Fashion Video Wheels & Doll Baby Versus Ellen Von Unwerth = Pin-Up Perfection!

February 2, 2012 - 10:28 am

It’s a rare occasion that two of your favourites come together so wonderfully — & when it happens, it’s worth celebrating.

Wheels & Doll Baby was founded in Perth, Australia, in 1987. The label, with its quirky yet upscale retro vibe, quickly became a celebrity favourite, being seen on the backs (& fronts!) of the likes of Dita Von Teese, Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue & Elle Macpherson. It’s utterly unlike anything else in Australia — or, for that matter, the rest of the world. Wheels & Doll Baby do sex-kitten vintage like no other.

So it makes perfect sense, then, that the illustrious label teamed up with famed fashion photographer, Ellen Von Unwerth, on their latest campaign. Von Unwerth started as a model, working the other side of the lens for 10 years before making the switch. Her provocative photographs celebrate the power & mystery of femininity, as well as the potential of the perfect pout!

Cast your eyeballs over the video & pictures below if you don’t believe me! I absolutely love this collaboration: it makes me want to wear red lipstick every day for the rest of my life!

Featured Gallery Music Punk Rock Pool Party: Old Man Markley

June 22, 2011 - 9:00 am

One of the best things about Summertime is the abundance of pool parties. But if that pool party is in Las Vegas and Old Man Markley is playing, then it’s possibly the Best Pool Party Ever!

Iron Fist Clothing hosted the Punk Rock Pool Party and Bikini Contest at the Goldspike Hotel in Vegas, just off historic Freemont Street in Old Las Vegas. The pool area itself is classic mid-century motor inn, far from the shadow of the McHotels on the strip. Perfect for sunbathing! And an afternoon invasion from punks around the globe (including Canada and Australia!) which didn’t seem to bother the hotel staff one bit.

All of which makes for a very excited panda. So, let’s kick off this week’s music news with a track from the immensely talented, Skream! Featured Gallery Music Way With Words Takes Red Bull Studios

January 27, 2011 - 10:51 am

By the time I was 18 all I had ever recorded was the outgoing message on my answering machine. Not so much for 16 yr old front man Joey Cirillo of Australia’s newest pop/alt group Way With Words. He and his stoked band of still teen demons, Dylan Giannakopoulos (guitar), Luke  Mann (guitar), Sam Berry (bass), Jack Nicholls (drums), have spent the last 7 days in Los Angeles recording their first EP at Red Bull Studios, an $80,000 reward for winning Australia’s first Red Bull Bedroom Jam.

Fashion Black Milk Does Minimalist Luxe

Designer leggings.  Is that an oxymoron?!

James Lillis of Black Milk would say no.  Based in Australia, this designer — who had no formal training –  was first inspired by the fashion atrocities he saw committed on the street!  Australia is awash with leggings: every girl owns several pairs, & many of them prefer leggings over pants.  Now, there’s nothing wrong with that — we are all entitled to our preferred aesthetic.  But what really upset James was the poor quality of the leggings he saw girls wearing.  If you use cheap cotton to make leggings, the sad outcome will eventually include saggy knees & bottoms, which don’t flatter anyone.

He decided that he couldn’t take it any more!  Why couldn’t anyone make good quality leggings?!  Maybe he was the right man for the job.  After many, many hours at a sewing machine, breaking needles & making messes, he created his Black Wetlook leggings & hasn’t looked back since.

Music The Vines

December 11, 2009 - 5:35 pm

the vines

There’s something different yet oh-so-familiar about The Vines. They play unpolished proto-punk–the kind your daddy would have liked, probably, had he been a punk rocker, perhaps the kind The MC5 and some of their cohorts of the time would have churned out. There’s even a little bit of, dare I say, The Pistols themselves in there, a bit of the Clash–if you remember what loud, distorted guitar, a chugging, bottom-end bass, and just good old-fashioned Marshall amp feedback was like. It might be a welcome change from all the teenybopper pseudo-punk you hear nowadays, and is best appreciated LIVE–in this case, at the SXSW Festival, and available now on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
