Comic Books Wonder Woman: Don’t Eff With an Icon

July 2, 2010 - 7:01 pm

Wonder-Woman-New-By-Don-Kramer

I don’t have to tell you that this week DC Comics released the new look for Wonder Woman, by Don Kramer.  It’s not only the comic universe that is in an uproar, but pretty much everyone that ever had a fond memory or attachment to the heroine. After all she was one of the only superheros who didn’t have a male counterpart come first. I mean, really…there wasn’t much of a need for a Wonder Man.

Just recently I started watching the original 1974 TV series with the gorgeous Linda Carter filling WW’s red leather boots. With the risk of dating myself, I remember catching episodes as a little girl and being absolutely titillated by her glossy brown hair and overt sexuality. My Mother thought she was a bit scandalous, which made me all the more interested in paying very close attention. I think for a lot of girls, Wonder Woman was the first female we had access to as a role model.

Comic Books Film Are You There, Hollywood? It’s Me, Niki : Enough With the Remakes!

March 10, 2010 - 3:03 pm

Spider- Ham

Lately there’s been a trend growing amongst filmmakers to reboot, remake, or re-imagine certain ideas. Most noticeable of them all: you guessed it — the SPIDER-MAN franchise. Since 2002, we’ve only known Peter Parker as Tobey Maguire, Mary Jane as Kirsten Dunst, and Sam Raimi in charge of capturing the world they live in. As of mid-January, that all changed. Marc Webb, who helmed 500 DAYS OF SUMMER is now the new director of the teenaged Spidey reboot. Right now there are no other details, but it brought about a good question—why all the remakes?

Comic Books Event Neil Gaiman Reveals More Evidence That He’s a Genius

February 10, 2010 - 12:10 pm

Neil Gaiman has finally arrived in Hollywood. Not that he cares. But judging from the packed auditorium in UCLA’s hollowed Royce Hall, his rise to fame seems equally the result of cult status-turned-acclaim from even the most cold-hearted of critics, as well as the movie industry’s intermittent love affair with what many believe to be “the most accomplished storyteller in the English language today” (as his publicist introduced him).

After what might have seemed to hard-core fans as somewhat, er, inconsistent adaptations of his work for the silver screen, The Almighty Academy last week announced that the movie adaptation of Gaiman’s 2002 book Coraline had been nominated for Best Animated Picture. According to Gaiman, the process was a bit of a challenge when first presented to his literary agent: “Neil, I read the Coraline chapters and loved it! I think it’s the best thing you’ve ever written. But I have to warn you: it’s unpublishable.”

Comic Books Featured Gallery I’m Batman Damnit…

July 29, 2009 - 9:28 pm

Comic Com 09’ is a sea filled with bobbing pop-characters ranging from a black Scooby Doo to a white Darth Vader. A 4yr old “I Dream of Genie” to a 65yr old Wonder Woman. And we’re not just talking about your run of the mill store bought Halloween bullshit here either kiddos. While costume design can begin the gambit with a simple sponge paint Poke’mon t-shirt; it’s the 2 years in the making handmade cosplayer’s guise, which truly embodies a fan. Chris “Wayne”, we shall call him, just so happens to be one of those devotees.

I shot some 300 different pop-characters and saw easily over a couple thousand alt personas over the course of Comic Con 09’. But it was this variant of the caped crusader that stood out. I really wanted to know what it took to dress as Batman Beyond in time and character. Here’s what I found out.

Comic Books The New R. Black

July 25, 2009 - 10:01 pm

R. Black

Dark and sensuous, the art of R. Black has a look all its own. Immediately identifiable, the mix of futuristic vinyl with pulpy pinups entwine to create some of the most evocative poster work to date.   Collectors can recognize a piece instantly, while the uninitiated just know they’re staring at a particularly striking piece of print.

R. has a keen eye for the  avant-garde and his work shows that he has a mind and imagination made for creating provocative and intriguing  pieces of futuristic art. In awe of his work, I had to stop and ask him more about his method, mind and  motivation.

Toys at Comic Con

Many attend the San Diego Comic Con with an empty piece of luggage in tow.  These are the seasoned Comic-Coneers who have learned from their long years of attendance that they’ll be leaving with more than they came with.  There’s nothing like that thrill in finding that one rare item to take back home.  Okay, maybe it’s like how Indiana Jones might feel when he acquires an ancient idol.  So, in a way, all Comic Con shoppers are like Indy — searching for that prized item that they don’t need, but must have.

Preview night at Comic Con takes place Wednesday, when booths are still setting up, and certain exclusive items are first made available for purchase.  There are two schools of thought on getting the best deal.  One is to buy it early, to be sure you actually get what you want.  The second is to scout out the item you want and wait until Sunday to get a deal.  Sunday is when Comic Con ends and dealers are more likely to drop the price so they don’t have to lug it back.  Choosing a wise shopping strategy is the secret to getting your hands on one of these…

On the surface is would be easy to say: pack as though you’re preparing for the zombie apocalypse (but with more deodorant).  With hoards of fans all screeching and clawing to vie for that special issue or exclusive toy, the outbreak is SURE to start In San Diego.

However, there are a few minor differences between the biggest comic convention in the US and the impending undead apocalypse.

PACK MORE DEODORANT!

I can’t stress this seemingly inconsequential item.  Whatever amount you consider sufficient for a mere mortal, double it….triple it if you’ve got “heat powers.”  I’ve seen the best of men fall victim to the monster that is under-arm funk.  Think of it as your “Boomstick,” a double-barrel of armpit freshness that will aid you in your quest to get up-close and personal with the hottest of booth babes.
