breed: Jennifer Lynch

July 6, 2009 - 10:31 am

Prepare to meet a new breed of filmmakers – artists who defy hype and cliché.  These bold new voices are unleashing their movies to audiences who hunger for something beyond the fast-food films they’ve been served at the multiplex. These filmmakers not only make their own rules, they break them as well.

Jennifer Lynch would make great conversation if she just described what it’s like to watch her father cook.  That’s because her dad is legendary filmmaker David Lynch.  She speaks as fondly about her father as she does about her passion for film. Jennifer has a film career of her own having directed her first feature at the age of 22.  Boxing Helena came out in 1993 clouded by a storm of controversy.  The film not only caused a stir because of the disturbing story about a man who keeps a limbless woman in a box, but a lawsuit that dragged on for years and almost derailed her career.
