Fashion Featured Gallery Pushing the Envelope: Unstitched Utilities

February 16, 2011 - 8:09 am

3 of the nicest men you’d ever want to share a beer with, (insert your favorite uncle image here) got sick of the machinery of corporate fashion. Having all worked together at one point in their illustrious careers or other, Jack Steinweis, Mark Kane and Kevin Crowley finally decided to put up or shut up and Unstitched Utilities was found. Hailing from New Jersey, Baltimore and New Hampshire, the men connected to hatch a vision that their individual talents, know how and charisma might be the building blocks to launching a truly environmentally thoughtful brand.

Step one, find a truly remarkable, environmentally friendly, durable material for manufacturing footwear.

Fashion Don’t Be 2000 and Late: Taboo Deltah 3008

February 16, 2011 - 8:05 am

While mindlessly glancing around the Burbank airport, waiting to board a flight to Las Vegas for the Fashion industry trade show, MAGIC, something shiny caught my eye. Super slick, hot pink, patent leather sneakers graced the feet of a rather unusually understated Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas.  I noticed the shoes first, the superstar second.

Featured Music Foo Fighters Secret Shows

February 8, 2011 - 1:43 pm

Foo Fighters White Limo 2011

Sometimes I absolutely love Los Angeles. Where else can you catch a band as big as the Foo Fighters playing a legendary theater such as the Roxy on a Monday night? Lately if you are in the “know” and following the Foo tweets you can find yourself at one of their secret shows. Let me put this into some kind of perspective for you kids out there who maybe don’t get how big this is (that’s right my nephews…I’m glaring at you).

Event Saturday Nights All Right for Spite-ing: Ralph Garman & Kevin Smith Babble On

January 28, 2011 - 1:09 pm

Ralph and Kevin

The weekend is upon us! While perusing the interweb for an excuse to imbibe alcoholic spirits while having a laugh directly before I black out…I discovered Hollywood Babble On. Every Saturday night at Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal City Walk, funny men, Ralph Garman (of Sharktopus and KROQ fame) and Kevin Smith (Writer/Director) get together, tie one on, and attempt to let us into their private jokes and twisted humor.

Video Bruno Mars: Just the Way You Are

January 13, 2011 - 2:46 pm

Despite the fact that popular radio has this song on once an hour, I like it. It’s a sweet little feel good ditty that sticks. And the video is equally precious with its unassuming young love in bloom. However, I find it incredibly hard to imagine that the generation listening to Bruno Mars gets the cassette tape reference. Where did they even find a cassette tape player…the Smithsonian?

Regardless, people of a certain age will be won over by this nod to times when your music spun round and round on little wheels of tape. Enjoy!

Music Street Drum Corps Tonight at the Roxy: Can’t Beat That!

November 30, 2010 - 5:14 pm

If you missed the Street Drum Corps last week, or even the week before that, you have an awesome opportunity to catch them tonight at the Roxy in Hollywood. They are doing a month long residency and this is almost the last chance..almost..next Tuesday night will be there fond farewell. But shoot…don’t delay! They are just as incredible as you might think they are. Just ask Sam from the Suicide Girls and she’ll tell you all about ‘em.

Music A-Muse Me!

November 5, 2010 - 10:51 am

Muse at Voodoo Experience

I don’t like Muse. I mean, I don’t dislike them either. I just don’t particularly find that their music speaks to me. So when I saw them live at Voodoo Experience I sort of went into it with next to no expectations. Being the headliner there must be added pressure to end things on a high note, so to speak. And I have heard time and again that their live show is down right legendary. Well shut my mouth and paint me a unicorn…the tales were true.

Featured Music How Metric Measures Up: Voodoo Style

November 4, 2010 - 11:38 am

Metric

Emily Haines is a rock star. The Canadian lead singer of Metric owned the stage at the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans this past weekend. Her dynamic vocals, delivered perfectly made me embarrassed for those auto-tuning wannabees. Its refreshing to see an age of strong woman rockers emerging after such a miserable lull.

Gallery Music INNERPARTYSYSTEM Casts Its Spell

November 1, 2010 - 7:15 pm

The Voodoo Experience had many rocking moments this past weekend. One to note was the afternoon set from innerpartysystem on the Le Plur stage. Sure the sun was high and bright in the sky, not your normal ambiance for electronic thumping. Yet the club crowd showed up in full force, heads bouncing, singing along.

Innerpartysystem @ Voodoo Experience 2010

No one could escape being called American Trash for at least a good 4 minutes. But the zealous fans kept calm and carried on. IPS had a little technical difficulty mid-set…but that was more the stages fault than the bands (I witnessed at least 4 other bands throughout the day having such issues). Despite the glitch, the band came back strong. Lead singer, Patrick Nissley, looks unassuming but I have to say, impressive,  as he belted out his lyrics like “I am the life that you adore, I feed the rich and f!@k the poor”.

Music Debauche: Expect Nothing Less New Orleans

October 30, 2010 - 3:43 pm

Debauche Voodoo Fest 2010

When you are one of the first bands to play a 3 day festival, like Voodoo Fest in New Orleans, you have to have something unique to win thin crowd over to your stage. Luckily for the Russian Band, Debauche, who launched the Bingo! stage @ 10:45 am Friday, they thought ahead and brought a few burlesque girls to entertain. The atmosphere was appropriately very French Quarter meets Comrades meets the bright light of day.
