Film Fridays Will Bruce Wayne Die in The Dark Knight Rises? Who Will Replace Him?

December 2, 2011 - 9:34 pm

Perhaps the best (or at least most tantalizing) theory behind The Dark Knight Rises comes courtesy of Cody Johnston, who I’m gonna paraphrase, dissect, and pimp the sh*t out of on this one. His concept is simple and sound: If Nolan is the Nolan he’s led us to believe he is, he’ll kill Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight Rises. There’s a few good reasons why.

Art Gallery DC Relaunch Party at Meltdown: Cosplay, Comics, and Catwomen Galore

September 8, 2011 - 8:53 am

There may be a big resurgence of all things nerd going on right now, but as the line between ‘geek’ and ‘nerd’ and ‘dork’ thins, as those damn hipsters start to infiltrate the scene wearing pairs of black framed glasses and pre-washed baseball comic shirts from Target, Meltdown Comics on Sunset may be the last bastion of all things nerd. Some might even call it Xanadu.

And tonight was to mark an historic event: for the first time since the 1980s, DC Comics were going to be rebooting every single one of their comic franchises. The first, Justice League #1, was to officially drop at midnight.

Fashion Gallery Comic Book Vixens = Every Fanboy’s Wet Dream

July 25, 2011 - 10:49 am

Despite missing Comic-Con this year, I have experienced in an hour what many lifelong attendees won’t. Ever. For instance, if I were to tell you that at this year’s convention, every hot chick dressed as a comic book character will be doused with a Smylex-like pheromone gas that will make them instantaneously peel off their clothes, chances are you’d kill/pillage/etc. to get tickets.

Or you could have done something even better, and gone to Comic Book Vixens — the new show by the burlesque troop Devil’s Playground. Which did all that, and more. This thing couldn’t have been more perfectly tailored to any comic (especially DC!) aficionado. Naked Harley Quinn. Naked Poison Ivy. You get the picture — if not, have some…

Film Fridays GI Joe 2 Developments, Anne Hathaway Gets Hotter, and More on Ridley Scott’s Alien Prequel

July 1, 2011 - 10:43 pm

Prometheus

It’s been a slow news week for movies, aside from a couple Dark Knight Rises developments — which I’ll spare you, just because I’ve done enough reporting on that and there’s really nothing that big. Apart from the fact that Nolan and co. want to land a big-ass cargo plane called a Hercules on some residential street in Scotland (which has some of the yokels up in arms about it understandably) and Anne Hathway’s Catwoman costume will more closely resemble the one of recent comics as opposed to the Eartha Kitt/Julie Newmar/Michelle Pfeiffer digs.

(Conceptual Artwork courtesy of fanboiii). Whaddya think? Too realistic, not sexy enough? Cause according to official sources, this may be the pretty much the next closest thing.

Art Gallery You Call Yourself An Artist? Street Art At Maximillian Gallery

June 16, 2011 - 10:58 am

Street art is the Lady Gaga of the art world, it’s all the rage right now.

Currently on display inside the Sunset Marquis’s Maximillian Gallery is “What Graffiti is to New York – Street Art is to Los Angeles.” The gallery, which is curated by Melrose & Fairfax, takes a look at the street art movement in the Los Angeles scene.

From a 9-year old artist who sketches portraits of Pee Wee Herman and Batman, to a porn star who draws from her controversial background as inspiration, the exhibit takes viewers through a unique array of artist visions.

Art People Are Strange (This Means You): Tim Burton Goes to LACMA

June 9, 2011 - 10:19 am

Tim Burton @ LACMA

Unlike so many modern art museums, with their half-assed, 1-painting-every-10-feet exhibit rooms, the minds behind LACMA’s new Tim Burton display have made it a fully immersive event. From the crooked walls which compliment his labyrinthine mind, to a giant monster mouth you must brave to get there — suburbanites and city-slickers alike are being plucked from their ordinary world and thrown into the strange. Consider it less a museum space than sanctuary inside Burton’s pleasantly twisted brain.

Comic Books Featured Gallery I’m Batman Damnit…

July 29, 2009 - 9:28 pm

Comic Com 09’ is a sea filled with bobbing pop-characters ranging from a black Scooby Doo to a white Darth Vader. A 4yr old “I Dream of Genie” to a 65yr old Wonder Woman. And we’re not just talking about your run of the mill store bought Halloween bullshit here either kiddos. While costume design can begin the gambit with a simple sponge paint Poke’mon t-shirt; it’s the 2 years in the making handmade cosplayer’s guise, which truly embodies a fan. Chris “Wayne”, we shall call him, just so happens to be one of those devotees.

I shot some 300 different pop-characters and saw easily over a couple thousand alt personas over the course of Comic Con 09’. But it was this variant of the caped crusader that stood out. I really wanted to know what it took to dress as Batman Beyond in time and character. Here’s what I found out.
