Featured Oddity A Green Christmas: Tree Etiquette for the 21st Century

December 6, 2011 - 10:23 am

The holidays give us a great opportunity to flex our “sustainability muscles” like He-Man or Xena the Warrior Princess and we can start with doing right the predominant cultural centerpiece of the American living room, the Christmas tree.

My boss came to work Monday excited about her past weekend, having set up her synthetic tree. She has been using it for several seasons now, and she told me that if you use it 9 times or more, it’s impact on the world is less harsh than that of cutting down a real living tree each year. This got my mind wondering… Was this true? Is a re usable plastic tree more sustainable than a single use living tree? What is the best way to recycle both real and synthetic trees? I decided to do some research and report back. The following is what I discovered.

Bars/Clubs Featured Slip Into The Slidebar

December 5, 2011 - 4:26 pm

If you love Rock n Roll and you somehow find yourself in Fullerton California, you simply can’t miss swinging by The Slidebar. This rock venue has all the charm and integrity of the greats… CBGB’s in NYC (only without the vomit smell), The Marquee Club in London (only without the accent), or the Electric Banana in Pittsburgh (only without the crazy owner wielding a shotgun).

Hoth Skywalker Tennis Shoes: Not recommended for escaping from Imperial Walkers on Hoth, but if only Luke had been wearing these snazzy Skywalker Tennis Shoes, he might have outwitted Vader and never had his arm severed. Then again if that had happened, we wouldn’t have had Solo frozen in carbonite for half of Jedi. Or Boba Fett being thrown into the Sarlacc Pitt. Or Ewoks. Read the full story

Iron and Wine Kiss Each Other Clean

The fire’s a blazing here at Boyd Manor and my whisky is a waiting, so let’s get right into this week’s magical music, shall we?

Iron & Wine are giving away “Tree By The River,” a track off their upcoming album Kiss Each Other Clean which you can grab here. It’s your standard Iron & Wine tune, by which I mean it’s completely gorgeous and I’m totally in love with it. Kiss Each Other Clean is out January 25th; really looking forward to checking out the rest of this sure-to-be gem.

Alex Ebert 2010

Yo to the yo! The most wonderful day of the week is upon us once more and I’m here with some music updates and epic chat to make it that much more wonderful.

So. Wow. I’m completely loving Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ track “Fire & Water”. (I have an extreme weakness for folksy / country music, of which I place full blame upon my wonderful Papa Joe). The ludicrously large band (10 members – pow.) recently recorded an (awesome) iTunes session; stream the aforementioned track here and head on over here to pick up the rest of the session. Mandy totes digs.
