Featured Gallery Music The Sounds: Dying for Something

April 5, 2011 - 11:10 am

At long last, international superstars The Sounds have a new album! Something To Die For was released on March 29 on SideOneDummy Records.

The Sounds made a splash at SXSW 2011, with a stellar performance at The PureVolume House, as pictured here. The Sounds’ live show is not to be missed. Often described as a New Wave, electro dance party, the band’s energy is rivaled by few. And it’s rare to see a sight such as singer Maja Ivarsson land a jumping split kick in 3 inch heels. Even Pete Townsend and David Lee Roth wear a low heel or flat shoe.

And on the eve of their album release, The Sounds signed autographs for over 1000 fans who showed up at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood for the album release party.

ChinaShopMag chatted with singer Maja Ivarsson while she was at the SideOneDummy headquarters in Hollywood on the heels of the band’s sold out show at the Avalon and completion of their Red Bull Studio session.

Gallery Music NOFX as told by Christine “Cece” Sherman

March 31, 2011 - 10:49 am

Long Beach resident Christine “Cece” Sherman has taken on a daunting task: to learn every song ever written by Californian punk rock legends NOFX and re-interpret them as folk songs on the acoustic guitar. NOFX’s lyrical depth and poignant satire take on a whole new life when stripped down to their basics. Grown men have been known to shed a tear when hearing the songs executed so delicately.

There’s Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Woody and Arlo Guthries, and now… Cece Sherman? Stranger things have happened.

Since debuting last fall, Cece, as she is called by friends, has already opened for such acts as Chuck Ragan, The Aggrolites, Exene Cervenka and The White Buffalo. And she made her first official tour to Austin to play alongside bands Cheap Girls, Continental, Joey Briggs, The Sparring and Death Punch at the Slidebar/Old Shoe Records/Iron Fist Clothing day party during SXSW 2011.

Between sets, Cece busked along 6th Street and that’s where we made this video of Eat The Meek.

Featured Film Foo Fighters Back and Forth Premiere at SXSW

March 21, 2011 - 10:14 am

Foo Fighters at the SXSW Premier

People can’t seem to stop talking about the Foo Fighters right now. Having been around for over 15 years, they still remain as relevant as ever. On Tuesday night at the closing of the SXSW Film Festival and Interactive activities in Austin the band premiered their latest endeavor, a documentary film called Foo Fighters Back and Forth.

After hearing about this project for the past 6 months I had some expectations. I knew the band was recording in Dave Grohl’s garage in his home on tape, with legendary producer Butch Vig at the helm. I knew that cameras where there for something like 3 months capturing the process. I also knew that they shot at least 5 hours of footage at the bands secret show at the Roxy Theatre last month. So my anticipation was that this film would focus on the latest and greatest antics and the making of a fresh but yet nostalgic process of writing a record.

March 18, 2011 - 11:18 am

The Power of the Riff festival debuted at the Echoplex in Los Angeles last summer. It was by far the loudest day of the summer! And the most fun festival to debut in Echo Park in years.

Today, The Power Of The Riff descends upon Austin, Texas with a FREE all ages day party at ND at 501 Studios with Trash Talk, The Secret, The Funeral Pyre, All Pigs Must Die, Trap Them, Masakari, and The Country Bucks.

Gallery Music Red Bull BPM Party feat. DJ Manny & Felix Da Housecat

March 16, 2011 - 4:04 pm

Let me preface this by saying I’ve never been to Austin before. I know, I know. Tragic, right? San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso and maybe a few other random destinations, but never Austin. But if everything is bigger in Texas and Austin is “weird,” then I felt comfortable in my assumption that everything would be big, weird, and maybe smell a bit like barbecue. Maybe some beer. Okay a lot of beer. And a ton of food trucks.

Gallery Music NOFX: Success Is A Drag

January 14, 2011 - 7:51 am

Legendary punks NOFX are known for pushing boundaries.

Their cutting edge documentary NOFX: Backstage Passport shocked TV viewers with their global escapades in debauchery on tour when it aired on Fuse in 2008. Earlier this year, singer Fat Mike’s alter ego Cokie The Clown got banned from Emo’s in Austin, Texas when he served what appeared to be urine-infused tequila to an audience of unsuspecting fans (it later proved to be an elaborate hoax). Now for the band’s latest exploit: NOFX dressed in full drag for their New Year’s Heave party at the Wiltern.
