The line snaking outside the Cabana Club stretches nearly a full block from its starting point of a tatted Asian rocker chic with blue hair at the gate, down past a Harry Potter looking dude in jhorts, and finishes with what looks from here, a Pakistani Jesus complete with robe. This multi-cultural serpent has become a spectacle of its own in a town all too familiar with lines of lost souls outside a club, for this one is bathed in daylight on a Sunday afternoon! It even has a Twitter hashtag (#do-over-line). But don’t fret, for in exchange for your patience, your body will soon be baptized in the spirit-s: Sangria, Soul music, and most likely Somebody else. (RT @waldorules: @do_over EVEN THE SOCIALLY AWKWARD SOUND GUY IN STAR TREK T-SHIRT IS GETTING LAID AFTER THIS ONE!)

Music Electric Zoo: Party Animals Ready Set Go
So we here at ChinaShop don’t know what your plans are for this Labor Day weekend but if you don’t have any or even if you do, cancel them quick and head out to the Electric Zoo, New York’s electronic music festival out on Randall’s Island. There will be tons of music, interactive arts displays and plenty of eats to keep your dancin’ pants on all day.
Music Chromeo: A Time Warp in Funk
Posing by a Delorian seems like a fail-safe marketing move – you see Marty McFly’s car, and you’re probably interested in what’s being offered. In this case, it’s also quite appropriate, as Chromeo consists of a couple talented guys (David Macklovitch/P-Thugg and Patrick Gemayel/Dave 1) who’ve immersed themselves in the electrofunk and R&B pop of yore, and whose own brand comes so close to sounding exactly like Klymaxx or Tito Jackson that one might believe they really did fly back in time to steal their sounds. But it’s not only a devotion to that old sound, but a duo whose hard work remixing a variety of artists — everyone from Lenny Kravitz to Hall and Oates, the latter of whom they’ve even been compared with — is finally getting them some exposure. (Though to be fair, one of them being the brother of the one-and-only A-Trak, winner of the 2007 DMC World Championships, surely can’t hurt their chances). Throw in that unmistakable reverence for 1980s/early 90s radio-R & B and pop like Tito and Rockwell, and Chromeo proves all it takes is that love for rehashed music, and maybe a little patience as you wait over a period of a decade or 2 for the musical cycle you’re in to repeat itself, to get yourself noticed. The right amount of work and the right timing is everything. Enough lecturing; Red Bull Music Academy Radio can school you best.
Featured Gallery Music A-Trak: Mild-Mannered Turntable Maniac
In the middle of the afternoon in the Red Bull Lounge at Movement 2010, A-Trak quietly weaves his way through a wave of photographers clamoring for a photo. He smiles, turns his head on command, doesn’t give much fuss if a particular shot takes longer than expected. His handler is just as tame, glancing up every now and then from his Blackberry back-and-forth to make sure everything is running on schedule (or at least running in the right direction). At the age of 28, this is already a well-rehearsed routine for A-Trak. For the past 12 years, A-Trak (born Alain Macklovitch) has flown in, enjoyed the array of catering, accommodated the press, smiled for the photographers, grabbed his paycheck and flown out. The only (and most important) part of this routine that refuses to follow a set path is when the articulate, calm yet expressive A-Trak hits the stage, combining the most appealing parts of house and hip-hop with technically savvy takes on turntablism (read: wild card, bitches!).
Music Blog Right :: Asian Dan (AsianManDan.com)
Every week, China Shop talks to a music blogger who is taking part in the new global music community.
They call it blog house for a reason. Okay, no one really calls it blog house anymore, but back when they did call it blog house, Asian Dan was more than just another clearing house for illicit electro remixes. Whether hanging out with A-Trak, or scooping the entire internet on the infamous Justice rejected Fabric mix, Asian Dan is always our first stop to see where dance music is headed next.

Music A-Trak
If anything A-Trak can claim rights to being the very youngest (age 15) and the first Canadian DJ to win the prestigious DMC DJ Award. He’s also belonged to some of electro and hip-hop’s most beloved groups, including Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and worked alongside such artists such as Kanye West and MSTRKRFT. With an increasingly impressive list of accolades, he’s clearly become one of the industry/commercial darlings, and (refreshingly) one who has experimented with many different sounds and genres. Perfect for everything from raves to the sort of cyberpunkish-electronic wave, akin to Daft Punk (so aptly described on Red Bull Music Academy Radio). Get a closer listen at the RBMA website.
