–How a 21-year-old, Seattle Producer Got His Chance to Record with Young Buck –

During its first national search in 2007, Red Bull Big Tune swooped through six cities in seven months, pulling in more than 300 tracks from 72 music producers. The process: submit your hottest beats, get selected to rep your city, then battle other producers in a single-elimination sound clash where the audience determines the winner. The goal: to find the one producer with the Big Tune.

“You ready for all this? All these cameras and lights and shit?”

1:54pm – With the beat on loop. Buck starts putting pen to paper. For the next 30 minutes the control room is a flurry of activity, but Buck and Brain sit relatively motionless, their heads bobbing to the track while they mouth indistinguishable lyrics.

2:33pm – Buck hits the booth. Like a conductor he orchestrates the session fluidly and demonstratively, laying down overdub after overdub. A little delay here, a little pitch-shifting there. The banter with the cameraman continues. Buck thinks they could give “Rob & Big” a run for their money. “Buck & The Cameraman,” coming soon to a network near you. Don’t sleep.

3:20pm – Next verse.

4:24pm – After getting a co-sign from Buck, Brainstorm hits the booth to lay down a verse of his own. After remaining low key for most of the afternoon, Brain comes alive on the mic, and the entire vibe changes. What started as a producer gig turns into a true collaboration; beats, lyrics, the whole nine. The track gets a name: “I Got You.” By 5:22pm all the parts are laid down and Buck takes a moment to reflect on the process.

“You can’t help but move to this record,” he says, “and that’s my whole thing right now. I feel like people wanna move. It’s new for me, though. This is me coming outside of my element.”
