At first I was hesitant to make the comparison between Matthew Dear and David Byrne, but I’ve been listening to his discography all morning and I’m gonna stand by my guns. Like at the end of “Psycho Killer,” when Byrne makes his “Ay ay ay ay ay” noise. Or the “Ahh ha ha ha” in “Girlfriend is Better.” Well, Dear makes noises like that, but trips them out with fancy electro-pop reverb while playing the guitar, all with a full band behind him. Furthermore, Dear’s music, like that of Talking Heads, is experimental and inaccessible enough to appeal only to a progressive crowd—a little pretentious, even—while exhibiting real creativity and talent. The pretentiousness, in the end, is well earned.

Fashion Housing Works 7th Annual Fashion for Action Event
“Where’s the Marc Jacobs?” a frantic fashionista yelled from across the room, while sockless Thom Browne groupies modeled button-ups and demanded, “Is purple my color?” People were indeed changing in the aisles, despite the available dressing rooms (sample sale habits die hard); at one point we tried to add a fellow shopper’s unattended coat to our pile of wares. Oops! Welcome to the Housing Works 7th annual Fashion for Action sample sale, which kicked off this past weekend in Housing Works’ Chelsea location with cute fashion kids, plenty of booze, and a store full of primo merchandise.
Fashion Featured Gallery Fashion’s Night Out ChinaShop Style
So there were about three million and a half events going on last Friday night in NYC, all in the holy name of Fashion’s Night Out. Some of those other parties may have been a decent time, but our very own ChinaShopPop party at Red Bull Space in Soho totally ruled!
Music Raver Chic At The Electric Zoo
If you thought raver style went out with the 90’s, you are wrong. It still exists and is going strong, as exhibited this weekend at New York’s Electric Zoo. There was a strong showing of the favorites– tons of neon, beaded bracelets and so, so much glitter. But it seems 2010’s ravers are taking it to the next level by mixing current trends with old electro staples.
Music Welcome To The Electric Zoo
There was music, there was food, there was art and revelry. All the makings for a fabulous music festival came together and delivered. With 4 different stages, each boasting their own lineup, Randalls Island park isnt as big as some of the other large festivals I’ve attended (Austin City Limits, cough, cough) so you could easily dart from one stage to another and catch all the acts. And speaking of the acts, wow, what a lineup.
Music Glitch Mob: Electronica 101
The Glitch Mob is a trio of dudes from Los Angeles who played Sunday at the Redbull Music Academy Stage. Admittedly, I don’t keep up with the electronic music scene as well as I should so I had no idea who these guys were. As I approached the stage I had no intention of staying, listening, dancing, interviewing or taking portraits but I ended up doing all five.
Music DJ Mehdi: So Damn Sweet
At his second appearance at New York’s Electric Zoo (he also played the 2009 festival), Mehdi’s status as veteran of the tables was so obvious that its easy to assume he came out of the womb spinning.
Mehdi’s music fuses the hip hop and electro genres. I’m not usually a booty dancer, but with Mehdi throwing tracks, one can’t help but bend over and grind a bit. Don’t get too comfortable though, ‘cause soon he’ll have the entire crowds eyes closed and arms raised, pulsating in a euphoric trance. If someone sat through a Mehdi show and didn’t enjoy themselves then they just don’t like life. This music just feels good. The tone of the music changes with Mehdi’s expressions; he is first serious, brows furrowed in concentration, then playful, bouncing and smiling from ear to ear. This is music at its best– a coming together of different styles and talents that when woven together with Mehdi’s precision and skill, ebb and flow seamlessly from end to end.
Music Electric Zoo: Party Animals Ready Set Go
So we here at ChinaShop don’t know what your plans are for this Labor Day weekend but if you don’t have any or even if you do, cancel them quick and head out to the Electric Zoo, New York’s electronic music festival out on Randall’s Island. There will be tons of music, interactive arts displays and plenty of eats to keep your dancin’ pants on all day.
Featured Gallery Music Free Hugs with Ed Sharpe and the M.Z.s
It’s been a while since I got to photograph a band that I am enamored of and I had forgotten how thrilling it could be. I don’t even know how to write this review– I just want to squeal.
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are a band consisting of 10-ish members (they seem to float in and out) led by the charismatic Alex Ebert. Their hugely successful song ‘Home,’ off their first and only album, has granted them the adoration of music fans everywhere, including the masses that swarmed a sold out Webster Hall on Thursday, July 22.

Bevin Branlandingham knows how to throw a party. She brings together a mix of Brooklyn’s finest: a slew of performers celebrating the essence of queer, a dash of DJ’s spinning beats and an attitude that makes everyone want to dance, hug and kiss all night long. Add a lil sugar and spice and out comes Rebel Cupcake– a monthly themed dance party and show for flamboyant queers of all shapes and flavors. Speaking of flavors, did you try the cupcakes?
