LISA JOHNSON

Lisa Johnson. Rock Photographer. These two names are rarely spoken apart. Johnson has been taking photos of true rock royalty since she could essentially hold a camera. She is out nearly 7 nights a week honing her craft. Everyone in the rock world knows and adores her. She’s kind of a big deal. Last month she took part in the first Art Walk in Fullerton by showing a collection of her fine art rock photographs. Catch her and her extensive amazing photos at the next Fullerton Art Walk, this coming November 5th.

ChinaShop is tickled pink to be able to welcome Lisa to our collection of contributors. Look for more of her fabulous photos and witty words to keep your rock cred legit.

Art/Design Its a MAD World: Dead Or Alive

October 8, 2010 - 10:34 am

Jennifer Trask Intrinsecus

The Museum of Art and Design (MAD) in NYC might not be your first stop. In a city so full of art and culture, museums and galleries galore, it might not even be your second stop. But I can honestly say, it should at least make the list. The current exhibit, Dead of Alive: Nature Becomes Art is captivating.  It’s a collection of work “from 30 international artists  who transform organic materials and objects that were once produced by or part of living organisms-insects, feathers, bones, silkworm cocoons, plant materials, and hair-to create intricately crafted and designed installations and sculptures”.  Whether you are a fan of organic materials or not it will win you over.

Art/Design Featured Gallery Take a Trip to the Dirtyland With Brian Viveros

October 7, 2010 - 11:54 am

Brian Viveros is a celebrated fetish artist, known mainly for his erotic paintings of smokey eyed pin-up girls with cigarettes dangling from their overly red lips. His recent show, The Dirtyland just opened this past weekend at Thinkspace Gallery . With images of strong women in situations of war and struggle, one would think the show might come off dark. On the contrary, it doesn’t position woman as victim, but fearless, seductive and entirely bad ass.

Music INNERPARTYSYSTEM Play the Music Box

September 23, 2010 - 11:39 am

InnerPartySystem Signs with Red Bull Records

INNERPARTYSYSTEM played the Henry Fonda Music Box in Hollywood Tuesday night  supporting Does It Offend You Yeah? and Kele. When I entered the packed room they were already in possession of the stage like they had always been there, making it there own. The sound enveloped the room like a lovers embrace. Drawing the eager crowd forward into the synchronized light show. Only this lover wasn’t looking you in the eye, cooing he loves you. This lover held you in a passionate embrace, timing his motions with yours, unapologetically romancing you into submission. This live show left you hot and bothered, somewhat satisfied but yet wanting more.

Good Art Hlywd Skull

Growing up a punk rock girl I was always on the look out for the ultimate rock n roll accoutrement. As a fully grown punk rock girl, it gets a little harder to find appropriate accessories that still say “I’m edgy but won’t shop at Hot Topic”. Enter Good Art Hlywd! Founder Josh Warner creates handcrafted American masterpieces in Los Angeles one fine design at a time.

This brand is authentic Americana to the core. Admired equally for the perfection of the Spanish Cross, the elegant hand-assembled chains and the venerable Model 10 Bracelet, this is communication on a visceral level. Every facet of the line is steeped in Warner’s spare-no-expense attitude of “do it right or not at all”.

Music INNERPARTYSYSTEM Signs to Red Bull Records

August 23, 2010 - 6:12 pm

Innerpartysystem_-_Apple_Store

American dance group, INNERPARTYSYSTEM just signed to Red Bull Records. The creative  trio consists of Patrick Nissley, Jared Piccone and Kris Barman and has been making music you have probably heard and loved since 2007. Known mostly for their endearing and energetic remixes of such songs as ‘Hot N Cold’ by Katy Perry, ‘Don’t Trust M’ by 3OH!3 and ‘Human’ by The Killers, they have the ability to get your body moving on the dance floor.

In the Summer of 2009, the band announced on their official MySpace and Facebook pages that they had parted ways with their label, Island Records. They wrote, “There are some really amazing, overworked, underpaid, stressed out people who love music, working very hard there… and there are a handful of people who just didn’t really understand this band, and didn’t know how to react when ‘Don’t Stop’ wasn’t ‘Just Dance.’ Our bad there.”

In May of 2010 they self-released the EP American Trash, which exhibited a fresh and polished sound that made the industry perk up their ears. Their music is like a well blended cocktail of straight razors, motor oil, premium vodka and chewing gum. Its accessible, eclectic,  thumping, melodic masterpieces. Just last week they announced they signed to the ever growing roster on Red Bull Records out of Santa Monica, CA.

Have a listen and tell me what you think about their latest acquisition?

I think a lot of people have memories of camp as a kid. Long hot days, mosquitoes, friendship bracelets and camp fire smores.  Now imagine for a minute that you are a kid into DJ culture! You love music and you spend pretty much all day listening to songs wishing you had an outlet for your creativity. Well DJ Tina T decided that both of these experiences needed a home, and thus Camp Spin-Off was born.
