Featured Gallery New York City Graffiti perseveres in the ever-changing NYC
August 11, 2010 - 12:56 pm
Graffiti and New York City are inseparable. Regardless of how many security cameras are installed or other preventative measures enacted, there is no way to completely stop writers from leaving their names on surfaces across the expansive five boroughs. It’s a decades old tradition that not even rabid gentrification can cease. And in 2010, it’s good to see that walls, doors, street posts, and all reachable surfaces are still being hit up with style.
New York City Hester Street Fair

Exploring an outdoor market on a Sunday is a time-honored New York tradition. From single girls searching for the perfect vintage dress to old couples bickering lovingly over a pair of lampshades, they attract all types. On a good day at a market, you can find almost anything. Old photographs, back issues of your once-favorite magazine, almost unworn vintage boots & a pink rotary telephone? It’s yours for the taking!
Gallery New York City She’s My Coney Island Baby
July 19, 2010 - 12:44 pm
…She’s my Coney Island giiirl. Tom Waits songs aside, Coney Island is a place of fable and legend. At least what’s left of it is. Ask a seasoned New Yorker about its history, and you’ll get an earful of freaklore, circus fairy tales, and nostalgia, along with anger at the merciless gentrification that’s been eating the peninsula alive since before WWII. Between the tearing down of amusements to make room for housing projects and resorts [and funnel out the “tawdry” entertainment and its community] to recent waves of family-friendly zoning, it will be a wonder if any of Coney Island’s history will remain in place five, or even two years from now.
New York City July 4th in New York: Red White and Brews
July 9, 2010 - 4:41 pm
Dorks on one side of the line. Cool kids on the other. This high school dichotomy holds fast for much of New York nightlife, and it’s something that Seen Magazine is trying to change. Starting with their launch party.
On July 4th, Seen Magazine, the street wear brand Mishka, and the Comic Books Legal Defense Fund threw an epic party at Water Taxi Beach, artificial patch of sand and neon palm trees on the East River. Music by Beach Fossils and the Death Set blasted as the sun set over Manhattan.
New York City Hotel Chelsea: Rock and Roll Digs
June 15, 2010 - 3:09 pm
No other hotel has as much rock ‘n’ roll history. So, it’s not perfect — or particularly opulent. There is no room service, some of the rooms are more “grunge” than chic, & there is a bullet hole in the door in the 5th floor corridor. But it’s absolutely worth a visit to soak up some atmosphere.
Featured New York City Lula’s Sweet Apothecary
June 8, 2010 - 10:23 am

If you’re in Manhattan, there’s no better place to go for a sugar hit on a balmy, sticky night. From caramel marshmallow sundaes to chocolate peanut butter malted shakes, Lula’s Sweet Apothecary beckons you in with a saccharine finger. There are all your childhood favorites & flavors: hot fudge sauce, tantalizing maraschino cherries, & chocolate or rainbow sprinkles, but the best thing? Lula’s fare is completely vegan. The entire joint is animal-free, right down to their non-gelatin gummy bears & coconut whipped cream.
New York City Springtime in the NYC
April 14, 2010 - 11:43 am
The bumblebees murmur among the flowers, the blue skies seem endless & dog owners are out cruising other dog owners. Yes, spring is finally here & it couldn’t have come at a better time. Just when everyone in New York was about to hit their absolute limit with the cold weather, suddenly the sun came out, & everything seemed good again.
Music New York City 2ND Annual Gold Rush Awards: Artistic Relaxation
March 30, 2010 - 10:58 am
Another Thursday night in NYC, and yes, another fully-catered art event to attend – and of course, another chance to mingle with Gotham’s elite, indie and cool kid population. Sometimes us New Yorkers tend to forget how good our lives really are; not to trample on the nightlife scene of other cities, but in NYC, it’s truly an embarrassment of riches.
New York City OPENING CEREMONY AT ACE HOTEL IN NEW YORK
January 12, 2010 - 3:24 pm
Ace Hotel is definitely the place to stay if you ever find yourself in Portland, Seattle, Palm Springs or New York City. Their offbeat, nouveau-bohemian interior design has been attracting artists, designers, geeks with style & international jet setters — you know, people just like you — since 1999. The New York City location has morphed into something beyond just a place to rest your head.
Art/Design New York City D.U.M.B.O. Brooklyn: Art, Nostalgia & Idyllic Facades
September 15, 2009 - 10:42 am
D.U.M.B.O., or Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is the first subway stop when you traveling from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the F-train. It’s a tranquil little area bursting at the seams with eye-popping street murals, old-style New York nostalgia, artists, assorted creative types, and a bevy of kitschy, drinking spots. The buildings here are mostly old warehouse monoliths housing modern photo /music/art studios, avant-garde galleries, underground ‘zines, indie film shops, fashion/furniture showrooms and band practice spaces. Surprisingly, there are also a high number of pet and baby supply shops – apparently the art of domestication and home-building is also held in high regard around these parts.
The Dumbo work fleet is made up of unique creatures of habit. At lunch time, they creep out from behind their Apple laptop screens and air-conditioned offices to the big delis on Jay and Front Streets for their salads, wraps and soy shakes. Their dark wayfarer sunglasses come out; the Parliament cigarettes are unsheathed, lit and quickly extinguished. And just like that, Dumbo’s creative workforce disappears back indoors, leaving the cobblestone streets desolate and lonely again.
But ultimately, it’s the sweeping vistas of the Manhattan Bridge spanning the East River, the truly remarkable and copious street-art (murals, Graffiti tags, sticker collages, portraiture, etc) visible on every little side road, and the glimpses of Old New York that make Dumbo a must-see location for anyone visiting NYC.
