When Ann Closs-Farley put together Forbidden Fashion: A Collection of Criminal Couture, she issued a challenged to her fellow Los Angeles designers. Instead of assembling the typical pricey and extremely designer pieces common to any runway show, she demanded a different set of criteria be met: Everything had to be created from “found, recycled or stolen materials.”

When the lights dimmed for the series of shows, models bearing everything from comic book accessorized suits to dresses made of playing cards and Dixie cups took to the catwalk with ease. The shows were a success, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats and occasionally bringing them to laughter. Following the production, ChinaShop sat down with Closs-Farley to discuss her vision for the show, unusual ensembles, and what goes through her head while models walk the runway.

Music Terraplane Sun’s Beachy Blues

Terraplane Sun is a band you don’t want to miss. The blues-rock quintet has an upcoming feature on the NBC’s show 1st Look LA. They will hold there second residency at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas coming this winter November and December. With Las Vegas and several live dates in Amsterdam, Terraplane Sun has been embarking on their west coast tour with shows at the Echo, Bootleg Theater, Hotel Cafe, Malibu Inn and more to come.

Gallery Music Le Butcherettes: Sin, Blood, And Fluctuating Moods

I’ve heard about the crazy performances that are typical of Le Butcherettes, but last week’s CD release show for the band’s Sin, Sin, Sin far exceeded any hype that I’d been exposed to.

Backstage before the set, I chatted with lead singer, Teri Gender Bender, who explained that her on stage antics go hand in hand with her fluctuating moods. “I just let the raw emotion come out. It depends on how I feel I guess,” says Bender.

The band, known for creating a stir in the Mexican underground scene for a daring live act involving elements such as artificial blood smearing, a depiction of women as slaves to household chores, and controversial props including a real pig head, has morphed into a different realm of entertaining, according to Bender.
