Art Portrait Of A Painter: Matt Doust

December 14, 2011 - 10:50 am

We have come to spare ourselves too much of life’s natural awkwardness. When is the last time you sat a few seconds longer inside an awkward moment, especially one shared with a stranger? You should try it. It’s fascinating! There is such vulnerability in a way of being which is totally unrehearsed. To witness something like that—in oneself or another—is precious.

Painter Matt Doust is brilliant when it comes to being able to capture a moment in time of someone’s soul like this. For that period during which his model is being painted, he/she belongs to Doust. Even his portrayal of a subject’s collarbone is exquisite; there is a reverence in it. The reverence (on the part of Doust toward his subjects) is borne of an attempt to mirror rather than to perfect. He seeks not to mold his subject, but rather to recreate him/her.

Art Artist Profile: Painter Robert Vargas

December 13, 2011 - 10:30 am

A deluge of color and sound flooded the streets of downtown L.A. Thursday night. The last Downtown Art Walk of 2011 turned an otherwise mundane Thursday into a district-wide spectacle in the name of art. Cold crowds spilled over curbs and into any open door; faceless people folded inside of scarves and beanies, their fingers pointing here and there like cactus thorns. It was a night to be seen, something to be witnessed.

Art L.A. Art Walk more than Just Talk

December 12, 2011 - 1:26 pm

Thursday, December 8, the streets of downtown L.A. spilled over themselves. The last Downtown L.A. Art Walk of the year drew impressive crowds. It was so packed that strangers had to walk side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder. The sidewalks were covered with Hipsters sporting saddle shoes and high-water skinny jeans; “street kids” who followed around the successful artists borne of their own neighborhood; tourists seeking to witness “Los Angeles”; haughty, struggling artists donning the appropriate, unimpressed gazes; wealthy art patrons rubbing elbows with the burgeoning community; random onlookers who had no idea of the event at all; aspiring artists looking for encouragement from mentors. For the evening, the artistic hub of Los Angeles—Gallery Row—would become a living breathing stage for a sort of unintentional performance art.

For now, a few highlights from the “actual art” on display…

Fashion #Trending: Faux Gold Watches, Spandex Business Suits and Super High Converse

December 12, 2011 - 10:47 am

Usually the fragrance of Tom Ford Black Orchid or red bottom Christian Louboutins scream sex to me, but lately these big fools gold Michael Kors watches have been catching my eye. Even though they are gold toned, for everyone cant afford a 18kt gold Rolex Yachtmaster, they are still classy, sexy and very tasteful. Probably one of the sexiest accessories on a woman outside of false eyelashes and helium inflated tits, yes I’m superficial, Is a nice big, bold, gold watch. If you are a woman and you are too boojee to be seen with a Guess watch on wrist, but don’t want to drop 6 grand on a Tiffanys Atlas, get yourself a Michael Kors. It will definitely give you that opulent, sultry look that you are looking for if you are a member of the “broke and still posh” club.

Featured Music Laura Gibson: Lush Life on the Oregon Trail

December 9, 2011 - 5:40 am

As I write this, the outside thermometer reads a crisp 41 degrees. The fire in the living room is roaring while the dog maintains safe distance for optimal warming. The bourbon is marinating on the side table. The laptop hums with intention. Native Oregonian Laura Gibson’s latest long player, La Grande, coasts through the speakers. Marimba, pump organ, woodwinds and vibraphones create a pastoral menagerie of sound, as traces of folk music, soul, jazz and jangling, confident rock ‘n’ roll dip in and out of the foreground. Her voice has a vintage quality to it; a delicate lilt that makes each song sound like a lullaby, even when the tempos kick up a notch. The music is medicinal, and it’s going down smooth.

The trailer in the lead photo above is a 1962 Shasta, originally built to provide housing for members of the US Armed Forces when the company was founded back in 1941. This one belongs to Gibson. She’s transformed it into a makeshift writing space. While the majority of the record was recorded in a proper studio with temp control and soundproofing, the Shasta personifies the independent, roughshod romance that lies at the core of her songs. The follow-up to 2009’s Beasts Of Seasons, La Grande is the first great album of 2012—sample a smidge by downloading the title track here—and with indie darling label Barsuk behind it, it’s sure to get spins in high profile areas. We caught up with her for a pre-holiday chat. Gibson will also be touring across the country in January and February, so make sure to scroll to the bottom for dates.
