Music Talib Kweli’s Top 5 Reinvented Artists

November 8, 2011 - 11:08 am

Talib Kweli broke ground as a top-tier, razor-sharp, socially-minded lyricist as a member of Reflection Eternal with Hi-Tek and in Black Star with Mos Def. The Brooklyn rapper’s solo material has been equally charged, from the inspirational “Get By” to the tribute to his lady on “Hot Thing.”

Kweli continues his remarkable creative evolution with “Habits Of The Heart,” the debut album from Idle Warship, his group with singer Res. The sonically and thematically diverse collection allows both Kweli and Res to explore new components of their artistry. With Idle Warship in full swing, Talib sat down to give us an exclusive look at his Top 5 Artists’ Reinventions, something he knows plenty about.

Gallery Music Sexpop Dance Party Reptar Style

November 8, 2011 - 10:12 am

Hailing from the Dirty South, aka Hotlanta, Reptar’s Ryan Engelberger, William Kennedy, Andrew McFarland, and Graham Ulicny share one unanimous goal: To create dance inducing music. “We always have epic dance parties at our shows. It’s what we do,” says lead vocalist/guitarist Ulicny. Since coming onto the music scene in 2008, Reptar has caught the attention of music fans 1) For sharing the same name as the giant green dinosaur on the popular 90’s Nickelodeon show Rugrats and 2) Their playful electro-pop sound which fuses together indie rock, punk, soul, and afrobeat influences.

Ulicny and the boys came through LA to open two sold out shows with Foster The People and Cults at The Wiltern Theatre this past week. Prior to their set, Ulicny gave us the rundown on the band’s unique sound. We also discussed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, his mother making his Halloween costume, and the celebration that occurred when the band’s touring van hit 300,000 miles.

Film The Glow Vs. Fist Of Fury – Bruce Leroy And Bruce Lee Battle For Hollywood Shaolin Supremacy

November 7, 2011 - 2:56 pm

In the 80’s And 90’s Tinseltown was overly saturated with a bunch of corny ass karate movies. Chinese martial arts was being exploited like a F list actress on a Hollywood “casting couch.” You had “American Ninja,” “Three Little Ninjas” and “Gymkata” just to name a few. OK, I have to admit that I own two copies of “Gymkata” On DVD, don’t ask me how the plots were all the same. Spoiled suburban white kid from Mulberry somehow gets enrolled in the three day accelerated Shaolin Master Kung Fu Program, they champion The Snake, The Dragon, The Crane, The Panther, and The Tiger which is administered by the old Asian sensei who is for some reason on his death bed and can only garner enough strength to teach the young disciple these moves that took the master years to master. These newly initiated Kung Fu Masters now travel to uncharted and hazardous lands that even the most proficient shaolin monk of old couldn’t navigate. They annihilate all obstacles in their path and in the grand finale they crush the head nemesis that is a fingernail away from destroying the planet and for some odd reason the ancient monks couldn’t accomplish this feat so they had to enlist the one who knows the “ancient way of the tiger” from Mulberry because the prophecy said so.

Film Fall of Night: Film Short Review

November 7, 2011 - 2:41 pm

Fall of Night is a story of four roommates who have lived together for fifteen years, and one of those roommates is M. Night Shyamalan.

This charming short is either a letter of scorn for the critically slain M. Night Shyamalan, or an open plea for him to get back to the essentials that made him. Writers, Steven Haas and Ross Raventos have captured the essence of what it might be like to be regular people sharing a home with an eccentric like M. Night.

Film Fridays The Top 5 Nerdiest Halloween Costumes, Plus a Bunch of Cool Dark Crystal/Labyrinth Concept Art

November 4, 2011 - 10:35 pm

‘Tis no easy task, choosing the geekiest costumes from this past All Hallows’ Eve — especially since all things nerd are now mainstream, pseudo-trendy and thus downright unavoidable (excluding England circa 1979, who thought Doctor Who costumes would be popular?). Ed. Note: We did our best to eschew superhero outfits, video game characters and human Tetris blocks as they seem to have become more prevalent over the years.

5. The Google Maps Orange Guy: These two guys loved the Google Orange Guy so much, they decided to put together a costume, from what looks like stuff you could get at your local Rite Aid. The costume itself isn’t that interesting, but the video detailing its conception is pretty cool.
