Film Fridays Cinema’s 5 Most Criminally Underrated Villains (Male)

November 11, 2011 - 11:21 pm

5. Ike Clanton – Tombstone: The least ruthless of this top villains list, Stephen Lang’s portrayal of Clanton also remains the most criminally overlooked. A slobbering, raging drunk, Clanton was a lot of bark and no real bite. Despite him being a rather meek criminal at heart, he was still a bastard, and a killer, and Lang should really have been nominated for an Oscar on this one. He’s so good he even steals scenes from Val Kilmer’s Doc Holliday. Go to 1:35 for Ike; he’s the beet-faced guy in blue.

Best Scene: “See? A little rap on the beak get you some respect around here.”

Ronnie Radke has some very loyal fans. The former Escape The Fate frontman told KROQ DJs during this week’s Red Bull Sound Space performance that he was shocked that his fans waited patiently while he finished out a 2 ½ year prison sentence. While landing some time in the slammer isn’t exactly a preferred stop along the path of life, Ronnie made the best of it. As he finished up his sentence, he received hoards of letters from his many admirers, which prompted him to seriously reflect upon his life, past addictions, and goals for the future. Thoughts became lyrics and lyrics turned into songs and ultimately material for Ronnie’s novel musical endeavor, Falling in Reverse.

Fashion Featured Where Sugar Meets Art

November 11, 2011 - 10:52 am

Since I’m infatuated with Timmery Turner every way sexually, mentally, etc. Allow me to first profess my lust for her since I refuse to send her a letter filled with naughty nothings VIA Facebook. “I’m sure that she gets a lot of that.” She embodies everything that I would want to take home to my mother. She’s aggressive, determined, hot, fascinating I could go on and on, but I won’t because this is not a racy novel that you purchase in the check out line at Walmart. She states herself that “If there’s one thing in life that trumps my obsession for stilettos, its my obsession for good looking men.” Well, since I was grafted by God personally in heaven 29 years ago where only ridiculously beautiful men are born, I’d like to think I have a chance with Timmery.

Gallery Music The Past, Present and Odd Future of Rap

November 10, 2011 - 10:27 am

I was not in on the ground floor with Odd Future, just like I was late to Bloc Party (2003), missed The Crying Game (1993), and was the last one in my 2nd grade class to hear about the opening of Disneyland Tokyo (1983). Given my somewhat systematic addiction for being on the bleeding edge of “what’s now,” being put in this position usually emits a reaction I call “passive hateration.” Not to be confused with proper hating—which is an active dismissal of whatever person, place or thing that happen to be on-trend—passive hateration is more of a laissez faire approach. I don’t actively hate. I just revel in the not-knowingness of it all, letting the wave of enthusiasm pass by like a surfer training his watchful eye on the Next Big Thing. I don’t surf, either.

Music Breath In Breath Out: YACHT

November 9, 2011 - 11:19 am

Prior to YACHT’s sold out headlining set at Filter’s Culture Collide Festival, Jona Bechtolt walked to the front of the stage and instructed the audience to “Take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth” over and over until he was satisfied with everyone’s participation. This moment of Zen was a necessary measure for this particular crowd, seeing as the band’s set was pushed back 45 minutes, leaving the audience antsy, impatient, and wound up. When the music started, all staying-up-later-than-planned woes were quickly forgotten and The Echoplex lost itself in the high energy, danceable electropop tunes bursting from the stage.

ChinaShop sat down with YACHT’s Claire Evans and Jona Bechtolt before they took the stage to discuss the mysterious reform school the band was named after, Claire attempting to mask her love for Jonathan Taylor Thomas with a poster of an ocelot, and YouTube channels devoted entirely to flushing toilets.

Featured Gallery Music Into the Lab, The dublab

November 9, 2011 - 11:18 am

dublab is the NPR of DJ’s. This non-profit Los Angeles based internet radio collective has transcended your typical playlist of listening pleasure by fostering 12 years of growth in positive music, culture and modern art channeled through a roster of talented and eclectic music maestros.

Those skills shined brightly at their recent anniversary party up at the Atwater Crossing & Innovation Complex. It was a fair-ish event with food trucks, the requisite photo booth live-screen painting by local shirt shop Hit+Run, and a bike valet. Local dublab DJ’s spun to the outdoor crowd while names like Take aka Sweatson Klank, Julia Holter, Gaslamp Killer, & Daedelus kept the hipster crowd’s moccasin covered toes a tapping.. A mini-film fest and a #hellofanidea popcorn booth tied for second on the billing. Kutmah was to be beamed in live from the NTS Radio Studio in London but somebody forgot to set their alarm.
