If you’re at Coachella and plan on spending any time in the Sahara Tent, chances are you’re going to hear your fair share of dubstep, but before the genre even really had a name, a producer named Artwork was dropping a tune called “Red” in clubs throughout the UK; a track many consider one of the earliest manifestations of the genre characterized by its big, wobbly bottom end. Flash forward to today. Artwork is still pushing the envelope, but this time he’s linked up with Benga and Skream to form Magnetic Man, who kicked off their 2011 US campaign with a prime slot at this year’s Coachella. Their debut album features guest collaborations with UK vocalists/MCs Katy B, Ms. Dynamite and Angela Hunte, along with a classic co-write with John Legend on “Getting Nowhere.” We hooked up with two-thirds of Magnetic Man—Artwork and Benga—at the side of the Main Stage while Cee Lo Green was putting on a rousing rendition of “Fuck You.”

Gallery Music Cee Lo Saved By The Bell As Ting Tings About To Deliver Final Blow
Upon being whisked into the MGM Resort and Hotel on this past Saturday imagine being confronted with a large boxing ring in the center of the hotel lobby. “What has the world of music come to?” “This can’t be for a music event could it?” With closer examination the ring was promotion for the upcoming Miguel Cotto vs Ricardo Mayorga WBA Junior Middleweight fight – so just a little sigh of relief on my part as I, as probably you, are a little new to this Soundclash idea.
6,000 plus spring breakers packed into the MGM Resorts International lot across from the Luxor to experience this Red Bull Soundclash. The event featured Grammy Award winner Cee Lo Green and British based art punk duo The Ting Tings on opposing stages with an audience sandwiched in-between.
Imagine a live version of Rock Band but with real stars playing, with real instruments and you may get a little closer to the concept. Based on five rounds Warm Up, Cover, Takeover, Clash and Wildcard two artists go toe to toe with an MC positioned in the middle.
Music Mandy’s Music Mail 2/18/11
We’re New Here the (insanely awesome) Jamie xx remix album of Gil Scott Heron’s I’m New Here doesn’t come out until the 21st, but the folks over at The Guardian have provided us with a full album stream this week! *Happy panda paws in the air!* I. Love. This. Album. So much.
The visual for Cee-Lo Green’s “Bodies” is not merely a music video but “an animated short motion picture,” which is kind of pretentious but as it’s Cee-Lo (and I love him) he gets a pass. The “animated short motion picture” was directed by Mikael Colombu and features appearances by Kerry Washington, Janelle Monae and Karl Lagerfeld. Bam. It’s an… interesting piece for sure, though the song isn’t my favorite off the album. Check it out below.

Best TV Show: Caprica
Caprica was one of the exceptional shows on television this year. A well-written, flawlessly acted, thought-provoking show that provided a showcase for social and ethnic minorities in a way that isn’t common in Hollywood. Sadly, Caprica was canceled before its first season even finished airing. But don’t fret! Those of you who haven’t been watching can already get the first half of Season 1 on DVD, and Season 1.5, which contains the rest of the season, including the five as-yet unaired episodes, was released December 20th! Just in time for a last minute gift purchase for the sci-fi fans in your life! The final five Caprica episodes will air in a marathon on SyFy January 4th at 6PM ET.
Music Prepare to be Amazed: The 2010 Grammy Nominations
After having the weekend to marinate on both this year’s Grammy nominations and the college football bowl selections, I’m having a hard time figuring out which entity frustrates me more, the BCS or the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. For both, a lot of money is riding on who gets anointed with top honors, but every year both groups seem to get more wrong than they do right. (Except for the year NARAS picked 60% right on the Album of the Year nomination with Radiohead’s OK Computer, Paul McCartney’s Flaming Pie and Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind.) But the sad fact is, both entities aren’t going away anytime soon, so we must make due with what we’ve got. I’ve highlighted a few categories below and picked some crowd favorites and dark horses. (You can see the entire list of nominations here.) Sit back, crack open a juice box, and prepare to shake your fist at the screen. And don’t forget to check out some of our very own nominations at the end. We think they deserve a little shine, too!
Music Magic Music 12/3/10
Yo to the yo! The most wonderful day of the week is upon us once more and I’m here with some music updates and epic chat to make it that much more wonderful.
So. Wow. I’m completely loving Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ track “Fire & Water”. (I have an extreme weakness for folksy / country music, of which I place full blame upon my wonderful Papa Joe). The ludicrously large band (10 members – pow.) recently recorded an (awesome) iTunes session; stream the aforementioned track here and head on over here to pick up the rest of the session. Mandy totes digs.

This week has been ridiculously busy but seriously awesome: Halloween weekend plus kicking it at the famed MSR Studios every night this week with The Roots, Miniature Tigers and Shiny Toy Guns as they rehearse for Red Bull’s Soundclashes taking place later this month in Atlanta and Phoenix. Hard to believe sometimes that this is my job. Pretty incredible. That being said, I’m most happy it’s the weekend and am looking forward to cheering my friend Tess on as she runs the New York City Marathon on Sunday!!
So speaking of The Roots (all of whom are amongst the nicest guys I’ve ever met, such wonderful and immensely talented men), check out their performance of “Maniac” (which I wrote about the other week) with St. Vincent, Kid Cudi and Cage on Jimmy Fallon.
