Gallery Music Eye to Eye with Butch Walker

September 7, 2011 - 7:45 am

Butch Walker was supposed to be one of the headlining artists at this year’s Sunset Junction Music Fest but due to some pesky street fines and fine print on contracts, the festival was cancelled. That didn’t stop Butch and his army of Black Widows from performing, however. “We were all dressed up and nowhere to go when they canned it,” joked Butch. The guys made the best of it, with plan B being a 30-minute set in the courtyard of their new label, Dangerbird Records. The show consisted of the band performing the entire track list off of the latest and greatest Butch Walker and the Black Widows release, The Spade. A giant crowd packed into the outdoor courtyard and even Justin Kirk (Andy Botwin on Weeds) came out for the soiree.

Prior to the performance, Butch sat down with ChinaShop to discuss the new album, embarrassing tattoos, and his distaste for synthesizer music.

Featured Music Internet Killed The Video Star : Intervew with The Limousines

April 8, 2011 - 10:09 am

The Limousines

Whether or not we choose to admit it, we’ve all seen at least one episode of “Jersey Shore.” If you tuned into this season’s trashy East-side debauchery, chances are you’ve heard a song from San Jose’s newest buzz band, The Limousines. Having their songs placed on popular reality shows isn’t all that this dynamic duo, composed of Giovanni and Eric, has accomplished. The band made YouTube history with their zombie-ridden video “Internet Killed The Video Star”. Shortly after, they were snatched up by Dangerbird Records, a career milestone that they guys are still digesting.

Eric and Gio sat down with ChinaShop to explain their unique tale of creating music together before even having met one another in person. They also discuss Beetlejuice themed house parties, being labeled as ‘Gayrock’, and their secret desires to musically seduce Harrison Ford.

interview Fitz (and The Tantrums) Talks About His Organ

June 28, 2010 - 3:38 pm

Fitz and the Tantrums @ Spaceland L.A.

Fitz & The Tantrums have such an enchanting story…where ex-lovers become sources of inspiration, living rooms turn into cutting-edge recording studios, and tattoo artists become heroes.  I got to hear it first-hand on Thursday as I sat in the hallway of the Dangerbird Records headquarters with Fitz himself for a quick interview before he had to run off to take the stage at Silver Lake’s “Hipster Haven” aka Spaceland.  It was a delightful little interview.  We were offered ice cream mid-conversation and at one point Fitz was even asked to serve as an interim security guard in the absence of the guest list girl.

interview Q and A With Manchester’s Delphic

June 24, 2010 - 10:42 am

Delphic

Thursday night, Manchester’s own Delphic took the outdoor stage at Dangerbird Records to bestow the crowd below with the urge to dance.  After a set perfectly infused with a wreath of synth, guitar, vocals, and drums, the boys headed backstage to relax, while coyly avoiding the crowd gathered around the television that was showing the last quarter of the Lakers game.  It’s OK guys, we all know that “football” is the thing in the UK and doing an interview for China Shop over watching Kobe Bryant was a good enough excuse for me.

Featured Gallery Music Dangerbird Records Knows How to Party

June 23, 2010 - 4:16 pm

Delphic, Jon Fratelli, Fresh Fries, an open bar, and ice cream…what more could you ask to be included in one evening?  This menagerie of amusement was hosted by Dangerbird Records and JBL at the Dangerbird headquarters on Thursday.  The party turnout was superb, especially given the fact that the NBA finals were on, with the Lakers fighting tooth-and-nail for the title.  Dangerbird was kind enough to play the friendly host card and provide outdoor television screens for those internally conflicted between the bands on stage and the purple and yellow on screen.

Music Bad Veins Break it Down

July 20, 2009 - 3:25 pm

Bad Veins

Benjamin Davis and Sebastien Schultz of Bad Veins have some very exciting times ahead of them.  The orchestral-meets-indie pop duo has a self-titled debut album, coming out on July 21, with the radiant Gold and Warm slated to be the first single.  Not only are they armed with a well produced album, they also have the support of Dangerbird Records, who has pushed the careers of bands such as Silversun Pickups.  Currently on tour across the entire United States, with dates along the way in Canada as well, Bad Veins are fully ready to embark upon an intense promotional journey to bring their music to the public.

I caught the show on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Echo in Silverlake, CA which was part of a benefit for the Pablove Foundation, supporting the fight against childhood cancer.  They played a captivating show despite rolling into town a few days before without most of their own gear and having to borrow bits and pieces from friends and other bands.  The Echo was packed and the crowd was definitely giving the band some affection.
