Music TPC Takeover: 03 – The Strokes – “Under Control”

August 26, 2011 - 10:48 am

Next up in the 3 slot is a little ditty by The Strokes called “Under Control.”

“2003 is The Strokes’ “Under Control” which is just the best understated Strokes song. I love that song. It’s so simple. The thing with that song is we thought it might be too straight up if we just played it as is. We got kind of a little bit of a I don’t know what you call it, it’s not reggae it’s like dubby – some sort of another groove going for it.” – David Monks of TPC

Music Eve 6 Reunites Inside and Out

May 27, 2011 - 10:11 am

Eve 6

It’s been nearly seven years since the original three members of Eve 6 played their last show together and there was little doubt as to whether the alternative rock trio would ever grace the stage again.

But a few months ago, vocalist/bassist Max Collins and drummer Tony Fagenson received a pleasantly surprising text message from the founding guitarist.

“We heard from ‘Sweet Pea’ — Jon Siebels, as we call him,” Collins recalls. “We had lunch and decided to try out a rehearsal to see how things flowed, and it felt fantastic. We’re just stoked on it!”

Gallery Music Jordan Cook at the Fabulous Car Hotel

April 6, 2011 - 11:04 am

I was making the arduous journey through the labyrinth of pedi-cabs and equipment laden masses that is SXSW when I encountered Jordan Cook and crew. Here were three guys just sitting in the fading sunlight on a curb restringing their guitars when I approached. I had been looking for a band that I could interview about what it was like to come to SXSW without any means and holding only hope for that big break. “Nah man, we’re not homeless this week, thankfully,” allows Jordan when I asked if they, like numerous bands this week, were staying at the fabulous Car Hotel. “These cool ladies have just been letting us park our car here, so we’re gonna play a bit for em.”

Music The Majestic Mister Heavenly

March 25, 2011 - 8:13 am

Lets define the term “Supergroup”. Webster defines it very narrowly as “A rock group made up of prominent former members of other rock groups; also an extremely successful rock group.”

This definition would cover three of Mister Heavenly’s four members – Honus Honus of Man Man on keys and vocals, Nicholas Thorburn of Unicorns and Islands on vocals and guitar while Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer keeps time.

But how to place our fourth member? Did anyone even know he could play instruments? I guess he sang a little in Juno… Yes, thats right. Actor Michael Cera has picked up a bass and is touring with some of the most talented musicians alive.

Music Apex Manor: Drinking And Thriving

March 22, 2011 - 10:52 am

I remember the day I got this promo in the mail. The Merge Records stamp on the press release piqued my interest, but it was the album title that moved it to the top of my listening stack for the afternoon: The Year Of Magical Drinking. I was vaguely familiar with the piece of literature on which the title was modeled after, but the music stood in complete juxtaposition with the book’s maudlin themes. This was a rock and roll record to be played loud with the top down, preferably while going a cool 60mph up the 2 Freeway from Echo Park to La Cañada. Download “Under The Gun” for free here, then give it a spin. You’ll see what I mean.

Gallery Music Red Bull Big Tune Welcomes Black Milk to Chicago

November 19, 2010 - 12:34 pm

Let’s just get this out of the way: hip-hop shows, more than any other genre, regularly feature an absurd amount of waiting before the headliner you went to see finally hits the stage—often after midnight. Some of the opening acts or DJs you see beforehand might be good and you may even be hyped to have been introduced to them, but when it takes four hours before the main act steps on stage, shit can get old. With this in mind, Black Milk’s last minute, Red Bull Big Tune pre-show in Chicago at Reggie’s Rock Club was as close to ideal as you can get.
