Between Death From Above 1979, the Bloody Beetroots, Lightning Bolt and Green Velvet, you knew the forecast for Coachella Day Three was going to be mostly heavy with an 80% chance of mosh. One of the bands most responsible for that late afternoon deluge of noise was LA rockers HEALTH, who decimated the Mojave Tent with a 14+ song set that included hits like “Die Slow,” “USA Boys” and “Crimewave,” in addition to underground favorites like “Zoothorns” and a cover of Pictureplane’s “Goth Star.” If you’ve never seen HEALTH live, you’re missing out, though your hearing is probably more intact than mine. These guys thrash around on stage like deep water fish on the end of a long line of 50-pound test, and they don’t play their instruments as much as abuse them. (The photo gallery tells the story.) They’re currently writing material for a new record—the follow-up to 2009’s Get Color—so we caught up with bassist John Famiglietti after their Coachella set to find out more.

Video Foo Fighters Live #notatcoachella
Although I sent a lucky team of contributors out to the desert on their own personal musical journey this weekend, I am #notatcoachella. So I’m promoting all the awesome that is happening not there. If you are on twitter, use the hash tag #notatcoachella and you can contribute to the millions of us finding fun elsewhere.
In the meantime, the Foo Fighters are also #notatcoachella this year. And their new album, Wasting Light, was just released like a wild boar into my consciousness. I think these boys are onto something!
Happy Weekend Everyone!

Music Sleigh Bells Ho Ho Ho to Indio
What? Tell me you don’t think of Christmas every time you say their name? In the past year, Sleigh Bells has taken on the music industry and found themselves winning in a big, not Charlie Sheen, way. The duo, Derek Miller on guitar and synths and Alexis Krauss with her rap-esque vocals, brought about a revolution in sound. Just when you thought there was nothing new under the sun, they blast into your ear hole and rearrange your heart beat to better suit their needs.
A few weeks back I was chatting with legendary God Like Genius (thanks for that NME) Dave Grohl, and he said he only just discovered Sleigh Bells and was loving them. Mighty high praise indeed for a band on, literally, Mom+Pop Records.
Tomorrow they will be in Indio at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I suggest you slide into your hipster jeans and wiggle your way out there to see em. And if you didn’t plan accordingly for the journey to the desert then catch them on tour here:
Music Mandy’s Music Mail 1/21/11
Some awesome sauce happenings in the music world this week; one of those wonderful weeks where there was so much great stuff, it was hard to narrow down which ones to post. So, let’s get to it, eh?
I love, love, love She & Him (confession: I also have a total girl crush on Zooey Deschanel and kind of… sort of… okay totally want to be her BFF (clarification: NOT in a creepy Single White Female sort of way though). She’s absolutely gorgeous, makes awesome films (500 Days of Summer; Elf (don’t lie, you know you loved it); The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy) awesome retro-inspired music, wears the cutest clothes and just comes across as one of those people who’s just… cool, you know?). Anyway, so as I was saying, err, writing rather – I love She & Him. Miss Deschanel and M. Ward do some fine work indeed; there was a time in my life – what seems like many moons ago now – where I swear they wrote a particular song just for me. It literally depicted exactly how I felt at the time and ever since then I have completely loved these two. Check out their adorable, “retro-futuristic” video for the song “Don’t Look Back” directed by Jeremy Konner.
