Gallery Music A Crüed Awakening

May 9, 2011 - 11:36 am

The story of their career, which the band elected to tell in graphic detail and with complete honesty in their NY Times best-selling 2001 autobiography, The Dirt (soon to be a major motion picture) is one of dirty needles, damaged minds, music industry battles and sex – lots of sex. And the miraculous thing about the Crüe is not that they lived to tell the tale (although that is, in a way, a kind of unholy miracle), it’s that all of their wildly uncontrollable habits are clearly audible in their music. Just listen to these albums, more than 40 million of which have sold worldwide. If you concentrate hard enough, you can hear the sound of the coke coming off the tables, the squeak of the bed springs, and the sheer sleazy grind of California rock over the last two decades.

Last weekend, the Crüe not only gave the East Rutherford crowd their fix, but they also used the event as an opportunity to announce their upcoming headlining tour with equally ornery 80s rockers Poison and the New York Dolls… And yes, Tommy Lee will be hovering, spinning, and drum soloing above your head in his “drum rollercoaster”. Oh, and in true Crüe fashion, The band commissioned their fans to choose the final tour set list (on their website), which includes tracks band hasn’t performed live together in almost 20 years.

Take a look at the fearsome foursome in action at the Bamboozle festival below and get your red hot tour dates after the jump.

Gallery Music The Ready Set Get Bamboozled

May 9, 2011 - 11:19 am

The Ready Set, aka Jordan Mark Witzigreuter, served up a delightful set of eletro-pop to the New Jersey crowd at Bamboozle 2011 last weekend. Jordan’s story is interesting, he’s really just a one man band using hired guns to perform and tour. He decided to go by The Ready Set because he thought his last name, Witzigreuter, would inevitably be too hard for people to pronounce. Its a clever way around that whole, band-name-is-my-name dilemma.

Film Fridays Thor vs.The Beaver! Or: ChinaShop Reviews Movies We Haven’t Seen Yet

May 6, 2011 - 7:41 pm

Ach du Beaver

The two movies receiving the most hype this weekend are The Beaver, although the speculation is really over whether it’s going to redeem Mel Gibson’s career. So far, the verdict ain’t that good. Roger Ebert lauded the film’s performances, though he apparently has trouble with the fact that it’s about a man who, well, wears a beaver puppet on his hand. Manhola Dargis, self-proclaimed greatest film reviewer in the world, claims that “A promising story about a madman and his puppet fast becomes a trite tale of a father and son as the combustible Mr. Gibson is tamped down…” I’m not going to waste my time watching the movie. I’m giving The Beaver a sh*tty review based solely on the sh*tty trailer.

Gallery Music You Bet They Are: LMFAO

May 6, 2011 - 12:35 pm

LMFAO is a party rock phenomenon. They have not only taken over the airwaves with catchy summer fun tunes you can’t cleanse from your ear hole but they launched a clothing line aptly named, Party Rock. Maybe you can’t get behind DJ/Rappers  Redfoo and SkyBlu’s antics and overall jovial love for the ladies, but you have to admit they bring their A game every show. If you don’t love living in the moment, stay inside ya sad sack and watch The Golden Girls reruns on the tv.

LMFAO at Bamboozle 2011

This past weekend they took the stage at Bamboozle 2011 and we caught em in the act. Shots Shots Shots for everyone!

Featured Gallery Music Forever The Sickest Kids: Things ARE Getting Pretty Serious

May 6, 2011 - 11:37 am

Forever the Sickest Kids put the final smack down on their Spring Break Your Heart Tour by playing 2 nights at Bamboozle 2011. After jumping off the road with friends, Breathe Carolina, Before Their Eyes, This Century and We Are The In Crowd they unleashed their particular flavor of rock n roll for wildly excited crowds in New Jersey.

This American Pop Punk Band from Texas signed to Universal Motown Records Group in 2007 and has been gaining momentum ever since. Although a lot of people are only now just hearing about FTSK, they have built a solid following of the young and impressionable. With a respectable web presence and endless touring, these guys aren’t going away anytime soon.

Art All Hands On Decks: The Skateboard Art of Haroshi

May 6, 2011 - 10:53 am

Haroshi Skateboard art

A few years ago, Tokyo-based artist Haroshi, a passionate skater since his early teens, was faced with a common conundrum among his ilk: a growing collection of broken skate decks.

“Purchasing new decks is a never-ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room,” he says on his website. “We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these.”

Eight years ago, Haroshi started making sculptures out of the discarded decks — a skull, his limbs, a life-size moose head, a bear, Mario from Donkey Kong — with jaw-dropping results. Now some of his most spectacular works are on display in a solo exhibition at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York.

Gallery Urban Exploration Rome [Tastes Like Ice Cream]

May 6, 2011 - 10:51 am

You don’t get to feel a city’s pulse until you’ve been trapped on a few of its highways. To understand what I mean, do this: wake up in the fog-dipped countryside, speed through the open space of sparsely populated fields, then past the first signs of industry – factories, pristine and painted in candy colors or splattered with graffiti, past car dealerships and low-income suburbs, until the highway is choking on traffic and you’re stopped at a toll booth, the humming city emerging at this final checkpoint. Now we’re ready to enter Rome.

Gallery Music Why He’s Wiz Khalifa

May 5, 2011 - 1:46 pm

In case you were wondering (like me) why he’s such a Wiz: “Wiz Khalifa- His stage name is derived from khalifa, an Arabic word meaning “successor”, and wisdom, which was shortened to Wiz when Khalifa was fifteen.” -Wikipedia.  Apparently, as Wiz told spinner magazine, he was such a talented child, a wiz at everything so to speak, and that also played a role in his choosing the name.

If you are like me, you’re also wondering why his incredibly loyal fans are called the “Taylor Gang”.  Well, I did some research and it turns out that contrary to popular belief, it’s not because the artist and his followers rock Converse Chuck Tailors, rather, the name comes from the fact that the original Wiz crew originated from Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh.  Oh… and “Black and Yellow” is a Pittsburgh reference (sealers/Pirates/etc) in case you didn’t already know.

Now that you’re caught up on all the Wiz facts, It’s time to show you the pictures from the Rapper’s Bamboozle performance.

Gallery Urban Exploration Gods and Gladiators: A Brief, Sticky Tour of Rome’s Top Attractions

May 5, 2011 - 11:52 am

When presented with the dilemma of choosing Roman wonders to stuff into one day, the simplest approach is to consult any list of Rome’s top most visited attractions. Among them, you’ll find The Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, Piazza Navona and the Roman Forum. Not that I’m suggesting to necessarily go for the obvious. Not at all! In this case, however, each of these places are areas of great personal interest, and I’m prepared to suffer the heat to see them.
