“The Year of the Doors” officially kicks off on Monday, January 9 at noon Eastern when the iconic rock band will officially debut the first new, completely unreleased song in 40 years, “She Smells So Nice.” The bluesy track captures the band–organist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, drummer John Densmore and late singer Jim Morrison–joyfully barreling through the full-throttle original. Bruce Botnick, the album’s co-producer with the band, recently made the discovery while reviewing the L.A. WOMAN session tapes. The song will premiere on the band’s Facebook page on Monday and will then be serviced to radio the following day.

Film Fridays If Movie Posters Told the Truth; Stephen King Gets Film Anthology; and ‘Akira’ Dies a Horrible Death (We Hope)
Movie posters are pretty much all lies. And most of the time, they’re better than the actual film they’re promoting. But theshiznit, who have taken the gist of some of the latest and most popular films to come out, make a good point — given the level of hate aimed at Sarah Jessica Parker, one can’t help but wonder exactly how she keeps getting roles. And Drive, as awesome as it was, is a kind of just like an awesome video game.

Featured Music The Sidekicks Unleash “Awkward Breeds”
It’s not often that people who are serious about making music stick with their “first band”, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Steve Ciolek (Vocals & Guitar) and Matt Climer (Drums), the long-time axis and backbone behind The Sidekicks. The two Cleveland natives were childhood buds that played high school sports together and shared an interest in spikey-haired punk rock bands that would probably make them cringe today. The first incarnation of The Sidekicks was a gruff punk rock quartet that bore the markings of bands like Against Me! and Hot Water Music; and their first proper full length, “So Long, Soggy Dog,” is what caught the attention of the punk scene as well as Chicago label, Red Scare. It may have been gritty, but it was a clear sign of things to come and even then these teenagers stood out from their peers. The band was dedicated to the DIY scene and toured with like-minded punk bands such as Teenage Bottlerocket, O Pioneers!!!, Cobra Skulls, etc.
Art It’s a Jungle Out There (Robots with Donuts)
Every artist has his calling card and for Eric Joyner, it’s robots… and donuts. Joyner’s pop-surrealism works featuring giant tin robots traveling through space, pastoral landscapes, and urban environments have caught the eye of many an art lover, and are a favorite of writer/director/producer extraordinaire, J.J. Abrams. A member of the San Francisco and New York Society of Illustrators, Joyner has created illustrations for the likes of Mattel, Microsoft, and Showtime. In addition, he’s displayed his signature robot and donut paintings at worldwide galleries and cultural institutions, including San Jose’s Museum of Art.
Fashion Gallery Forbidden Fashion: A Collection of Criminal Couture
When Ann Closs-Farley put together Forbidden Fashion: A Collection of Criminal Couture, she issued a challenged to her fellow Los Angeles designers. Instead of assembling the typical pricey and extremely designer pieces common to any runway show, she demanded a different set of criteria be met: Everything had to be created from “found, recycled or stolen materials.”
When the lights dimmed for the series of shows, models bearing everything from comic book accessorized suits to dresses made of playing cards and Dixie cups took to the catwalk with ease. The shows were a success, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats and occasionally bringing them to laughter. Following the production, ChinaShop sat down with Closs-Farley to discuss her vision for the show, unusual ensembles, and what goes through her head while models walk the runway.
Art Featured Gallery Art in the Flesh: Dr Sketchy’s L.A.
A few years back, a Brooklyn artist who goes by the moniker Molly Crabapple, decided art school was not cool and dropped out. And lucky for us she did. Otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article and dammit I wouldn’t have had the chance to shoot Samion, le nude muse for this installment of the Los Angeles chapter’s Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. Fittingly, this kickoff for a new year of the bi-monthly pop-up figure-drawing cabaret for artists and art lovers was held at the Titmouse Inc. animation compound in Hollywood, home to all things awesome and strange.
