I have a love/hate relationship with most cover songs. Much like I have a love/hate relationship with gin, ice cream and the New York Mets. Very few of them are ever well executed, and some of them induce fits of rage: Dynamite Hack’s “Boyz In The Hood,” (criminal) Jason Mraz’s version of “I Melt With You” (really, dude?), and Korn’s “Another Brick In The Wall” (shoot me now). Others are just too good and/or easy to mention: Guns N Roses’ version of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” The Cowboy Junkies’ “Sweet Jane,” and Sonic Youth’s cover of “Superstar.” Then there are the ones on the list before you.

For the past 42 years Leonard Cohen has been making some of the most important, beautiful, passionate songs ever written. His ability to infuse a song with emotion transcends time, only getting better with age and experience.  Actually being able to see the man himself onstage is a little like the second coming. After all, he is the “jew who wrote the bible”.
