A homeless Navy vet finds and returns a lost wallet…

Brooklyn, NY US – Last year Dynomighty Design, makers of the Mighty Wallet, learned of the inspiring story of Brian Christopher who was, at the time, a homeless Navy Vet who had found a Mighty Wallet® full of cash without ID in the streets of Boston. Faced with a  moral dilemma of wanting to buy gifts for his own kids he nobly decided to turn the Mighty Wallet® in to a local Police station. Thanks to a receipt inside the wallet the Police found the original owner, a bike messenger, who was reunited with her Mighty Wallet® and $172 in cash.

Music Coming Down The Mountain: Milagres

September 9, 2011 - 8:17 am

The following is a list of small but memorable swag items I’ve received in press packages over the past 13 years: rolling papers, gum (not good), finger puppets, cassette tapes (recently), M.U.S.C.L.E. toys (awesome) and a very tiny harmonica. Thanks to New York’s Milagres, I can now add trading cards to that list. Specifically, Glamour Shot style trading cards with little band member bios on the back. Why hand out traditional business cards with the requisite phone number and email when you can provide people with more relevant information, like how Jodie Sweetin from Full House was your first crush. This is what people really care about, and given how Sweetin looks these days, actually shows an astute level of foresight and tastemaking.

So the lowdown on this band, according to the press release, is that Kill Rock Stars label boss Portia Sabin signed them on the strength of their music alone. This never happens, regardless of how small your label is, how good the songs are, or how desperate the industry has gotten. And Kill Rock Stars is no upstart. The music is just that good, and if you check out the live clip of the band performing “Glowing Mouth,” the title track to their new album, at the bottom of this post, you’ll see they lose nothing in translation. Singer Kyle Wilson rapped with ChinaShop about the interesting (if not mildly unfortunate) circumstances that led to the writing of the record. Then he kicked us down with a hefty list of some of his favorite albums of the decade. Take notes.

Gallery Los Angeles In Line For A “Do Over”

August 16, 2011 - 8:46 am

The line snaking outside the Cabana Club stretches nearly a full block from its starting point of a tatted Asian rocker chic with blue hair at the gate, down past a Harry Potter looking dude in jhorts, and finishes with what looks from here, a Pakistani Jesus complete with robe. This multi-cultural serpent has become a spectacle of its own in a town all too familiar with lines of lost souls outside a club, for this one is bathed in daylight on a Sunday afternoon! It even has a Twitter hashtag (#do-over-line). But don’t fret, for in exchange for your patience, your body will soon be baptized in the spirit-s: Sangria, Soul music, and most likely Somebody else. (RT @waldorules: @do_over EVEN THE SOCIALLY AWKWARD SOUND GUY IN STAR TREK T-SHIRT IS GETTING LAID AFTER THIS ONE!)

Featured Music NewVillager set-up Temporary Culture in LA

August 2, 2011 - 10:25 am

NewVillager

Picture the motley imagination of Where The Wild Things Are mixed with the quixotic, avant garde world of Fischerspooner. Throw in the patience and immersion of a method actor. Then strip it all down and build it back up using a boutique, DIY aesthetic. This, in a nutshell, is how NewVillager have approached their craft. Are they artists? Yes, and not just in the musical sense. Ben Bromley and Ross Simonini—along with a cast of characters spread between San Francisco, Brooklyn, and all points in between—are just as keen on creating elaborate art installations as they are three-minute tunes. Are they musicians? Totally, yet their record is chock-a-block with big hooks and indie pop melody. Nothing is over your head, yet the band talks, almost reverentially, about a “mythology” they adhere to; something intrinsically connected to the way in which they form new creative ideas.

Contest The “Effin Ladies” Get Your Motor Runnin’: Red Bull Creation

July 5, 2011 - 11:11 am

Lady Zsah Zsah Rebuild 2008 (6)

On July 10th, teams of inventors, makers, and hackers will head to Brooklyn, New York where they will embark on a 72-hour anything goes build-a-thon. The event, known as Red Bull Creation, will challenge teams to push their imaginative limits and “create the future.” Upon arriving in New York, contestants will be given a theme, taken to a creative build space, and unleashed on the streets of New York city as they scramble to acquire materials and seek inspiration for creating a potentially winning masterpiece. After being judged in front of a live audience, the winners will go home with a load of cash and tools to support future projects.

16 teams are officially in the running, with six deemed as wild cards. Among the wild cards is the all female team of Zorah and Tirzah Rodgers, Laura Leva, and Sarah Kihls who call themselves “Effin Ladies.” The ladies bring a twist to the contest, as unlike many of the contenders, they are scattered around the United States and until July 10th, have never collaborated on a project as a unit. They haven’t quite lined all their ducks in a row but come contest day, the Effin Ladies plan on bringing the heat.

ChinaShop tracked these ladies down to pick their brains on their backgrounds as artists and to nab some insider secrets on how they are preparing for the big day.
